Maryland Awards 10 US Online Sportsbook Betting Licenses

On Wednesday earlier this month, the Maryland Sports Wagering Application Reviews Commission (SWARC) awarded 10 online sportsbooks a license to bet on sports in the state. Maryland’s SWARC did not release a specific date to go live but the groundwork will be set for the near future.

The list of the legal US online sportsbooks are:

Each one of these US sportsbooks will go through a “controlled demonstration with the Maryland Lotter” as part of the process for going live. The process will take a few days and it ensures that the offline operation will be set in light for the actual online launch date.

Maryland’s Online Sportsbooks Launch Date

The anticipation of the launch date is a widely spectated event but the SWARC and Maryland Lottery have yet to officially declare a set a time.

The Caesars Sportsbook app ran a banner on Nov. 23 being the date of going live but it quickly removed it the ad. The Maryland Lottery had a press release that predated Thanksgiving as going live. However, a certified timeline as not been set.

The top US sportsbooks are counting down the official launch date but all 10 operators will not be in syne with their platforms on Day 1. Fanatics has already decided its going to open in early 2023.

SWARC Application Process

The Maryland Lottery shared that SWARC received 21 US sportsbooks applications during the first process and 10 were awarded approval. The next 11 sports betting operators will have to gain approval on Dec. 14 of this year at the monthly meeting. At that point, this would pave the way for more licensed US sportsbooks to enter the state.

Whether the legal US online sportsbooks are open for business Day 1 or sometime in the immediate future, Maryland will be a popular destination for sports betting.

The NFL has the Baltimore Ravens and the Washington Commanders. The Washington Wizards in the NBA and the Washington Capitals in the NHL will attract Maryland sports bettors as will the Washington Nationals in MLB.

FanDuel is the top US online sportsbook in the nation according to market share. The company now offers $100 in free bets for new Maryland sports bettors. Caesars Sportsbook and PointsBet also offers $100 in free sports bets to new customers in the state.

All the US online sportsbooks licensed in Maryland will be active in the state and join the legal retail sports bets venues in the marketplace.
