Hot and Cold NHL Betting Teams: Moneyline and ATS 1/18/2024
It is time for another look at who is performing well ATS and who is climbing the league standings. Vancouver and Winnipeg are leading the league, tied at 62 points on the year, while Boston sits atop the Eastern Conference with 61 points. In the Eastern Conference, there are currently four teams who are just a win away from claiming one of the wild card spots in what is shaping up to be a very exciting race down the stretch. Who has been making moves in the division standings over the last two weeks and who has been making you the most money? Let’s find out:
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
ATS
Hot
Montreal Canadiens 7-3
The last 10 have been tough for Montreal, but they have fared pretty well. Covering in seven of their last 10 games, Montreal has managed 10 points in a stretch that included trips to Florida, Tampa Bay, Dallas, Philadelphia, and New Jersey. Eight of the Canadiens’ last 10 games have been one goal games. They have done well ATS all season as they have kept games close, going 28-16 ATS this season, which ranks third in the NHL.
Pittsburgh Penguins 7-3
The Pens may have finally woken up and climbed the Eastern Conference standings as a result. They have gone 6-2-2 overall in their last 10 and have covered in seven of those contests. The offense has been on fire lately, as they have averaged 3.6 GF/G which is well above their season average of 3.02. Jake Guentzel and Sidney Crosby lead the team with 46 points, with Evgeni Malkin and Erik Karlsson both over 30 points as well. Pittsburgh has a tough stretch out of the break, so they need to stay hot over their next four games. Overall, Pittsburgh is 21-21 ATS.
St. Louis Blues 7-3
The Blues have also done well lately and have not only covered in seven of their last 10, but they have also picked up some key wins against Dallas, New York (Rangers), Vancouver, and Carolina. They also took Boston to overtime. Each of their last 10 contests have been against playoff teams, but it gets much easier for the Blues before the All-Star break. It will be a key collection of seven games for St. Louis as they sit four points out of the second wild card and need to choose to buy or punt to next season. I expect the Blues to keep this hot streak going though as the opposition gets a lot easier next week.
Edmonton Oilers 7-3
Surprised to see them on the list? More on them later.
Cold
Minnesota Wild 2-8
The Wild got hot after the coaching change, but things have simmered. The Wild have managed just five points in their last 10 games. Minnesota is coming off a big 5-0 victory over the Isles. However, if you take that game away, they went 1-7-1 and have a goal differential of -2.56. Minnesota has struggled tremendously on offense, as they have averaged just 2 GF/G over their last 10. It has been an ugly season for the Wild, and a lot of that lays on the shoulders of Filip Gustavsson, who has seemingly disappeared after getting a nice extension in the offseason. Overall, Minnesota is 21-22 ATS this season.
Ottawa Senators 2-8
Another team that has severely underperformed this season is the Ottawa Senators. Their goaltending has been awful all year and has been the culprit for another skid. Between Joonas Korpisalo and Anton Forsberg, the Senators have allowed 42 goals in their last 10 games. The offense has been fine, but you can’t expect to get covers when your netminders are allowing over four goals a game. Overall, Ottawa is 16-23 ATS this season and find themselves in the basement of the Eastern Conference.
Moneyline
Hot
Edmonton Oilers 10-0
There has been no hotter team in the NHL than the Edmonton Oilers. Edmonton hasn’t lost since December 19 and has lost only three times since November 24. The resurgence of Stuart Skinner and the revival of the offense has transformed this Oilers team into one of the best in the NHL. The offense has averaged 3.8 GF/G in their last 10 contests, while they have allowed just 1.6 GA/G. Their average margin of victory for the last month has been +2.2 goals. The Oilers have control of the 1st wild card and are only two points away from taking the last guaranteed spot from the Kings.
Winnipeg Jets 9-1
It’s too bad we couldn’t have the Oilers and Jets play a seven-game series right now. The Jets are another team that have dominated the opposition over the last six weeks. Winnipeg has tallied points in 19 of their last 21 games. The offense has been well above average, Winnipeg ranks in the Top 10 in GF/G, but the real X-Factor has been Connor Hellebuyck. The Vezina Trophy favorite has been absolutely dominant and has allowed only 11 goals in seven starts during this stretch. This is the most complete team in hockey, and they haven’t had one of their best skaters in over a month.
Cold
Los Angeles Kings 1-9
Los Angeles could not have picked a worse time to get cold. The Oilers have stormed back to relevancy and are right on the heels of the Kings. The offense has been nonexistent during this 10-game stretch as the Kings have averaged a mere 2.3 GF/G, which is well below their 3.27 season average. This is a tough team, and Cam Talbot has been solid guarding the net this season, but they need the offense to get going. Perhaps the Kings add a skater or two at the deadline as depth is an issue for this club. The first line is responsible for nearly 40% of the offensive production for this club. They need depth and it is showing.
San Jose Sharks 1-9
No surprise to see this club getting cold again. The Sharks have been the worst club the in NHL all year and have yet to break 90 goals on the season. Not only have they tallied the least number of goals, but they have also allowed the most in the NHL. They have notched only three points since December 15 and have been shut out three times since then. Time to sell, I hear the Kings need some help upfront.
