NHL Totals Betting Advice: Hot and Cold Over and Under Teams

As teams approach the 15-game mark of the season, it is time to analyze which teams around the league are posting high scoring games, and who is posting low scoring games. The Anaheim Ducks are leading the league in scoring as they are averaging 3.92 GF/G, while the Washington Capitals are leading the league in goals against, allowing just 2.33 GA/G. However, neither team is one of the Top Three lists of most Overs and Unders. As we look to fill our pockets before the holidays, let’s take a look at the teams who have been making money in regard to the game total.
Doc’s Sports offers NHL expert picks for every game on our hockey predictions page.
Over
Toronto Maple Leafs 9-1
Coming in atop the list of most Overs are the Toronto Maple Leafs. They have hit the over in nine of their last 10 games. Over their last five games, the Leafs are 4-1 and, combined with their opponent, their games have totaled at least seven goals in all five. This is no surprise when you look at the league scoring rankings and find that Toronto is ranked third in the league, averaging 3.62 GF/G. While a top of the league scoring team would make sense atop the Overs leaderboard, their lack of goaltending also contributes to the high scoring games. Toronto ranks 28th in the league in GA/G, as opponents are tallying 3.62 GA/G. In total, the Maple Leafs games have averaged over seven goals per game, a good recipe if you like to bet on the over. Look for Toronto to be a solid Overs bet for the remainder of the season, even when their goaltending inevitably improves. There is still a lot of offensive prowess on this roster.
Ottawa Senators 8-2
Similarly to Toronto, the Ottawa Senators have been seeing a lot of high scoring games. They had three games in a row where one of the teams scored seven goals, and over the last five games the Senators games have averaged 7.4 goals per game. Ottawa is 3-1-1 over that span, but they are just fifth in the Atlantic Division. Ottawa ranks seventh in the league in scoring as they are averaging 3.54 GF/G. Their 27.1% PP% ranks seventh in the league as they have cashed in on 13 power play chances thus far. Goal scorers are of plenty for Ottawa as Drake Batherson, Tim Stutzle, Shane Pinto, and Dylan Cozens have all tallied five or more goals so far this season. Now their goaltending has been awful. They have allowed 3.92 GA/G which is the third most in the league. Linus Ullmark has struggled so far this season, allowing 3.41 GA/G and recording a lowly .861 SV%. Offense plus poor goaltending equals a lot of high scoring games. Keep backing the Senators until Ullmark improves, if he does.
Montreal Canadiens 7-2-1
The Canadiens have been a pleasant surprise to start the season. They have started the season 9-3-1 and have won five of their last seven contests. Over their last five games, the game total has averaged over eight goals per game. One of the biggest reasons for this is the Nick Suzuki and Cole Caufield duo. The two have combined for 35 points already this season and Caulfield has been one of the best goal scorers so far this season, as he has already tallied 10. The Canadiens are second in the league in scoring, averaging 3.69 GF/G, and they are sixth in the league with a 30.8% PP%. Like the other teams on this list, their goaltending is far from strong. They rank 18th in the league in goals against, with a 3.08 GA/G mark. Sam Montembeault is the reason for the struggles in the crease. He has allowed 3.67 GA/G and has posted a .855 SV%. Jakub Dobes on the other hand has allowed just 1.97 GA/G in his six starts. If Montembeault is in the crease, take the Over.
Under
Tampa Bay Lightning 2-8
On the other side of things, the Tampa Bay Lightning are atop the league rankings for Unders. Tampa Bay has scored just 37 goals in total this season which ranks seventh in the Atlantic Division, ahead of just the Florida Panthers. One of the concerns for Tampa Bay this season was their aging roster. So far, the offense has shown signs of struggle. They are averaging just 2.85 GF/G, and they have been virtually nonexistent on the man advantage this season, scoring on just 13.6% of their power play chances. On the other hand, Andrei Vasilevskiy and Jonas Johansson have been a dominant duo, allowing just 2.77 GA/G. With the star-studded roster that Tampa Bay has, one can bet on an offensive revival, but for now, they are a solid low-scoring bet.
Dallas Stars 3-7
After scoring five goals in each of their first three games to start the season, Dallas has failed to reach that game milestone and has only reached four goals just one time over their last 10 games. Mikko Rantanen and Wyatt Johnston have combined for 14 goals already, but Jason Robertson has just three, Roope Hintz has just one, and Matt Duchene has just one. The offensive depth was a concern for Dallas heading into the season, and it has already reared its ugly head early on for the Stars. One of the few positives for Dallas is that Jake Oettinger once again looks like one of the best goalies in the NHL. He is allowing just 2.54 GA/G and has a .913 SV%.
Chicago Blackhawks 3-7
No one expected the Chicago Blackhawks to be lighting up the scoreboard this season, but their unexpected goaltending performance has them shutting down the opposition. The Blackhawks come in third on this list thanks to the performances of Spencer Knight. He has allowed just 2.63 GA/G this season and has a .913 SV%. Chicago’s 2.85 GA/G ranks right outside the Top 10 in the league, at 12th. Aside from Connor Bedard, the offense hasn’t been exciting. Chicago is averaging just 3.0 GF/G, and aside from their goal scoring quartet of Bedard, Frank Nazar, Andre Burakovsky, and Ryan Donato, this roster lacks offensive potential. As long as Knight can show the rest of the league that he is here to stay, then expect Chicago to be one of the best teams to back in terms of the Under.
