What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

5-Unit Play Take LA Clippers Moneyline -115 over Charlotte (1 p.m. EST, Saturday November 22)
The Clippers may be the death of us this season as we have backed them quite a bit and they keep failing, but the value keeps getting better and we just don’t see how they lose this one. It’s very early in the season but this almost seems like a must win game. The Clippers have a winning streak against the Hornets that stretches back years. The Hornets have been just as bad as the Clippers (identical records) but they have played a much easier Eastern Conference schedule. We think LA circles the wagons here today and scores a massive win.

2-Unit Play. Take #554 Milwaukee (+9) over Detroit (8 p.m., Saturday, November 22)

The Pistons are on a roll having won four in a row and nine of their last twelve. They are a legit contender in the East and with the makeup of their team they are going to be around deep into the playoffs. The Bucks have been up and down all year and no Giannis doesn't help anyone so they will be in some trouble with Detroit in town tonight. This line is too high as Milwaukee has capable scorers all over the floor and should be able to keep it close at home. Bucks plus the number in this one.

4-Unit Play. Take #555 Memphis (+1.5) @ Dallas (8:40 p.m., Sat, Nov. 22)

I am well aware that Memphis has not won B2B games this season but they have a huge scheduling edge here! They are off an easy blowout win over Sacramento Thursday so they really coasted to the win and had a day off yesterday to rest. Dallas, on the other hand, is off of a very tight win last night, and the Mavericks saw 3 important players all play big minutes. Flagg and Washington and Christie were the big point scorers last night and all played at least 32 minutes. Huge edge for Memphis here schedule-wise and remember the Grizzlies already dominated the Mavericks in the prior meeting this season. More of the same here. 4* MEMPHIS +1.5

4-Unit Play. #549. Take Atlanta Hawks -8.5 over New Orleans Pelicans (Saturday @ 7:10pm est)

Great 13-5 Run the NBA and of course a great 13-4 start to the College Basketball Season which is insane and of course 7*NCAAF Selection @ 3:30pm est. Per this game, we like Atlanta here coming off back to back losses. This is going to be a strong motivation as they come in today, remember, especially with Trae Young out the Hawks continue to share the ball and play quite well as their last two losses were against the Pistons and Spurs. Note, that the Hawks gave up 135 points in their last game and will be motivated as this is the season high in points allowed and the Pelicans have covered 3 in a row and we think they are due for a big let down here and we love the Hawks to do well and bounce-back.

7-Unit Play: #552 Chicago -12.5-110 over Washington (Saturday, November 22, 2025, 8:10pm ET)

Take Chicago ATS as my top NBA pick for Saturday night. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and I really like Chicago at home in this bounce back spot. Both of these teams played last night and both teams got blown out however Washington is simply a bad team while Chicago is not. That was a tough spot for Chicago after a four-game road trip returning home to play Miami. Chicago did win their last two road games at Denver and at Portland two very impressive victories. Now they are at home for their second game in a row against a bad Washington team. Chicago will definitely show up here tonight especially after being embarrassed at home by Miami last night. Coby White is set to make his home debut for Chicago and I do expect a big game from him here tonight. Washington has averaged just 112.5 points per game overall a season. Chicago has shot 47.6% as a team overall this season including 38.5% from beyond the arc averaging 120.7 points per game and this is a Washington team that has allowed 129.7 points per game overall this season with opponents shooting 48.5% against them. Play Chicago ATS as we move to 15-7 with my last 22 NBA plays.

After losing by 41-points to Memphis two nights ago, I expect Sacramento to bring a little focus and motivation tonight. 3-Unit Play - (550) New Orleans Pelicans +9 -110 over Atlanta Hawks (11/22 | 7:00PM EST) The Pelicans have been awful this season with a record of 2-14 SU. However, they have covered three-straight and we see no reason why the Hawks should be laying almost double-digits on the road. They looked awful on the defensive end in their two straight losses vs. Detroit and San Antonio, and until they prove they are back on track in that regard, we have to take the home dogs who are covering numbers.

The revenge factor won't be in play here for the Knicks. If this was in NY I may be able to lay a few points with the Knicks, but with this game being in Orlando the value lies squarely on the home team. New York is 0-5 ATS on the road this season and is playing their third straight road game with two more to play on this trip. Orlando is 5-1 straight up in their last six home games and with this number essentially a pick 'em, the straight up trend is what matters. Give me the Magic on their home floor to continue the Knicks road, ATS woes.

7 Unit – NBA Take #548 ORL Magic (+1.5) over NYK Knicks (-110) (5:00p.m, Saturday November 22nd)
We’ve got the New York Knicks heading down to Orlando tonight to take on the Magic. Both teams enter this matchup off wins, but the context matters. The Knicks just squeezed past the Mavericks on Wednesday, 113–111, and have struggled on the road this season with a 1–4 away record. Orlando comes in hotter, winners of two straight, including a dominant 129–101 victory over the Clippers on Thursday. Even with Paolo Banchero still out, the Magic haven’t skipped a beat, especially at home, where they’re 6–3 on the season. Their defensive intensity spikes in their own building, and that’s going to create problems for a Knicks team that may be without Jalen Brunson, who remains a game-time decision. Both squads are 7–3 in their last ten, but Orlando’s home-court defense is the differentiator here. Franz Wagner continues to elevate his game, and this Magic team has shown they can protect their floor against anybody. I’m backing Orlando to get the job done. To play it smart, take the +1.5 points in your back pocket, but I do expect the Magic to win outright tonight.
