What are NBA Picks Against the Spread?

Most NBA bettors are going to make NBA picks against the spread. This is also known as NBA picks ATS. Sportsbooks give each NBA team a handicap of X amount of points. That means if books think the Lakers are 4 points better than the Celtics they will offer a line of Lakers -4. If a Doc's handicapper has reason to believe the Lakers are much more than 4 points better, his pick against the spread would be to take the Lakers -4. This is how all bets on the spread work unless bookmakers consider both teams to be evenly matched, in which case the line is a pick, AKA pick'em. At Doc's the majority of our NBA selections are against the spread. However, there can be outstanding value on betting NBA totals.

What are NBA Over/Under Picks?

The pace of the game, as well as which team dictates the pace, is a key factor when handicapping basketball games. When pace is an especially strong signal, it may dictate a pick on the over/under. An NBA over/under pick is another way of referring to a prediction on an NBA game point total. NBA total lines are usually well above 200 in today's NBA making them harder for the betting public to find value. For example, the 2004 Detroit Pistons team was very consistently within 5 points of the 90 they averaged. In today's NBA, greater scoring means greater variance. However, professional basketball handicappers can use this to their advantage as the sportsbooks also try to keep track of the higher scoring NBA totals. What are NBA Parlay Picks?

Parlay picks are sucker bets they say! Never bet and NBA parlay they say! Bettors that speak in these absolutes clearly haven't learned how to find value betting basketball. Sure, the payout on parlays at most sportsbooks have gone down to the point where putting two of your picks together for the sake of winning more is not a good investment. But what if your parlay picks could be made on the same game? That is called a correlated NBA parlay. Many sportsbooks offer the ability to make NBA bets against the spread and total in the same game. So if you have a great read on a game and expect one team to quit and fall behind, you may decide to make an NBA parlay prediction. At Doc's our experts will offer a free parlay pick in rare cases. It is not common because we need to find value for our customers on both lines before they move. If our parlay prediction is indeed on the same game, we need to confirm there is value regardless of the fact that you can't line shop the odds on a parlay. Both bets in a parlay must be made at the same sportsbook. If there is a free selection on the total over of -14 and under 200 it was offered knowing that those lines can be found at most Las Vegas sportsbooks and online.

What are NBA Playoff Predictions?

Once the regular season is over the NBA tends to resemble the national football league in many ways. Bettors have much more time to make their NBA playoff picks as teams travel to each other's arenas and rest between series. Making successful NBA playoff predictions is as much about when you bet as it is who you bet on. A series might not start for days. That means an NBA spread may move quite a few points especially as the public bets closer to the action. If we see value in a playoff prediction it will rely heavily on getting the line we are quoting in said NBA pick. In the words of the great Tony George, "We are betting numbers, not teams!" That may not be more relevant than when making picks on the NBA playoff games.

Sorry for the short writeup today as we had technical issues before posting time. We have to hold our noses here and pick the Timberwolves in this matchup. They have been a poor ATS team but have faltered laying big numbers but we like them as a slim underdog tonight. We like the Wolves deep roster to compete to win this one even if Anthony Edwards plays, but lock in your bets soon as if he suits up the line will move. The Wolves won and covered four straight, including the last two in the Bay Area, and we think they are a sharp pick today.

The Pacers are off B2B wins but have never won 3 straight games this season. The Pacers are 6-18 on the year and their last 5 wins included 2 over a Bulls team that is slumping badly and has lost 7 straight games now. Also, Indiana's other 3 wins in that stretch were against teams with a combined record of 16-55 on the season! That said, I don't see them beating a fired up 76ers team that is at home and rested and off a home loss to the Lakers! The Sixers had won 3 straight before that defeat and also they have both Embiid and Maxey listed as probable for this one. Philly has not played a single game yet this week and this is the perfect spot for them to win in blowout fashion on their home floor! 10 of the Pacers last 12 defeats have been by at least 9 points and this one will be too. Edwards is iffy at best for Minny tonight, but you cannot believe an NBA injury report at all. That said, the Warriors at home here and the first time they have seen Minny since the T Wolves waxed them in the Playoffs last year 4-1. I think revenge and motivation is key in this game. It is not the best situation with Green out for GS, but I think Butler and Curry go off here at home. Play the moneyline.

Take Dallas ATS as my top NBA pick for Friday night. This pick falls into one of my top NBA systems and Dallas hands down this superior team especially at home here tonight. I do expect Dallas to step up defensively and dominate the boards here and I believe that they will shoot a very high percentage against this Brooklyn team. This is a Dallas team coming off an impressive victory against Houston winning that game by 13 points despite being 6.5-point underdogs. Brooklyn has struggled defensively this season with opponents shooting 49.5% against them overall as a team including 38.8% from beyond the arc. Play Dallas ATS

7-Unit Play. Take #557 Brooklyn (+8) over Dallas (8:40 p.m., Friday, Dec. 12)

I have been red hot in the NBA and it's because of matchups like this. I have focused on finding value on underdogs that I believe can win outight and I like the Nets chances tonight. When you have teams that are big dogs coming off extended rest, it gives them time to prepare for teams. Yes, the Mavericks have a much better roster than the Nets, but the Mavs are an awful home favorite. Dallas is 0-6 ATS when they are laying points at home, and they won't take the Nets very seriously. Brooklyn is 6-4-1 ATS when they are on the road this season and they have had six days to prepare for this game. Dallas has had an extended break prior to this matchup as well, and they are 9-7 ATS when they are equal rest as their opponent, but Brooklyn is 9-4 ATS in the same scenario. Give me the points with the Nets as I like their chances to win this game outright.

I expect we get a maximum effort in this one from Golden State. The Warriors look for revenge after losing to Minnesota in the playoffs last year. Golden State comes into this game off arguably their best game this season winning by 42 over Chicago. The Warriors will also be fired up as they are expected to get back star Steph Curry after missing more than two weeks.

7 Unit Play - Take #555 Utah Jazz (+7.5) Over Memphis Grizzlies. (8:00p.m, Friday, December 12th)
Utah comes into this game 8-15 on the year, 3-7 in their last 10 games, and presently on a 2-game losing streak. Utah just got done with 2 of the toughest teams in the NBA, dealing with OKC and New York. Utah lost both of those games brutally and went 0-2 ATS during that stretch. It is safe to say we can expect nobody rushing to the window to bet on the Jazz on the road tonight. Memphis is hot right now, going 7-3 in their last 10 games, with a 2-game winning streak and 2-0 ATS in their last 2 matchups. Memphis has done the public good in their last 2 games, and the Jazz have crushed the public in their last 2 games. This is a psychology flip. We believe the market is baiting the public to drill Memphis here at home with a 6-6 home record and proving to ascend to the upside as of late. Utah is a brutal 2-8 on the road this season, which gives no solidification. Utah is 5-1 ATS this season with 2-3 days of rest and 1-0 ATS with 4+ days of rest. Utah also comes in 8-6 ATS after a loss. Memphis, on the other hand, is 5-10 ATS when playing with rest, 4-6 ATS after a win, and 7-2 ATS as a favorite. We love the strong 7-2 ATS as a favorite because this is where the market tends to leak. This is too strong of a metric, and we believe the psychology of the market set this game up for a letdown. Let’s rip the Jazz on a 7-unit position as we believe they make this game extremely competitive. We are not going to touch the moneyline even though we believe there is a slight chance of an outright winner here tonight.

Tonight, we have the Atlanta Hawks taking on the Detroit Pistons, with Detroit laying 7.5 at home. Atlanta enters this matchup fresh off a big offensive performance, dropping 131 on the Wizards, and this Hawks team continues to compete and can put up 130 on any given night. Detroit comes in on a two-game winning streak after handling the Bucks 124–112, and they’ve been pushing the pace and playing with confidence. Both of these teams want to run, attack early in the shot clock, and play in transition. With the tempo they generate, this total is sitting about five to six points too low. Expect a fast game, quick possessions, and plenty of scoring from both sides. Take over 233.5 in this matchup.

Tonight, we get a matchup between the Bulls and the Hornets, with Chicago coming in as the road favorite despite riding a seven-game losing streak. This Bulls team has completely unraveled and has only been able to beat the very bottom-tier teams in the league. Despite having only seven wins, Charlotte has been consistently playing better basketball and competing. At home, with the Bulls searching for any sense of identity, the game is a spot where the points hold clear value. Take the Hornets with the points tonight.
