New York Mets
The Mets finished the 2019 season with an 86-76 record. They missed the playoffs and left fans hoping for a lot more, but we did learn a few things about this team. They have a legit superstar on the team in Pete Alonso. Jeff McNeil made the all-star team and J.D. Davis had a great year too. However, if you're a Mets fan, you have been wanting a lot more than that.
The offseason has been interesting to say the least. They fired Mickey Callaway, hired Carlos Beltran, fired Carlos Beltran and then went through some team selling drama. That said, the Mets still made some good moves this offseason including signing Rick Porcello and Michael Wacha. They also signed Dellin Betances and Jake Marisnick. The Mets always leave you wondering, but if they can stay healthy, they should be much better in 2020.
The 2019 Mets were led by Pete Alonso who finished the season with a ROY trophy in addition to his 53 home runs and 120 RBI. He racked up 72 walks and 183 strikeouts. His slash line was .260/.358/.583 and he earned a total of 348 bases on the year. Of his 155 hits, 30 of them were doubles and 2 were triples.
Jeff McNeil had an excellent season for the Mets with a team high batting average of .318. The lefty racked up 162 hits during the 2019 season. Of those hits, McNeil had 38 doubles and one triple. He finished the season with 23 home runs and 75 RBI. He finished with five stolen bases, 35 walks and 75 strikeouts. He also had a team high OBP with .384 and a slugging percentage of .531. McNeil made the all-star team in 2019 and will look to continue his momentum into the 2020 season.
St. Louis Cardinals
The St. Louis Cardinals are coming off a 91-71 season where they made a run to the NLCS. However, their dream ended there as they were swept by the Washington Nationals. Making the run they did, you might think the Cards would be making some moves in the offseason to get them over the hump. However, this isn't what happened, and we should be used to this as the Cards have rarely been big free agent spenders. They did pick up pitcher Matt Liberatore via a trade from the Rays, and catcher Matt Weiters. That said, they are going to rely on their veteran core to get them back to the playoffs where they hope to make a run.
The Cardinals were led by first baseman Paul Goldschmidt. Goldschmidt appeared in 161 games last season and in that time, racked up 155 hits. Of those hits, he earned 25 two baggers, one triple and 34 home runs. He ended the season 3 RBI short of 100 with 97, walked 78 times and struck out 166 times. Goldschmidt finished the season with a .260 batting average, .346 OBP and a .476 slugging percentage. He'll be leaned on heavily in the 2020 season to bring this team back to the playoffs.
Last Game
In their game on March 3rd, the Mets lost to the Miami Marlins by a score of 6-1. McNeil led the way for the Mets going 2-for-3 with an RBI. His average thus far in Spring Training is .533. Brandon Nimmo, Max Moroff and Pete Alonso also added hits to the total.
St. Louis was on the winning end of the scoreboard with a 6-3 victory over the Houston Astros. Paul Goldschmidt and Paul DeJong went 2-for-3 on the night with Goldschmidt adding an RBI. They got 4 innings out of Dakota Hudson. He gave up two hits, one earned run, walked one and struck out 2 batters.
