Free CFL Week 10 Picks from Expert Canadian Football Handicapper
Coming off last week's reduced three-game schedule, the Calgary Stampeders remain the Gold Standard in the CFL at a perfect 7-0 straight up. When it comes to betting on the games, they join British Columbia at the top of the list with a 5-2 record against the spread.
Getting back to my free CFL pick for Doc's Sports after passing on last week's three-game offering, I have turned my attention to a rematch in a West Division clash on Sunday night.
CFL Week 10 Betting Overview
Week 10 gets underway on Friday night at 8:30 p.m. (ET) with the Ottawa RedBlacks going on the road as 6.5-point underdogs against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers. The total has been set at 54 points. Winnipeg has covered in eight of the last 11 meetings.
Saturday's doubleheader of CFL action kicks things off at 4 p.m. with an inter-division battle between the BC Lions and the Toronto Argonauts. The Lions are favored by three points on the road, with the total set at 50.5 points. Toronto is off to a rough 2-5 SU start (3-4 ATS) in defense of last year's Grey Cup title run.
Later that night in a 9 p.m. start in Edmonton, the Eskimos play host to Johnny Manziel and the Montreal Alouettes as heavy 16.5-point favorites. The total for this inter-division tilt is set at 53 points. Edmonton is tied for second in the West at 5-3 SU, but it has failed to cover in five of its first eight games.
CFL Free Pick of the Week: Calgary at Saskatchewan
Each of these West Division rivals are coming off a bye heading into this Sunday night's 7 p.m. kickoff at Mosaic Stadium in Regina. Calgary is listed as a seven-point road favorite with the betting line for the total set at 48 points.
This will be the second meeting in the three-game season series. The Stampeders gained the early edge in Week 7 with a 34-22 victory as 7.5-point favorites on the road. The total went "over" the closing 47.5-point line in that game. This was part of Calgary's perfect 7-0 SU run through its first seven games. It covered the spread in five of those seven games and the victory against Saskatchewan was the only game that went over the closing line with the other six staying under.
Going back to that first meeting, the Stampeders built an early 24-0 lead by the end of the first quarter and cruised to the 12-point win. With the exception of a nine-point victory against British Columbia as 12.5-point home favorites its last time out, Calgary has won each of its other six games by double figures. When you add in an offense led by Bo Levi Mitchell at quarterback complementing a shutdown defense that is allowing an average of 12.3 points a game, it is hard to see any team in the CFL keeping things close against the dominant Stamps right now.
Saskatchewan went into last week's bye at 3-4 both SU and ATS following a 26-19 loss to Edmonton on the road as a 6.5-point underdog. The total stayed under 52.5 points in that loss. It has stayed under in four of its first seven games overall and in three of its first four games at home. The Roughriders have gone an even 2-2 ATS in those four home games.
Brandon Bridge was the starting quarterback in the first meeting in this division tilt, and he ended that game with 147 yards passing on 19 completions. Look for Zach Collaros to get his chance to avenge that loss after getting the call against Edmonton in Week 8. He completed 22-of-34 passing attempts for 261 yards and one touchdown in the losing cause. It will be interesting to see how well he holds up against the relentless Calgary pass rush.
Calgary has won nine of the last 10 meetings SU and it has a 6-1 edge ATS in its last seven games against Saskatchewan. Nothing I have seen from either team so far would make me go against the Stampeders only giving up seven points. Look for another double-digit victory this Sunday night in Saskatchewan.
