They have won their division in four of the last six years, including last year, and they have won the conference championship game in three of those years. This year they are going to be in tough to add another division title because Washington looks good, but that didn't stop Stanford last year, and you can never count them out - especially when they have the best offensive player in college football playing for them.

It wasn't that long ago that Kevin Sumlin was one of the geniuses of the sport and seemingly a lock for a high-profile NFL head coaching job sooner rather than later. But he never truly recovered from Johnny Manziel's departure, and now he is in Tucson, where coaches go after faltering at big programs. His arrival caps a tumultuous offseason, when Rich Rodriguez was fired after sexual harassment claims and is suing the school.

Let's start with the most pressing issue - this is the third straight team preview I have written about a squad nicknamed the Tigers, and I haven't even gotten to Auburn yet. There are three in the same darned conference. This is the issue the NCAA should be worrying about first. That aside, this version of the Tigers is very hard to predict. They are extremely talented, but experience isn't in abundance. They could be great, or they could be raw. This could be a breakout year or a building one. The coaching could really shine or be a real concern. The team could be a contender or a mess, and nothing would be a surprise. As a bettor I hate teams like this - and not just because of their stupid nicknames.

Will Muschamp is in his third year at South Carolina. Back when he was an assistant at Texas, he was viewed as a rising genius. Well, he's running out of chances to prove it. He flamed out badly at Florida, and while he won nine games last year there wasn't a particularly impressive one among them. Michigan was the closest, but they played that bowl game without a QB or an offense. Muschamp needs to have a good year this year or he could be out, and he'll have to get used to being a DC again - for a very long time.

The Bulldogs face a change after Dan Mullen headed to Florida after nine years in Starkville. It's a step up the ladder for him, but if I was a Mississippi State fan I wouldn't shed any tears. He finished better than fourth in the conference only once, he wasn't building or moving forward, and his message was surely getting old. Recruiting to Mississippi State is tough, but he wasn't massively exceeding a base level. Mullen improved the team significantly from when he took it over, but the progress had stalled. And the team did very well in hiring a replacement. It's quite possible that this is a rare case that a team moves forward by having their head coach hired away.

I will fully admit it - I am bored by Alabama. In awe of what they are doing, and full of respect for Nick Saban and his wizardry, but totally bored. I can't get excited by things anymore - they recruit like crazy, they develop like crazy, and they win like crazy. Ho hum. I mean, their biggest issue this year is whether they should start the quarterback who has a 26-2 career record or the one who is the Heisman co-favorite despite only playing one half of meaningful football.

It took just two years for Kirby Smart to turn Georgia around and deliver as close to the season of fan's dream as you can without quite doing it - they lost the title game in overtime. Now comes an even bigger challenge. It takes a lot for a coach to go from 8-5 to very legitimate national finalist. It takes far, far more, though, to stay at that level year after year.

The Trojans had a solid year last year, winning the Pac-12 after recovering from a mild midseason swoon. And that was enough to make QB Sam Darnold very rich. Now the Trojans have to break in a new QB, and the incentive to do it in a hurry is high because the window in the Pac-12 South is wide open. The team has a big edge on their rivals right now and are in very good shape to win the division and fight for the conference. But not without a decent QB.

Last year was a crazy ride for these Tigers. By Week 7 they had lost twice, and the calls for the head of Gus Malzahn were less than subtle. It seemed like he was completely doomed. But then he ran the table the rest of the regular season, upset both Georgia and Alabama - the two eventual national finalists - and made the SEC Championship Game. They lost that game to Georgia, but faith had been restored. Arkansas tried to get Malzahn to move to his home state, Auburn kept him with a massive seven-year extension, and the path to the future was set.

For the most part I don't have an issue when a coach gets paid. It's a brutal, thankless job, and they might as well get as much as they can. I find it very tough, though, to respect the move Jimbo Fisher made last year. After winning a title at Florida State it was like he got bored. He didn't seem to even try last year, and then he bolted for an obscene payday. Money is money, and Texas A&M isn't short of resources, but it would be very tough to find any ways that he is better off in his new home than he would have been in his old one.

One thing stands out about this Clemson team above all else in my eyes - and after the run they have been on the last few years there is plenty to choose from. When the preseason all-ACC team was announced recently, all four defensive lineman on the squad were from Clemson. I can imagine few things more terrifying than being an opposing offensive coordinator trying to figure out how you are going to keep your quarterback alive for four quarters.

Tom Herman's first season at Texas was not what some fans surely dreamed of. He went 13-1 in his debut at Houston but just 7-6 at the much more prestigious school. But if you look beyond the record you see a program that had a whole lot that needed to be fixed, and you saw some progress - real, significant progress - under Herman. Now the question is whether he can keep the train moving forward and what that will look like this year.

Thirty-five. That is the number of seniors from last year - both fourth- and fifth-year - that the Horned Frogs have lost from the roster. That's a staggering number and a sign that this is a young team. It's also a pretty talented one and one that has a chance to be disruptive in a pretty wide-open conference - perhaps beyond Oklahoma, at least. But with youth comes risks and the potential for downside, and nothing about TCU is certain. They will be well-coached - we know that. And they won't be any fun to play. But can they be a factor in the conference in the end?

Matt Campbell took over a mess of a program in Iowa State after a strong run in Toledo. His first season was a rough 3-9 year, but he took a big step forward last year, climbing all the way to 8-5 with a bowl win. But the season was more than just what the record indicates. The losses were mostly respectable, and there were some incredibly high highs along the way. Campbell is obviously talented. However, can he keep climbing, or is he going to run into a ceiling like he did at Toledo where he hit nine wins three times but never exceeded it?

I might not be consistent in all of my opinions, but I am constant in this - Dana Holgorsen is not a very good head coach, and he is leading West Virginia down a sad and unnecessary oath of sustained mediocrity. He makes Kirk Ferentz look truly elite, and that's another guy who isn't what his program deserves but who keeps sticking around. Holgorsen has some things going for him - mostly that he has a talented and experienced QB when Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and TCU all have new starters and Texas has two young options to choose from. But Holgorsen is Holgorsen, so my faith in his ability to screw it up has no limits.

There are a lot of weird seasons every year in college football, and last year few teams had one stranger than Missouri did. Through six weeks the Tigers were a total disaster. They won just once and fired their defensive coordinator - like it was all his fault. And then they didn't lose again, becoming one of the least likely bowl teams out there. There were some big asterisks beside that streak as we'll discuss in a minute, but the team believes that it was the start of something truly special. And now they have to try to prove it. And the window is small, as their star quarterback, who is the key to it all, will be playing on Sundays next year.

You can play only four seasons as a college football player, but there are players who seem like they were around for a decade or two. Heisman winner Baker Mayfield was one of those guys last year, and so was Ohio State QB J.T. Barrett. Barrett had a very odd career. He was obviously a winner - he went 38-6 as a starter and played a key role in a national title.

It's about that time for Jim Harbaugh. His act isn't wearing thin in Ann Arbor, but it is in other places. After all of the bravado, intensity and craziness, he still hasn't beaten Michigan State or Ohio State, hasn't won the Big Ten, and hasn't really delivered on the promise he brought to Michigan. It's time. He has by far the best team he has had since arriving and a schedule that can work for him. Win now and he can do or say whatever he wants for a long time and no one can question it.

If you asked me off the top of my head how long Baker Mayfield was Oklahoma's quarterback I would say at least seven years. Maybe nine. He was one of those guys who seemed to be around forever. And while it wasn't that long, he sure found a heck of a way to go out. Heisman winner. Playoff berth, and a near semifinal loss in an epic matchup. Now the team has to move on from him, and Lincoln Riley needs to prove he really is the great coach he looked like in his debut and not just a guy who was in the right place at the right time.

Last year Trace McSorley, the now fifth-year senior quarterback, was an easy guy to respect, and he got a lot of credit for success at Penn State. But he was in the shadow of mammoth running back megastar Saquon Barkley. Now Barkley is off for fortune and, perhaps, fame. That means that this is unquestionably McSorley's team now. He faces a tough schedule, a team with a lot of new faces, a re-jigged offensive coaching staff missing their star coach, and mammoth expectations.

Iowa is in a very tough spot. They are the sixth-best team in a five-team conference - and those five teams ahead of them are all potentially going to be extremely good this year. Iowa isn't alone in having this problem, but they have been in some version of this spot often enough that they know how lonely of a place it can be. It could be worse, though - they could be Illinois, Rutgers, Maryland, Indiana or another of the Big Ten programs that are so consistently bad that even reaching the second tier that Iowa has had as a floor to their performance for years seems like an unattainable goal.

The Oklahoma State program has had a string of very good quarterbacks under Mike Gundy - Zac Robinson, Brandon Weeden. Not only would I take Mason Rudolph over any of them without hesitation, though, but I would have taken him over any quarterback in the country last year who didn't play for Oklahoma. He was a special player, but now he is with the Steelers and the team has to move on.

Last year the Wisconsin Badgers ran the table in the regular season without getting a lot of credit for it. They played only two ranked teams, and they were both at home. A team short of big-name stars against a weak schedule and well outside of a major media market is not going to get pulses racing. Their chance at changing the narrative came against Ohio State in the Big Ten Championship Game, and they fell just short.

The year 2016 was a horrible season for the Spartans. A dismal 3-9 record. Multiple players embroiled in sexual assault issues. Endless drama around the administration of the athletic department. It was an absolute disaster of a year by any measure, and since it came after a 12-2 year it was particularly hard for fans to take. But last year the team did a pretty remarkable job of putting that dismal season in the past and moving on.

There were a lot of high-profile coaching hires in the last year. For my money, though, none is easier to root for than the return of Scott Frost to Nebraska. Don't get me wrong - he very likely won't be the most successful coach hired heading into this season. There is too much working against him at Nebraska. But when a star player turns into a star coach and then returns to his alma mater where he won a national title, that is a good story that is easy to get behind - especially when that alma mater hasn't exactly been in the limelight lately.

I have never been anything close to a Florida State fan, and I live a very long way from Tallahassee, but I have to imagine that a lot of fans of the program could only describe last season as an embarrassment. Their National Championship-winning head coach barely went through the motions before leaving town for big money and a different challenge - at a school that can't claim to be as prestigious as the one he left.

This is the ninth year of the Brian Kelly era at Notre Dame. I am surely not the only person with no personal connection to the team who wonders how the team has stayed patient with him for this long. He's far from the worst coach in college football. But he's a long way from the best as well. He has a way of teasing to raise expectations and then destroying hopes just when things get tough.
