Sports Betting Futures Odds: Matthews Once Again Off to Hot Goal-Scoring Start
The Toronto Maple Leafs are tied for the NHL lead in points (14) as of
Thursday, and a big reason for their success is that Auston Matthews is
tied for the top spot in individual points (16) and goals (10). Meanwhile,
action on the college hardwood is soon to begin, and things are heading
down the home stretch in Major League Soccer and NASCAR.

NHL Leading Goal Scorer
(BookMaker)
Auston Matthews (+500)
- In his NHL debut (game one of the 2016-17 campaign), Matthews scored four
goals. Last season he lit the lamp five times in the first five contests.
This time around he started with a ridiculous four multi-goal performances
in the first five games and scored at least once in each of the first six
outings.
Alex Ovechkin (+500)
- Ovechkin led the league in goals (49) with room to spare last season
(five ahead of Winnipeg's Patrick Laine). Even more importantly for him, he
lifted the Stanley Cup for the first time with the Capitals. The
33-year-old is off to a strong start to 2018-19 with eight goals in eight
games.
David Pastrnak (+500)
- Pastrnak may not be as big of a name as Ovechkin or Matthews, but
Boston's 22-year-old forward has made steady progress throughout his
career, from 10 goals in 2014-15, to 15 goals, to 34 goals (70 points), and
to 35 goals (80 points) last season. So far in October he has 10 goals
through nine games.
Nathan MacKinnon (+550)
- Colorado's 23-year-old center poured in a career-high 39 goals during the
2017-18 campaign while compiling 97 total points. MacKinnon appears to be
taking the next step toward stardom with seven goals and eight assists
through eight contests this month. Connor McDavid is a +800 fifth choice.
NCAAB National Championship
Duke (+500)
- Duke used to be stay above the fray of one-and-dones while often
featuring some…gasp!...upper-classmen, but no program can avoid the current
trend of college basketball. And it's not a bad thing for these Blue
Devils, who feature three of the top recruits in forwards Zion Williamson,
R.J. Barrett, and Cam Reddish.
Kentucky (+550)
- In his 10th season with the Wildcats, head coach John Calipari
is searching for his second national title (first since 2011-12). Kentucky
finished fourth in the SEC during the 2017-18 campaign and got bounced in
the Sweet 16, but freshmen E.J. Montgomery, Keldon Johnson, and Immanuel
Quickley may come to the rescue.
Gonzaga (+700)
- Aside from Davidson managing to land Stephen Curry more than a decade
ago, there is no mid-major program that can do what Gonzaga is doing. The
Zags have reached the NCAA Tournament in 20 straight sets (19 for 19 under
head coach Mark Few). Serbian Filip Petrusev joins a front-court with
junior Kllian Tillie.
Kansas (+800)
- In the last three years, Kansas reached the Elite Eight twice in a row
and then advanced to the Final Four. Can freshman shooting guard Quentin
Grimes help the Jayhawks take the next step to their first national title
since 2007-08? North Carolina is a +900 fifth choice. Nevada and Villanova
are +1200 sixth choices.
MLS Cup
Atlanta United (+325)
- Atlanta leads the Eastern Conference with one regular-season match
remaining and will win the Supporters' Shield (best MLS record) by equaling
or bettering New York's result on Sunday. Josef Martinez leads the league
(by eight) with a record 30 goals.
New York Red Bulls (+325)
- New York can take over the top spot and clinch home-field advantage
throughout the playoffs with a win over Orlando City FC and an Atlanta loss
or draw at Toronto (an Atlanta loss and New York draw would result in
tiebreakers to decide it).
Los Angeles FC (+900)
- Los Angeles is currently second in the Western Conference but can pass
Sporting Kansas City with a win in its finale coupled with a K.C. setback.
The club has taken points in all three of its matches this month (2-0-1),
including a 4-2 win over Houston.
Sporting Kansas City (+900)
- Looking for its second MLS Cup (first since 2013), Kansas City has also
been in fine form of late to remain atop the West. It is in the midst of a
four-match point streak and has won two in a row by a combined score of
7-1. FC Dallas and New York City FC are +1000 fifth choices.
NASCAR Monster Cup
Kevin Harvick (+250)
- Eight drivers remain in the chase for the season-long championship
following last week's festivities in Kansas. Harvick finds himself in
second place (one point out of first) heading into the last four races of
the year. He has won seven times in 2018, but none of those have come since
Aug. 12.
Kyle Busch (+250)
- Busch is the current points leader and he is tied with Harvick for the
most victories this season. The No. 18 Toyota is coming off a runner-up
performance in Kansas and it triumphed last month in Richmond. It is worth
noting that Busch won the all-important, year-ending race in Miami three
years ago.
Martin Truex Jr. (+450)
- Truex, who won in Miami last fall to capture the 2017 championship,
stands in third place as the current standings have it-17 points south of
Busch. He owns the third-most victories (four) in 2018 but has not taken
home a checkered flag since mid-July or posted a top-two finish since Aug.
5.
Chase Elliott (+550)
- Elliott had already advanced to this stage of the chase by winning in
Dover on Oct. 7, but for good measure he also got the job done in
Kansas-moving him to fourth in the standings (37 points out of first). The
22-year-old has four top-six finishes in the last five races. Joey Logano
is a +1000 fifth choice.
