For the second week in a row, we saw a veteran PGA Tour player who had largely been forgotten about get his first Tour win in years. Two Sundays ago in Las Vegas, it was 47-year-old Rod Pampling taking home the title. And this past Sunday at the OHL Classic at Mayakoba in Mexico, Pat Perez got his first Tour win since 2009.

It was a pretty watered-down field in Las Vegas last week for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, so I figured it was a good time to pick someone a bit off the radar to win -- and my choice was Scott Piercy. Alas, the American finished T24 after a final-round 71, his worst round of the week by far. He was in contention entering Sunday.

I knew how well Hideki Matsuyama was playing entering last week's World Golf Championships-HSBC Champions big-money event in China. He had won two weeks prior at the Japan Open, was second the next week at the CIMB Classic in Kuala Lumpur and again had a bit of a home-field advantage competing in Asia for the HSBC Champions. Alas, all that travel I thought would cool him off.

Hard not to root for a guy like Justin Thomas. He played collegiately at Alabama, and around 4 a.m. Sunday in Kuala Lumpur he woke up so he could watch the Texas A&M-Alabama live streaming on his computer. Now, you might be thinking that's no big deal, but golfers tend to like their routines and Thomas had to go play the final round of the CIMB Classic later that day.

The 2016-17 PGA Tour wraparound season got underway last weekend with the Safeway Open in northern California, and American Brendan Steele shot a final-round 65 to rally for a one-shot win over Patton Kizzire, who shot 70 on Sunday at Silverado. It was Steele's first victory in 141 starts on the PGA Tour dating to his rookie season when he won the Valero Texas Open.

It has been an interesting few weeks in golf since I last wrote, previewing the Tour Championship. Northern Ireland's Rory McIlroy won that tournament and the FedEx Cup to salvage what had been an otherwise disappointing season on the PGA Tour. I liked England's Paul Casey to win the tournament and the Cup; he finished fourth in Atlanta at 9-under.

I'm rather bummed that the 2015-16 PGA Tour season is ending this week at the Tour Championship. It has easily been my best season in picking winners as I hit on No. 6 (if you include my casual Olympic pick) last week with Dustin Johnson taking the third leg of the FedEx Cup playoffs, the BMW Championship at Crooked Stick in Indiana.

Nothing like a final-round 65 to end a victory drought! That's what Rory McIlroy shot on Monday at the Deutsche Bank Championship at TPC Boston for his first PGA Tour win since the Wells Fargo Championship in May 2015. (McIlroy did have a European Tour win this year.) He was six shots out of the lead when he teed off on a windy Monday and was 4-over-par after his first three holes in Friday's opening round. The win jumped McIlroy from 38th to fourth in the FedEx Cup standings. He's now assured of playing in the Tour Championship.

The PGA Tour's FedEx Cup playoffs opened last week at Bethpage State Park's Black Course, and American Patrick Reed took home his first title of the season to also vault to No. 1 in the points. Reed finished at 9-under 275 to edge out Sean O'Hair and Emiliano Grillo by a shot. Reed had been seventh in the standings, the highest of any player without a victory. Reed now has a 380-point lead over second-place Jason Day, who tied for fourth.

The PGA Tour's regular season concluded on Sunday at Wyndham Championship outside Charlotte with a guy I'll admit I know little about winning: 21-year-old South Korean Si Woo Kim for his first career Tour title. He shot a final-round 67 on Sunday to finish at 21-under 259 (tying tournament record) and beat out former world No. 1 Luke Donald by five shots. Kim really won the tournament on Friday with a course-record 60 and never looked back.

I focused my preview last week on the John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour and barely touched on the Olympic tournament in Rio. But clearly I'm an Olympic genius because my pick to win the gold medal was Great Britain's Justin Rose, and he did so, paying out at +1000 on Bovada. He beat Henrik Stenson, the Swede and tournament favorite, by two shots. I also pegged Patrick Reed as the top of four American golfers, but he finished T11. Matt Kuchar was the top finisher from the USA by earning the bronze medal.

Last week was about the newsiest on the PGA Tour in a long time. First, you had Nike dropping the bombshell that it would be leaving the golf equipment business but still make apparel. So what does that mean for guys like Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, who are under contract? Obviously they can't be obligated to play old Nike clubs and balls.

The major championship portion of the 2015-16 PGA Tour season came to a conclusion on Sunday at Baltusrol as American Jimmy Walker completed a wire-to-wire victory for the first major title of his career -- and thus making all four major winners this year first-timers.

There were two players head-and-shoulders above the rest at least week's Canadian Open in world No. 1 Jason Day and No. 2 Dustin Johnson. I didn't think either would win, though, and they didn't. That honor well to fairly unknown Venezuelan Jhonattan Vegas for his first PGA Tour victory since 2011. He will also represent his country in Rio.

Don't bet against Sweden's Alex Noren on the European Tour when he has a 54-hole lead! Noren had that at least week's Scottish Open and brought home his fifth career Euro Tour title, all coming with a lead entering the final round. Noren shot a final-round 2-under 70 to finish at 14 under at Castle Stuart in northern Scotland and win by a shot over Tyrrell Hatton, with Nicolas Colsaerts, Danny Lee and Matteo Manassero a shot further back.

Dustin Johnson, you made me look bad! I really didn't expect good results from Johnson at last week's World Golf Championships-Bridgestone Invitational at Firestone Country Club in Akron. After all, DJ was playing for the first time since a very emotional win at the U.S. Open. Hard to be focused, I figured.

Bobby Hurley I'm very familiar with. He was a former All-American point guard and two-time national champion at Duke who is currently the head basketball coach at Arizona State. Billy Hurley III? Can't say I knew too much about the guy, but he won the Quicken Loans National at Congressional outside Washington, D.C., on Sunday.

I predicted my fifth winner of the season at last week's U.S. Open at storied Oakmont outside Pittsburgh, but I'm not sure I've ever been so irritated watching a golf event. OK, I had to hedge a bit last week as I believed that either American Dustin Johnson or Aussie Jason Day was going to win the tournament. So I took a prop of those two, Rory McIlroy and Justin Spieth at +130 against the field (-170). And Johnson got that major championship monkey off his back, a year after blowing the U.S. Open at Chambers Bay, by shooting 4-under 276 to win by three shots.

The second major of the season in professional golf gets underway this Thursday with the opening round of the US Open at Oakmont Country Club in Pittsburgh. The US Open is often considered the toughest test the top golfers in the world face each year. This year's venue could be especially difficult considering that five strokes over par was good enough to claim the title the last time this tournament was contested at Oakmont in 2007.

Go ahead and rule out Daniel Berger winning this week's second major of the year on the PGA Tour, the 116th U.S. Open. That's because no player has ever won the week before the Open and then taken that tournament in the same year.
