Well, the U.S. Open in June just got a lot more interesting! Of course, that's the only major to elude Phil Mickelson in his Hall of Fame career. On Monday at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, the same Pebble Beach course that hosts the 2019 U.S. Open, Mickelson finished off a weather-delayed 65, the best final round of anyone in the field, to win that tournament for a record-tying fifth time.

This week, the Tour heads back to California and perhaps the most picturesque course in the United States (it's public, but it's pricey!) for the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. What makes this year's event a bit different from past years is that the U.S. Open will be at Pebble later this summer. It will be the sixth time it hosts that major.

World No.1 Justin Rose put a hammerlock on that ranking Sunday at the Farmers Insurance Open as he shot a final-round 3-under 69 to win the tournament by three over Aussie Adam Scott. Rose opened the event with a 63 on the easier North Course and then shot a 66 on the South on Friday and really wasn't ever much threatened.

Unless you cover the PGA Tour for a full-time living, which I used to do but haven't in a decade, then it's simply impossible to know whom every golfer on Tour is. I heard of Tour rookie Adam Long, but I wouldn't have been able to pick him out of a crowd of three at my local grocery store.

That's what I'm talking about! In the first full-field event of the New Year, we correctly recommended Matt Kuchar - at a cool price of +4000 - to win the Sony Open in Hawaii last week. Kuchar led by two after 54 holes and shot a 4-under 66 in the final round for a 22-under 258 overall and beat playing partner Andrew Putnam by four strokes.

Quite the impressive start to the calendar year for 25-year-old American Xander Schauffele. He entered the final round of the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua on Sunday five shots out of the lead but tied a course record with a 62 and beat 54-hole leader Gary Woodland by a shot. The 11-under-par mark was the second-best score to par in a final-round win in PGA Tour history. It was the largest final-round deficit overcome in the history of the Tournament of Champions at Kapalua. Did I mention that Schauffele actually bogeyed his first hole?

The 2018-19 PGA Tour wraparound season actually began in early October in California wine country with the Safeway Open, but to most golf fans the year annually begins at the Tournament of Champions in Hawaii. That tees off Thursday at the Plantation Course at Kapalua, a par 73 measuring 7,518 yards.

The 2017-18 PGA Tour season concludes this Sunday at the Tour Championship in Atlanta. We projected Rory McIlroy to win the tournament for a second time and Justin Rose to win the FedExCup for the first time. Overall this season, we picked four correct winners entering the finale. We've said it before and will again: Your best golf bets really shouldn't be the winner market (such a crapshoot) but instead the Top 10 prop or head-to-head.

Glad to see good-guy and popular PGA Tour player Keegan Bradley win the weather-delayed BMW Championship on Monday outside Philadelphia, although really Justin Rose should have. Rose, though, bogeyed his 72nd hole and then the first playoff hole to give Bradley his first victory in six years.

I figured that when Brooks Koepka won the PGA Championship to go with his U.S. Open victory that Koepka was a lock to win PGA Tour Player of the Year. And he's still almost surely going to be - I doubt any guy has won two majors in a year and not won it.

Not going to say much about last week's FedExCup playoff-opening victory by rising superstar Bryson DeChambeau at the Northern Trust. It was DeChambeau's third career win, and he was never much challenged on Sunday in winning by four over Tony Finau. The victory moved DeChambeau to No. 1 in the FedExCup points and just about assures that Jim Furyk will pick him as one of his captain's choices for the Ryder Cup.

Tough for golf to make much noise on the American sports calendar this time of year with everyone amped about the NFL preseason and NCAA fall camps. However, Brandt Snedeker made some news last week by shooting a first-round 59 on the way to leading wire-to-wire to take the Wyndham Championship, the final event of the PGA Tour's 2017-18 regular season.

If you read these weekly golf previews, you know that I spend the first portion recapping how my picks went last week. I'm not going to say much about there here because there's plenty to say about this week's 100th PGA Championship, the last major of the year.

Sometimes, I talk myself out of picking the overall favorite in a PGA Tour event, because what fun is going chalk? An average joe could do that every week. Perhaps I should follow my gut more often. I did think there was a pretty good chance that world No. 1 Dustin Johnson would win last week's Canadian Open after coming so close to doing so twice before.

Being honest, I'm not a Tiger Woods fan. He's arrogant and whiny and a terrible role model. All he put his ex-wife through is ridiculous. But, there's no question that golf is much more interesting with Tiger contending - especially in a major tournament. I didn't give Woods much of a chance to win a fourth British Open title even though he was only four shots off the lead entering his final round. Did you know that Woods held at least a share of the 54-hole lead in all 14 of his major victories? So, he doesn't rally in majors.

If you were to take a poll of 100 golf fans and ask them what their favorite major of the year is, 98 of them would say The Masters, and they'd be wrong. The best Major of the year is far-and-away the Open Championship. Because how could it not be? This year's Open Championship featured four completely different days in terms of weather and golf, a hundred storylines, and an edge-of-the-couch worthy final round on Sunday - all culminating in another first-time Major winner, Francesco Molinari.

American Michael Kim said he wasn't sure if he was going to be able to find lodging in Scotland this week for the British Open at Carnoustie, but after winning his way into that tournament with a dominant victory Sunday in the John Deere Classic, I'm sure he'll find a hostel or something where he can spend some of that $1,044,000.

Golf has been rather newsworthy of late, generally overshadowing tournament winners. It's nice for Kevin Na that he won the Greenbrier in West Virginia on Sunday, but all anyone in the golf world wanted to talk about all week was the potential made-for-TV $10 million winner-take-all match between Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson that's being discussed. This is almost surely going to happen, and I'll certainly watch it. What I'd rather see, though, is these two very rich dudes put up $5 million of their own money with the winner-taking-all. That's NOT going to happen.

When I think of Italy, I don't much think of a country that churns out stellar golfers. Soccer players, sure. Chefs, heck yes. Golfers? Not so much. Still, it surprised me to earn that no Italian had won on the PGA Tour since someone named Toney Penna in 1947. That drought ended on Sunday at the last Quicken Loans National to be held in the Washington, D.C., area and hosted by Tiger Woods as Francesco Molinari tied the TPC Potomac course record with an 8-under 62 in the final round to win the tournament by eight shots. That tied for the largest margin of victory on Tour this season. Molinari's total of 21-under 259 broke the tournament record by seven shots.

Another Travelers Championship golf tournament; another Bubba Watson win. Bubba Watson erased a six-shot deficit in the final round by shooting a 7-under 63 to win his third career Travel-ers title. The win marked Watson's 12th PGA victory of his career, and he essentially did it in style by firing two rounds of 63 and by gaining a ton of strokes on the field. Watson's all-around game was impressive as he gained more than three strokes putting en route to his first 63 in Round 2.
