New York Yankees at Los Angeles Dodgers Weekend Series Predictions with Odds and Analysis

This weekend the baseball world is getting blessed with an incredible series between the two World Series representatives from last season and a potential preview of what is ahead again this season. The New York Yankees will travel to Los Angeles to take on the Dodgers. Both teams are leading their respected divisions, but the last 10 games have been drastically different for these two ball clubs. Let’s take a deep dive into the series at hand.
Doc’s Sports offers MLB expert picks for every game on our baseball predictions page.
Where They Stand
The New York Yankees are the hottest team in baseball right now having won nine of their last 10 games and they are bringing a five-game winning streak into the weekend. Their +113-run differential is the best in the league and their 35-20 record is the third best in the MLB. They have gone 17-11 on the road this season which is tied with the Philadelphia Phillies and the Chicago Cubs as the best road record in the league. Their success this season has been catapulted by the unexpected performance of their lineup. Aaron Judge continues to be one of the best hitters in baseball as he has amassed a league leading 4.2 WAR while leading the league with a .391 AVG and finding himself inside the Top Five in homeruns (18), RBIs (47), and runs (51). However, the unexpected support has come from guys like Paul Goldschmidt (1.9 WAR) and Trent Grisham (1.3 WAR). Goldschmidt has found his swing again as he is hitting .347 as he joins Judge as the only two Yankees to eclipse the 50-hit mark. Grisham is second to Judge in homeruns as the veteran outfielder has uncharacteristically clubbed 12 homeruns through 153 at-bats. It also helps that Max Fried has stepped up his game after the Yankees lost Gerrit Cole. Fried is leading the charge for the AL Cy Young award and he has the Yankees pitching staff in sixth in the league with a 3.25 ERA.
As for the Dodgers, they are just 5-5 over their last 10 games as they have stumbled over the last month of baseball. They have gone 13-12 in the month of May, though they have won two of their last three series against playoff caliber teams. They hold a two-game lead in the NL West with a 34-22 record and their +65-run differential is the second-best mark in the NL. They have excelled at home, going 19-8 through their first 27 home games. The Dodgers are second in the league in runs, OPS, and homeruns. Shohei Ohtani, like Judge, has just reset expectations to a higher level. He leads the league with 20 homeruns through 54 games, and he has recorded 35 RBIs, 11 stolen bases, and has a 1.042 OPS. His OPS is actually second to Freddie Freeman, on the team, who has a 1.044 OPS. Freeman has hit nine homeruns and is second in the MLB with a .359 AVG. Teoscar Hernandez is second on the team with 10 homeruns while Andy Pages is tied with Freeman for third. Will Smith has continued to be an unsung hero for the Dodgers as his 2.2 WAR is tied for second on the team as he is hitting .338 through 44 games. The pitching staff has been plagued by injuries once again as the Dodgers have over $100 million worth of arms on the IL. One consistent has been Yoshinobu Yamamoto who has a 2.0 WAR and has seven quality starts in 11 starts this season.
Team Betting Notes:
New York Yankees:
- The New York Yankees are just 27-28 ATS this season through their first 55 games and have covered just 12 of their 28 road games.
- The Yankees have seen the south side of the game total in 31 of their 55 games this season which ranks inside the Top 10 in Under performances this season.
- The Yankees lead all AL teams in runs scored on the road as they are averaging 5.39 runs per game on the road this season.
Los Angeles Dodgers:
- The Los Angeles Dodgers are just 27-28 ATS this season through their first 55 games and have gone 14-13 ATS at home.
- The Dodgers are tied for the league lead with 32 Overs. Their 57.1% Over% is amongst the best in the MLB.
- The Dodgers lead the league in runs scored at home as they are averaging 6.15 runs per game in front of their hometown fans this season.
Player Highlights:
New York Yankees:
- Though Fried deserves the attention he has garnered this season, Carlos Rodon has been excellent as well as the veteran Southpaw has posted a 2.2 WAR and a 2.60 ERA through a team best 72.2 innings.
- Goldschmidt is hitting .421 on the road this season and has the majority of his homeruns and RBIs away from home, but he is hitting just .286 against RHP and he will face three righties during this series.
- Ben Rice has hit seven of his 11 homeruns off right-handed pitching this season and he has a .866 OPS against righties.
Los Angeles Dodgers:
- Mookie Betts is hitting just .204 against lefties this season and he has just two hits in 30 career at-bats against Fried.
- Though Ohtani is still hitting .324 against lefties this season, he has just a .900 OPS against them compared to his 1.113 OPS he has against right-handed pitchers.
- Freeman has reached base in 11 of his last 12 games and he has an elite 1.065 OPS at home this season.
Game 1 Preview – Max Fried (7-0, 1.29 ERA) vs. Tony Gonsolin (2-1, 4.68 ERA)
Game 1 Analysis: In their careers against Fried, only Ohtani, Tommy Edman, and Miguel Rojas have sustained success. Betts, Freeman, and Hernandez have gone a combined 6/53 with just one homerun amongst the three sluggers. On top of that, the Yankees have dominated on the road thanks to the likes of Rice and Goldschmidt stepping up on the road. Home field advantage gives the Dodgers the edge for the series, but with the way Fried has been pitching paired with his proven success against the Dodgers lineup, it is hard to bet against the sample size. Yankees win a low scoring game to steal the opener.
My Pick: New York Yankees to Win -110, Under 8.5 +110
Game 2 – Will Warren (3-2, 4.09 ERA) vs. Landon Knack (2-2, 5.22 ERA)
Game 3 – Ryan Yarbrough (2-0, 3.06 ERA) vs. Yoshinobu Yamamoto (6-3, 1.97 ERA)
Series Picks:
After the series opener, I expect there to be a ton of runs on both sides with the lack of pitching aside from Yamamoto. Additionally, I expect the Dodgers to win a tough series at home and get back on track. Outside of the first game of the series, the numbers heavily favor the Dodgers and with the Yankees pitching rotation lacking depth, once the Dodgers get past Fried, they should have no problems giving their pitchers enough run support to claim the victory. The Dodgers will win the final two games of this weekend series and claim another series win over their AL rival.
