The Baylor Bears desperately need to move on from the mess of the end of the Art Briles era. Jim Grobe as interim coach last year never really seemed like a good idea, and after a strong start everything just fell apart. The program needed to take drastic action to get back on track, and they did a very good job of it. Matt Rhule turned a clueless and drifting Temple squad into a force in just four years. He went from 2-10 in Year 1 to 10-4 in Year 3, and 10-3 the next year before he left for this job. Rhule is going to succeed at Baylor. I feel confident in that. It just remains to be seen how long it takes him to get there.

I've now written 30 college football team previews this week. This one may be my favorite. Why? Well, I could never get tired of writing 4-8 regarding this team. It is like poetry. Music for my soul. Brian Kelly is smug. His program is smug. They get more attention than they ever deserve. I know that they aren't going to stay this bad for long, so I have to enjoy it while I can. And I do. 4-8. 4-8. 4-8. So nice. How did they do it? And can they avoid doing it again? Lord, I hope not, but let's take a closer look, shall we.

In total I'm writing 30 of these team previews this week. By normal measures Minnesota would not make that cut. They haven't been relevant since, well, forever. They get in for one big reason, though - P.J. Fleck. I'm a huge fan of the former Western Michigan coach and can't believe that some of the schools that had open positions let a team like Minnesota grab him. He's going to be a very good one.

There is nothing tougher for a program than replacing a legendary coach. Just ask Texas. Early returns indicate, though, that Virginia Tech did a great job of it when they brought in Justin Fuente last year to take over for Frank Beamer. Beamer's on-field performance had slid in his last couple of years, but Fuente ratcheted things up nicely and went 10-4 last year. Fuente is intense in a very good way. You listen to an interview with him and you want to jump up off the couch and tackle something. Nothing is certain, but if Fuente was a stock I'd be buying. So, what does he have in store as an encore?

Tennessee used to be really good. A national title in 1998, and years of being a team you just always expected to be in the mix. Lately, though, they have just been kind of sad. Last year they started out looking like they had a way to make the sadness end. But then they crashed spectacularly back to earth. Now they face a whole lot of upheaval, with six key players gone via the draft and several other holes to fill as well. Butch Jones has yet to give his employers $4.6 million of value in his years in the SEC. It would be a good time for him to take a step forward, but that is going to be very tough to do in this spot.

The Pittsburgh Panthers wound up with an 8-5 record last year in a season that ended with a loss to Northwestern in the Pinstripe Bowl. On the surface that would seem to be a season that was at best a modest success. Yet people are much more enthusiastic about the season than that. And for good reason - the squad beat both National Champion Clemson (on the road, no less) and Big Ten champ Penn State.

Last year Stanford won 10 games, but they lost to their two best opponents - Washington and Colorado - and they lost to the former by 38 points. They have been an elite team for a long time now, but they didn't seem to be of the same caliber last year. So now they have to turn the corner. And they have the tools to do just that. This year could be good, and it feels like next year they could really be dangerous. While long-time rivals Oregon are wallowing in the pits of despair, Stanford looks to stay at or near the top of the conference.

In the early days of January 2015 Oregon played in the National Championship Game, losing to Ohio State. The next year they were 9-4. Then 4-8. And by January of 2017 Willie Taggart - a guy who was 4-8 in 2014 at South Florida and 11-2 last year - was the head coach, and Mark Helfrich was an afterthought on the ash heap of coaching history - the guy who destroyed what Chip Kelly handed to him on a silver platter.

Mark Richt has now been at Miami for a year, and I still am not sure I am used to the idea of that. His 9-4 record in his return to the site of his college glory is impressive enough by itself, but what is more striking is that the Hurricanes already seem to have some mojo back. One of the great programs of the 1980s and 1990s has been some degree of embarrassing ever since their last national title in 2001. College football is better when Miami is good.

I have written well over 20 of these previews this week, and yet this is the first one for a team outside of the power conferences. South Florida isn't typically a team that would get that kind of attention, but there is a lot going on here. Former coach Willie Taggart leapt up to take over the raging tire fire that is Oregon. He leaves behind an elite offense, and the power to run that now lies with Charlie Strong, who left behind his own raging tire fire in Texas for Tom Herman to fix.

I am both fascinated and annoyed by how Mike Leach is covered in the mainstream media. His teams and how they are playing almost never get any attention. It's because reporters are too busy fawning over his pirate obsession and the other quirks that hide the fact that he refuses to coach defense. Today I read on not one but two different outlets that he isn't a particular fan of hot dogs. That's the kind of info that leads to winning bets.

On the surface, Bill Snyder pulled off some magic in his 25th year at the helm of the Wildcats. He finished 9-4 despite a challenging start and far from the most talented team out there. That sounds impressive. The problem, though, is that they lost to the four best teams they played - Stanford, West Virginia, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. So, they won the games they couldn't afford to lose - including their last four - but they ultimately weren't a great team. Really, that is much of the Snyder era in a nutshell. He is masterful at getting as much as he can out of what he has, and he is every bit of the legend people think he is, but being at Kansas State means almost never having enough of the talent and depth you need to be a real contender.

From where I'm sitting, West Virginia head coach Dana Holgorsen is basically Gus Malzahn at Auburn. Both guys were lauded as offensive geniuses when they took the job. Both have been given a lot of time to shine. Both have had big wins and have been good at times. But neither has really shown a knack for building a real contender. If you want to defend them, both have big issues to overcome - Auburn has to share a state with the behemoth that is Alabama, and West Virginia faces an insane geographical hurdle playing in the Big 12.

Tom Herman is the latest coaching genius. He has been in charge of a team for just two years, but he worked some miracles in Houston - both on the field and in recruiting - and he now has the keys to one of the iconic programs in the country. Can he prove that he is up to the immense challenge, or will he join the scrap heap of other geniuses to rise further and faster than they can deliver on? The good news for him is that the shoes he is filling left behind by Charlie Strong aren't exactly big. Herman could be just mediocre for the Texas Longhorns and he'd be lauded as a hero is comparison.

Jim Harbaugh certainly hasn't been boring in his time at Michigan. And he has won plenty of games. Now it's time for him to take the next step. He hasn't beaten Urban Meyer and Ohio State yet, and that means that he hasn't yet reached the top level of the Big Ten. It's going to happen at some point, but is this the year? He faces a lot of changes, but he's not short of talent - and he doesn't have a whole lot of excuses. A lot of people want to argue that next year is when the window really opens for this team. He is not one to be particularly patient, though, so he won't have any interest at all in waiting.

After looking around and sending out a lot of feelers, the LSU Tigers made the internally popular decision to give Ed Orgeron the full time head coaching role. He had been the interim coach for the final eight games last year after Les Miles was fired. Now we have a whole season to see if the popular decision was the right one. Personally I like Orgeron, but I still need to be convinced that he is up to a job of this caliber. To me he feels like a transitional pick - the guy between a long-time coach and his ultimate long-time replacement - but I would be happy to be wrong for his sake.

There is a whole lot we could have talked about when it came to the Oklahoma Sooners. But one story shockingly trumped them all. On June 7 Bob Stoops retired, making 33-year-old offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley the new head coach. Everyone knew that Stoops would leave or retire at some point, but it was all but impossible to see it happening now. And now we are left to figure out whether that is going to have a massive impact on the team.

It's a sign of the state of the lowly SEC East that Jim McElwain has won the division in both of his years at Florida, yet he has yet to field a team that is particularly terrifying. Sure, it's much better than what Will Muschamp had done, but that's not exactly a big hurdle to get over. Don't get me wrong, he has done a good job given what he has had to work with, and his future is pretty bright, but it's still a work in progress, and if he were in a stronger division he wouldn't have anything like two division titles to his credit.

This team is not perfect. Far from it, in fact. But Mike Gundy clearly likes to have fun, and increasingly he is making his team a whole lot of fun to watch. They go for the big play. They pass like crazy. They take risks. They probably aren't as good as a team like LSU, but they are always fun to watch while LSU often makes you want to poke your own eyes out to end the suffering. What they need to do, though, is find a way to be both fun and successful. They have a bit of an opportunity. Their rivals in Norman are a better team, but with a shocking late coaching change to deal with they could be vulnerable. This may be the best look at glory that the Cowboys have had.

Paul Chryst is proof that looking smarter is as much about where you are as who or what you are. At Pitt he looked like a very ordinary coach. He was exactly .500 through three seasons. He hasn't changed much about what he is doing since returning to Wisconsin, and while his talent and resources are better they aren't exactly profound, but he is 21-6 through two years, has two bowl wins, and has a decent look at an 11- or 12-win season again this year. He's doing a very good job, and his team is poised, with a big help from circumstances, to have a very strong season.

Was the third year of this Bobby Petrino era a success? It depends how you look at it, I guess. On one hand they won a Heisman with Lamar Jackson - something that doesn't often happen for schools like Louisville - and they were ranked third in the country as late as the middle of November. On the flip side, though, the wheels fell off in horrible, embarrassing fashion late, and the team was exposed as a paper tiger when it really mattered. They had the best look they have ever had at serious national relevance, and they folded badly. And they are still a program that thinks it's okay to have a guy as morally bankrupt as Petrino in charge as long as they win. So, judging the season is all about perspective, I guess.

In 2013 Gus Malzahn won pretty much every national coaching award there is as he led the Auburn Tigers to just three points short of beating Florida State and winning the national title. It was his first year at the helm, and he has spent the time since making a pretty compelling case that the win had more to do with the players he inherited than anything else.

There was a huge change last year in Athens as Mark Richt moved on after 15 years in charge - despite winning 10 games in his last season - and Kirby Smart took over as head coach. The results weren't terrible, but they weren't hugely inspiring, either. That was to be expected, though - growing pains are inevitable after a long tenure for any coach, and that's even truer when the new coach is an outsider. This year, then, will serve as a much bigger indication of how much progress Smart is making and how soon he will have this team humming along at full steam. It's a big year for the Bulldogs.
