Scott Frost is expected to be nothing less than a Savior.
The former Nebraska starting quarterback, Frost is back in Lincoln. And he brings with him a lightning-fast offense that helped Central Florida to an undefeated season and a self-proclaimed National Championship, while earning Frost national Coach of the Year recognition.
Frost is now tasked with revitalizing a Cornhuskers program that has slid deeper and deeper into irrelevance. The Cornhuskers won just four games last season. It was the worst season and the fewest wins for a Nebraska team since 1961. Frost was quoted this offseason as saying, "We've gotta fix everything."
Frost is implementing a completely new system. He didn't recruit any of the players currently on campus, and he has his work cut out for him. Frost spent seven years at Oregon, where he learned Chip Kelly's spread attack. The Nebraska faithful, born and bred on option football, are thrilled to have a run-based spread option attack back in Lincoln. But it will take time for the new coach to get players that fit his scheme.
Nebraska is not devoid of talent. They have four starters back along on the offensive line, their top two receivers, and their top five running backs. The questions on this side of the ball are all about who will line up under center. Frost will have an open competition this fall and has four potential starters, none of whom have been in the program more than one season.
Last year's defense was one of the worst in school history. The Huskers allowed a whopping 36.4 points per game, No. 115 in the country. They were also outside the Top 100 in total defense and rushing defense. Nebraska has eight starters back from that group. They are keeping the same 3-4 base defense that they used last year. With the same guys. But Frost is hoping that a simpler scheme will lead to increased production.
Nebraska will have a chance to get the ball rolling downhill with three straight home games to start the year. That includes a game against Pac-12 foe Colorado on Sept. 8. Unfortunately those three games roll right into a brick wall: at Michigan in the Big Ten opener.
The Huskers also have to face Wisconsin, Ohio State, Northwestern and Iowa all on the road. But that means that they should be excellent at home, hosting Purdue, Minnesota Illinois and Michigan State.
I think Nebraska will go 6-1 at home this year, beating Akron, Colorado, Troy, Purdue, Minnesota and Illinois while losing to Michigan State. That would mean that this team needs to pick up just one road upset in order to get to seven wins. That Northwestern game is really the key. But that's also a pretty slender margin for error.
Still, I will buy into Frost and take this one 'over'.
