UFC 143 Odds and Betting Picks
by T.O. Whenham - 2/3/2012
When UFC 143 ends on Saturday night we will have witnessed, at least for the time being, the end of an era. Georges St. Pierre absolutely dominated the welterweight division. While no fighter could beat him, injuries have got the best of him. He’ll still have his day when he is healthy, but on Saturday an interim titleholder will be named.

The inaugural “UFC on Fox” event in November, which saw Junior dos Santos claim the Heavyweight title, was a ratings and critical success, so they are trying it again. Last time there was only one fight televised, so this event should be three times as fun — we’ll see a light heavyweight main event and two strong middleweight fights.

Building upon the success of the first UFC on Fox, this card will feature a main event that could determine the next title contender as former divisional champion Rashad Evans -185 (odds from Bovada) battles undefeated Phil Davis +150 with a shot at the reining UFC 205-pound Champ Jon Jones on the line.

The UFC is heading back to Brazil for the second time and for the first since UFC 134 last August, on Saturday for UFC 142. The last card was a rousing success with rabid crowds and strong matches. They are back again with a very Brazilian-heavy card. Every single fight on the card has at least one Brazilian, and there are 12 in total in the t0 bouts. The most famous of Brazilians — Anderson Silva — won’t be in action, but featherweight champion Jose Aldo is a solid replacement.

by T.O. Whenham - 12/29/2011
On Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas it’s time for the 18th and final major event of a very busy year for the UFC. There’s no title on the line for this one, but the main event sure doesn’t lack intrigue. Brock Lesnar finally returns to action for the first time since October of last year. He has been hit hard by health issues — and a couple of legal ones as well — but he’s back in form and ready to go. He faces Alistair Overeem, with the winner in line to face Junior dos Santos for the Heavyweight Championship.

The curtain is about to fall on 2011, but not before heavyweights collide in the main event of UFC 141. On Dec. 30, Brock Lesnar (+115) battles Alistair Overeem (-145) with a shot at the UFC Heavyweight Championship on the line. One is a highly decorated two time NCAA All-American collegiate wrestler while the other was the 2010 K-1 Kickboxing Grand Prix Champion and one of the most lethal strikers in Mixed Martial Arts.

The UFC returns to Toronto again on Saturday for UFC 140. The main event is one fans have been waiting for — another chance to see if Jon Jones can continue to live up to the impossible hype surrounding him. No one has defended the light heavyweight title twice successfully since Chuck Liddell did it in 2006, so Jones could cap an impressive year in style with a win here.

Another week, another UFC event — this one is in San Jose on Saturday night. The UFC has had a ton of events in the last month, and I really don’t understand why we are seeing this one now. Headlining the show will be former two-division Pride champion and the last man to wear the Strikeforce 205-pounds belt, Dan Henderson -105. UFC 135 Predictions: Jones vs. Jackson Betting Picks

On Sept. 24, UFC 135 will mark an important moment in both the light heavyweight division and the career of Jon Jones. Chuck Liddell successfully defended his 205 pound title four times. Since Liddell’s run came to an end there have been six different title holders, including Jones and his UFC 135 opponent Rampage Jackson. If you believe in such things, then you would be certain that UFC 133 is cursed. Jon Jones was supposed to defend his light heavyweight title against Rashad Evans, but he got hurt and had to back out. Phil Davis took his place, but injured himself in mid-July and had to be replaced on short notice by Tito Ortiz. Antonio Rogerio Nogueira was supposed to face Rich Franklin, but the Brazilian was hurt and the fight was scrapped. Jose Aldo was rumored to be on the card, but he got hurt as well. Alessio Sakara tore his ACL so he was unable to fight Jorge Rivera, and Constantinos Philippou was moved up from the undercard to be his replacement.

It’s time for another UFC event. UFC 132 enters the octagon on Saturday, July 2 at MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. The UFC returns to the MGM Grand Garden Arena on Saturday, May 28, for UFC 130: Rampage vs. Hamill. After years of lobbying by the UFC, MMA is now legal in the province of Ontario. So this weekend the UFC invades Canada’s biggest city for the first time on Saturday night when they bring UFC 129 to Toronto. Not only is it their first time there, but it will be in front of the largest crowd ever for one of their events — it takes place in the sold out home of the Blue Jays, the Rogers Centre. That’s a hideous barn of a building, but with 55,000 screaming fans in it there should be lots of life and atmosphere.

I normally don’t do previews of the UFC Fight Night cards, but there are a few reasons I am choosing to here -- the card, which will be contested in Seattle at the sadly vacant former home of the Sonics, is particularly interesting, there isn’t another regular UFC event for more than a month, and last weekend’s event went so well for us that I want to keep riding the wave. With all that said, here’s how the main card breaks down for this Saturday’s event (all odds are from Sports Interaction):

The UFC was a huge hit the last time it went to Sydney, Australia - for UFC 110 last year - so they are heading back for UFC 127. The UFC is wasting no time putting their stamp on the New Year -- their first event of the year takes place on New Year’s Day. UFC 125 takes place at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Jan. 1, 2011. The event is notable mostly because of how light the average weight of the fighters is -- there are no heavyweights on the whole card, the only title fight features lightweights, and the preliminary card features the first two featherweight fights held under the UFC banner.

UFC returns to Montreal - an obviously successful location for them - for the fourth time since UFC 83 in April of 2008 on Saturday, Dec.11 for UFC 124. Interestingly, UFC 83 was where heavyweight champ Cain Velasquez made his UFC debut. This is the second time that Georges St. Pierre -- perhaps the area’s most popular athlete right now - headlines one of those cards. At UFC 83 he got his revenge on Matt Serra in convincing fashion.

The UFC must not like Germans very much. If they really did like them then they would bring a much better card to Oberhausen, Germany, for the second UFC card in Deutschland. The UFC heads to a somewhat unlikely spot this week - Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The fine folks of Indiana are regularly treated to great football, but this card isn’t up to quite the same world-class caliber. The main event is a bit of a head-scratcher - there have certainly been stronger, more interesting, and more relevant matches recently. Heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar and undefeated interim heavyweight champ Shane Carwin will meet to determine the outright Heavyweight champ. The year started for the UFC with UFC 93 on Jan. 17 in Dublin when Dan Henderson beat Rich Franklin by split decision in the main event. Now we're almost at the end of the year, and we just have one event left. UFC 107 will take place on Saturday, Dec. 12 at the FedEx Forum in Memphis and will feature a main event between B.J. Penn and Diego Sanchez for the lightweight championship.

UFC 106 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 11/20/2009
If it seems like just a couple of days since we had the last UFC event, that's because it was. UFC 106 comes just one week after UFC 105. There are a couple of bg differences, though - UFC 105 was on free TV while UFC 106 is a good old pay-per-view event, and last weekend's fights were in England while they return to the cozy confines of Las Vegas this time around.

UFC 105 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 11/13/2009
After a bit of a break, it's time for another UFC event. UFC 105 is the first of two events to be held on consecutive weekends. This event will be headlined by the ancient but still wildly-popular Randy Couture and will take place in Manchester, England on Saturday, Nov. 14 and will be available for viewing for free on Spike TV.

UFC 104 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 10/22/2009
After an abnormally long break, the UFC is back in action with another pay-per-view event. UFC 104: Machida vs. Shogun will take place on Saturday, Oct. 24 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles. The home of the Lakers, Kings, and that other pseudo-NBA team will host a card that doesn't have a lot of top-end star power, but which should go a long way towards sorting out the pecking order in the light heavyweight division.

UFC 103 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 9/17/2009
There are two kinds of UFC cards - those that can't get here soon enough, and those that just aren't that thrilling. UFC 100, with its three world-class headline matches, was definitely an example of the former. UFC 103, which takes place on Saturday, September 19 in Dallas, definitely falls into the latter category.

UFC 102 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 8/26/2009
The UFC invades the Pacific Northwest for the first time with UFC 102, which takes places in Portland on Saturday. Unlike many of the UFC events this one doesn't have a catchy title. I'd suggest that they could call it 'UFC 102: The Lamest Main Event Ever'. I find it hard to get excited about the heavyweight tilt that tops the card, but there is still some intrigue, and some betting opportunities all over the card.

UFC 101 Picks and Predictions

UFC 101, with the always unnecessary name being 'Declaration' this time, will take place on Saturday, August 8 in Philadelphia at the Wachovia Center, the home of the Flyers and the 76ers. As is usually the case this card offers several interesting matches, and more than a few good betting opportunities. Here's a look at how it all breaks down in my eyes (all odds are from Bodog):

UFC 100 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 07/08/2009
The UFC has made it into triple digits with their events, and they are celebrating that impressive milestone by putting together what is quite likely the best card they have ever had. The event, taking place Saturday at the Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas, features two title fights and three other potential thrillers on the main card, and a very solid preliminary card as well.

UFC 99 Picks And Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 6/11/09
It took the UFC 99 events before they crossed the pond to mainland Europe. UFC 99: The Comeback takes place in Cologne, Germany on June 13. The Germans haven't seemed to be particularly warm in their welcome. Minors have been banned from the event and government and public interest groups have been far from supportive of the group. It's as if the organization is back facing the same attitudes they faced back home years ago - the perception that the sport is just human cockfighting.

UFC 98 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 05/21/2009
It's time for another UFC event - UFC 98 takes place May 23 in the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. The story of this event isn't who is fighting, but rather who isn't. A superstitious person would assume that this card was cursed. The main event was supposed to be Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir, but that was delayed when Mir injured his knee.

UFC 97 Predictions

UFC returns to Montreal for the second time, but it looks much different than the first. Last time the draw was hometown hero Georges St. Pierre, and he delivered in thrilling fashion. This time we have a one-sided main event, albeit one featuring Anderson Silva, the biggest name in MMA. We also have a washed up superstar, Chuck Liddell, trying to regain some glory at the top of the undercard.

It's time for yet another UFC event. The card, headlined by a light heavyweight tilt between Keith Jardine and Quinton Jackson, takes place on Saturday, March 7 in Columbus, Ohio. To get you ready for the event, here's a preview and some predictions. We're on a hot streak with the picks over the last two events, so here's hoping it can continue (odds are from Bodog):

UFC 95 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 02/19/2009
It's time for another UFC event. UFC 95 won't be quite the spectacle that the bigger events are - it lacks a big headline event, and it's not a pay-per-view event. That's not all bad, though - it will be available on free TV, so that leaves you with more money to bet on the fights. Incidentally, the fights will be shown on Spike on a tape-delayed basis because the event is in London and the time zones don't work out.

UFC 94 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 01/29/2009
The UFC has made a habit recently of booking deep and entertaining cards for their bigger events. They've really outdone themselves with UFC 94, though. The undercard is only solid, but it's more than made up for by one of the best, and most anticipated, main events in the history of the UFC. Two champions collide for Georges St. Pierre's welterweight belt. If B.J. Penn, the lightweight champion, wins he will become the first to hold title belts in two different weight classes at the same time. Beyond the hardware, though, this fight is soaked in history.

Affliction: Day of Reckoning Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 01/21/2009
The UFC has a massive card coming up at UFC 94, but there is some very good MMA action to get through before we get to that. The great Fedor Emelianenko will be in action on Saturday in Affliction's second-ever card. He's clearly the headliner as he is perhaps the biggest name in all of MMA, and he tops a solid card full of interesting fights made up of UFC castoffs or guys who have resisted the allure of Dana White.

UFC 93 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 01/16/2009
UFC 94, featuring the battle between Georges St. Pierre and B.J. Penn, may be the one that everyone is looking forward to. Before that comes along, though, there is UFC 93. It takes place in Dublin as part of UFC's ongoing efforts to establish itself across the ocean. This card isn't nearly as intriguing as the next one, but it still has some highlights. More importantly, it still provides opportunities to bet. Lots of them in this case. Here's a look at Doc's Sports UFC 93 predictions.

UFC 92 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 12/23/2008
UFC has a Christmas present for us. It's going to be a couple of days late, but it's more than worth the wait. UFC 92, taking place on pay-per-view from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Dec. 27, has the potential to be one of the best UFC events we have seen. It has not one, not two, but three main events. Here's a look (all odds are from Bodog):

UFC 91 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 11/07/2008
For the first time in a while, a UFC event is headlined by a fight between superstars that will have appeal beyond the hardcore fans of MMA. That's not to say that recent UFC cards have been bad - far from it. It's just that they have featured fights that are more for the converted fans than for the general public. UFC 91, taking place in Las Vegas on Nov. 15, is different.

UFC 90 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 10/16/2008
If it seems like there is a constant and endless stream of UFC events these days it's because there is. UFC 90 will take place on Oct. 25 in Chicago. That's just one week after UFC 89. MMA fans will be happy to hear that this card is far more interesting than the one in England for UFC 89. If anyone is left standing by the time this one starts, that is. Leading up to the event, fighters have been getting scratched because of injuries.

UFC 89 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 10/08/2008
UFC returns to the UK for their next event when UFC 89 takes place in Birmingham, England. This card holds far less star power and intrigue than their typical events. So much so, in fact, that they are giving this one away for free instead of making it a pay-per-view. It will be shown live on TV in Britain, and on tape delay in North America on Spike. Because of the tape delay, you should be able to make a few bucks from your stupid friends who will be amazed by how you seem to know the outcome of every match as it happens.

UFC 88 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 09/05/2008
Another in the relentless march of UFC events is upon us. On Saturday, Sept. 6 in Atlanta it is UFC 88: Breakthrough. The name is kind of silly this time, and the card isn't the most exciting we have seen in a while. Still, even an average UFC card is better than a lot of things, and there is no better way to cap off a long and hopefully profitable day of college football.

UFC 86 Predictions

The UFC returns to action on Saturday with UFC 86. It isn't the highest profile card, and casual fans probably aren't that excited, but there is more than enough intrigue and uncertainty to make this one have real potential. Here are my UFC 86 predictions for the main highlights of the card. All odds are from 5Dimes.

The Ultimate Fighting Championships return to England for UFC 85. The card isn't as glamorous or filled with big names as recent cards, but fans of the sport will nonetheless find more than enough to keep themselves entertained, and hopefully make a few bucks as well. The dramatically creative folks at UFC are calling this card Bedlam. Here's a look at the bedlam that might ensue on the main card (odds are from Bodog):

UFC 84 Predictions
by T.O. Whenham - 05/01/2008
UFC 84 is just around the corner, and it offers one of the deepest and most competitive cards we have seen in a while. It takes place on May 24 from the MGM Grand Garden in Las Vegas. The main event is a lightweight championship bout between champion B.J. Penn and Sean Sherk. There are a couple of light heavyweight bouts on the card that could be at least as entertaining. Wanderlei Silva will try to bounce back from a loss to Chuck Liddell when he faces Keith Jardine. Interestingly, Jardine's last fight was a win over Liddell.

UFC 83 Predictions

The UFC heads north of the border for the first time on April 19 when it invades Montreal. The Bell Center, the home of the Montreal Canadiens, sold out instantly and the crowd will be rabid. They probably would be anyway, but they'll be especially insane because Georges St. Pierre, their hometown hero, will be defending his title in the main event. It should be crazy. Here's Doc's UFC 83 predictions:

Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott MMA Preview
by T.O. Whenham - 01/24/2008
Kimbo Slice vs. Tank Abbott - one of the most bizarre, over-hyped MMA fights in recent memory. The unproven Internet sensation meets the has-been for glory and not much else at Elite XC 'Street Certified' on Saturday Feb. 16. It probably won't be much of a fight, but it will certainly be a spectacle. The question of interest, though, is whether there is a betting opportunity. Here's a look.

UFC 80 is in the books, so it is never too early to look ahead to the next time a bunch of guys will get into a cage and pound the hell out of each other. It's especially important to release our UFC 81 predictions now since the event is only two weeks away. Taking place on Saturday, Feb. 2, UFC 81, which has been dubbed "Breaking Point," will be an excellent warm up for the Super Bowl the following day.

UFC 80 Predictions and Betting Odds
by T.O. Whenham - 01/10/2008
It seems hard to believe, because we just got done with UFC 79, but UFC 80 is just around the corner. The painfully lame nickname for this event is Rapid Fire. This gathering doesn't have any particular high-profile appeal, and is definitely more for the hardcore fans than the general public, but there is still some intrigue to be found in the card. Odds for three fights, which will take place at Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle, England on Saturday, Jan. 19 starting at 3:00 p.m. EST, are posted at Bodog. Here's a preview:

UFC Ultimate Fighter 6 Predictions
by Jef Latimer, the MMA Maniac - 11/29/2007
On Saturday the sixth season of "The Ultimate Fighter" will come to an end in the Octagon on Spike TV. During the taping of the popular show, 16 welterweights matched up tournament style to determine the finalists for the show's finale. The under-card will consist of fighters knocked off early in the show. The finalists will square off for the coveted title of Ultimate Fighter, along with a lucrative contract for several future bouts in the UFC. Unfortunately for us the fans, the show's contestants are contractually obligated to remain silent as to whom exactly those finalists will be, thereby eliminating any prospect of jumping on some upsets in the online betting realm. But, that doesn't mean there isn't any action to be had. UFC president Dana White knows this fight game and has put together a beauty of a main event.
