2026 Kentucky Derby Post Positions Analysis and Expert Handicapping

The Kentucky Derby will always be decadent and depraved.
And this year’s version, the 152nd, will once again serve itself up as a perfect cocktail of hypocrisy, delusion, and dissonance within our crumbling American experiment. The Derby sells refinement – mint juleps, big hats, Southern charm. But the reality is aristocratic cosplay and a joke that is definitely on The Masses.
The Derby is a cesspool of demons and dipshit posers in $1,200 outfits that they paid for on a credit card with 22 percent interest, method acting as old money. They are surrounded by their women, who hope a champagne aesthetic will gloss over their tailgate energy as they desperately search for a simulacratic social media moment.
The illusion is the outfit for this crowd.
They’ll be dressing like it’s 1927 and acting like it’s spring break in 1985. By post time the outfits will be wilted and the filters working overtime. The men dribbling julep puke out of the corner of their mouths. And mere minutes after the winner is crowned, the reality will hit this doomed group; by Monday they will be back to running their own race against the algorithm.
In the meantime, the real villains will float freely among this orgy of opulence. They are the ones who can afford multi-million-dollar horses to use as trinkets and playthings. The affluence peddlers and access fiends that roam and float through box seats, hidden by a haze of class and privilege. Destined to be The Real Winners on race day.
So with that in mind, why not find some fun hidden in the horror, right? Maybe one hand wielding a heavy glass filled with ice, bourbon and cynicism. The other stuffed with a handful of crinkled tickets and Benjamins. Let’s lean into the skid here and dive into the debauchery as we accept that no one is coming to save us.
Saturday, May 2 will feature the 152nd consecutive Kentucky Derby. The Derby, along with Friday’s Kentucky Oaks race, are the oldest continuously held major sporting events in the United States.
The race will commence at 6:57 p.m. on Saturday, May 2 at Churchill Downs and can be watched on NBC. For the third straight year there will be a $5 million purse for the race.
The field for this year’s race was established after the post draw on Saturday, April 25. The horses were randomly assigned – think of the NBA draft lottery, but with every horse having an equal shot at each position – and the results will be staid unless someone withdraws before the race.
This year will again feature a full 20-horse field. If any horse is scratched or removed for any reason, there are four potential replacements that could enter the field: Great White, Ocelli, Robusta and Corona de Oro.
Four years ago, alternate Rich Strike actually won the Derby as an 80-to-1 longshot after being added to the field late. That was the second-biggest upset in Derby history, behind Donerail’s 91-to-1 victory in the 1913 Derby.
The post draw is an crucial feature of the annual “Run For The Roses”. Post position has had a dramatic impact on the results and shaping the odds over the years.
For instance, horses in the No. 1 and No. 2 spots often get squeezed against the rail and caught in early traffic. As a result, the last horse to win the Derby from the No. 1 post was Ferdinand at 18-1 back in 1986.
This year’s early favorite, Renegade, drew post No. 1 and will try to snap that 40-year losing streak for the first slot.
Conversely, horses posted No. 16 and wider get to avoid the early race crush but will be forced to run a longer race. For instance, no horse has ever won the Kentucky Derby from the No. 17 post.

Last year’s winner, Sovereignty, won from the No. 18 post at 5-to-1. Sovereignty became just the 14th horse in the 151-year history of the Derby to win the race from a post No. 15 or wider. He was just the ninth horse to do it from No. 17 or wider.
Winners from the wide posts is a relatively recent phenomena. Eight of the last 15 winners have started from post No. 16 or wider. It has become much more common for horse to start wide, avoid the traffic at the rail, and win on the stretch despite covering an overall longer length in the race.
