2026 Kentucky Derby Predictions and Recommended $100 Wager

The Kentucky Derby is the most-watched horse race of the year, and the 152nd Run of the Roses looks to be as fascinating as ever. What is often called ‘The most exciting two minutes in sports’, it doesn’t get much better than the 1 and 1/4 mile race at Churchill Downs. Last year’s win by Sovereignty at 5-1 odds was impressive, and this year looks to be one of the most wide-open fields the race has ever seen.
The outright favorite is Renegade at 5-1 odds, which clearly shows how flat this field is. By the time the race begins, there will likely be a horse with shorter odds, but as of Friday morning, we have six horses between 5-1 and 9-1 odds. This is unheard of in the modern era of Kentucky Derby racing, making it one of the best opportunities to bet on the Derby. While anyone could emerge victorious, there are four horses that stand out as mispriced based on the morning lines. These odds could always shift, but as of now, this is the most effective way to spread a $100 wager on the Kentucky Derby.

Renegade (5-1)
I can agree that Renegade deserves to be the favorite, but what I can’t agree on is the fact that he is still all the way up at 5-1 odds. He stormed to victory in the Arkansas Derby leading up to this race, and comes from a long bloodline of success. He also won his previous prep race, and is in great form with the Derby now days away.
Trainer Todd Pletcher is known for getting his horses ready early in the season but can be known for peaking too early before the American Classic races. However, he has shown restraint and not over-raced Renegade, putting him in pole position to claim Pletcher’s third Kentucky Derby victory. That is especially important for a horse like Renegade, who relies on keeping a steady pace rather than early or late-race moves. With a crowded 20-horse field that should feature a tight front pack, Renegade is exactly the type of horse that can thrive. On his back sits Irad Ortiz Jr, who has been here before. He doesn’t have any Kentucky Derby wins yet, but has found success on two occasions in the Preakness Stakes. This is his ninth start at the Derby, but he has never ridden a horse with as high expectations as Renegade. These odds could certainly move before the race begins, but there is no denying value at this price with Renegade.

The Puma: 8-1
Prep race success is a huge indicator of Derby success, with more than half of the Kentucky Derby winners having won one of the ‘Super Six’ prep races. The Puma doesn’t fall into that category, as he finished second behind Commandment at the Florida Derby, but he is still a true top contender. He only lost to Commandement by a nose, who is also a top favorite in the Kentucky Derby, and The Puma did win the Tampa Bay Derby three weeks prior. His speed rating topped out at 97, which is quite quick for this stage of the season. While his stamina remains a concern, Javier Castellano is a reliable jockey who knows how to manage raw talent on the race track. We saw Castellano and trainer Gustavo Delgado team up to win the Kentucky Derby with Mage in 2023, and we will be hoping for an equally exciting result in 2026.
On the track, we will look for The Puma to navigate a crowded field and avoid getting caught in an early speed trap at the front of the pack. He has a favorable post position at number 9, and is known for his adaptability in the early stages. The Puma has flown under the radar due to the lack of first-place finishes, but he has been right there with the best of the best, and is certainly the strongest non-prep race winner in the field.
Estimated Percent to Win: 20%
Emerging Market: 12-1
Getting 12-1 odds on one of the most legendary trainers teaming up with one of the most decorated jockeys, is never a bad idea. Trainer Chad Brown has raised a true contender in Emerging Market, who looks to be one of his best pedigrees yet. Brown has yet to find success in the Kentucky Derby, but has finished in the top five in trainer earnings every year since 2012, and claimed the top spot in four consecutive years from 2016 to 2019. On his back sits Flavien Prat. Prat has been a top-ten jockey for the last decade, and already has wins in both the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. The 33-year-old already holds numerous records, including being the only jockey to ride seven winners in the same day at a New York racetrack. Prat has a strong connection with trainer Brown, and the duo will get the most out of Emerging Market on Saturday.
As for the horse, Emerging Market has shown a nice blend of speed and stamina, and is one of the most well-rounded horses in the field. He won the Louisiana Derby before this race, but that was six weeks ago, and it wasn’t a particularly deep field. However, his speed ratings have been slowly climbing throughout his career, and he has shown the ability to remain calm in the storm so far. There are plenty of arguments to be made that Emerging Market deserves to be among the cluster of favorites, making a potential 12-1 price tag all the more appealing.

Albus (50-1)
To wrap things up, it feels disrespectful to overlook Albus with odds like these. Albus won one of the six major prep races for this event, and while the other winners are near the top of the list, he has been forgotten at the bottom of the contenders. He is a relatively inexperienced horse compared to his competitors, with only a pair of lifetime wins, but one of those came on the big stage. Right to Party had 26-1 odds before he was scratched, and Oceli also has 50-1 odds, despite the fact that both horses finished behind Albus in that race. In terms of training, Albus is in good hands as Riley Mott, son of legendary trainer Bill Mott, is in charge of Albus. Riley Mott is making his Kentucky Derby debut, but he has a strong steed in Albus to lean on. He may not have the straight-line speed like the other top contenders, but Albus thrives in longer races and finished inside the top-10 in Kentucky Derby qualifying. A wide-open race like this one could see a fast pace early, which would play right into Albus’ hands as he looks to close the gap late. You aren’t going to find a live underdog with odds like these very often, and sprinkling on Albus to win, place, and show are all worthy investments.
