NCAA Football Predictions: Week 6 Opening Line Report and Picks

Even with the weather finally turning, the coaching carousel never really waits for November. It usually starts spinning in the first couple of weeks of October, right when the season stops being theoretical, and the losses start to pile up. Nobody lost a head-coaching job this past weekend, which is almost a surprise given how these things go, but we did get one of the weirder staff blowups I can remember. Colorado State was getting run off the field at Oregon State, down big in what finished 56-26, and Jim Mora Jr. decided he had seen enough of the defense. He took the play sheet away from defensive coordinator Tyson Summers in the middle of the game. Summers didn't stick around to hash it out on the sideline. He quit and walked out of the stadium. Not a postgame resignation, not a Monday firing. Gone before the final whistle.
The Heisman race has already gone sideways, too. Most years by now you can narrow it to two or three quarterbacks putting up video-game numbers for a playoff contender. This one isn't that. Ohio State junior receiver Jeremiah Smith is the clear favorite to win the thing in December, and it isn't particularly close in the betting market. That almost never happens. Only five non-quarterbacks have taken the award in the last 26 years, and three of those guys played at Alabama, which tells you how rare it is for a skill player to hold the favorite's spot this deep into the fall. If you haven't caught Smith yet, put on a Buckeyes game. He doesn't just get open. He takes over stretches of the game the way the great ones do. I don't think there's been a college receiver like him since Randy Moss at Marshall.
Last weekend, we got off to a great start as the aforementioned Crimson Tide cashed our 5-unit bet as they dismantled Mississippi State 56-23 as 5.5-point road favorites. Unfortunately, the other two plays, which were both 3-units, went up in smoke. That brings our cumulative record to 6-9 and minus 10 units.

GAMES
4-unit San Jose State -6.5 (-110) vs. Wyoming, CEFCU Stadium (Friday, Oct. 9th, 9:00 p.m. ET)
This is a home favorite against an offense that has not functioned. Wyoming is 131st in the country at 295 yards a game, 130th in turnover margin at -6, and scores on only 75% of its red-zone trips. That is the whole case. San Jose State does not need to be explosive to cover 6.5. Luke Weaver has 1,278 yards and 11 touchdowns, Jabari Bates has 487 on the ground, and the Spartans are 3-2 and 1-0 in the Mountain West after grinding out a 20-16 win at Hawaii. The 10-26 home loss to Fresno State is the scar, and 22.6 points a game is why this is a touchdown number instead of a double-digit one. Wyoming is also 1-4 against the spread. On a Friday night in San Jose, field position and a couple of Cowboy giveaways should be enough.
PICK: San Jose State -6.5
3-unit Oklahoma State -9.5 (-110) vs. UCF, Boone Pickens Stadium (Saturday, Oct. 10th, 12:00 p.m. ET)
Noon in Stillwater is a different bet than a night road play. No. 18 Oklahoma State is 3-1, scoring about 37 a game and allowing under 20, with Drew Mestemaker already at 1,271 yards and 11 touchdowns and Caleb Hawkins at 441 rushing yards. A 31-22 type of game is the projection, which lands on the number rather than well past it, so the stake stays at 3. UCF is 4-1 against the spread and allows 17.6 points, and Duke Watson can keep the Knights in it if the run game works. Keyone Jenkins has only 541 passing yards, though, and that is a thin passing profile for a road underdog that needs to trade scores. Oklahoma State is 2-0 against the spread at home. If the Cowboys win the down-and-distance battle, the second half is where 9.5 gets covered.
PICK: Oklahoma State -9.5.
4-unit James Madison -7.5 (-110) at Georgia Southern, Allen E. Paulson Stadium (Saturday, Oct. 10th, 7:30 p.m. ET)
The series is the tell. James Madison leads it 9-3, and the last meeting was a 35-10 win in heavy rain: 331 rushing yards, seven sacks, Georgia Southern held to 27 yards on the ground, third down at 8-for-13 against 4-for-14. The Dukes also won the last two trips to Statesboro, 28-14 in 2024 and 45-38 in 2022. This year's roster fits the same script. George Pettaway has 497 yards and six touchdowns at 6.7 yards per carry, Nick Herman has 260 and three scores, and James Madison is 23rd nationally both rushing the ball (221.4 a game) and stopping the run (98.0 allowed). Georgia Southern is at 120 rushing yards a game and 24.8 points, against a defense allowing 13.2. The Eagles hold the ball longer, 31:42 to 27:22, without turning that into points. Rain is in the forecast again, and the number has already dropped from -10 to -7.5. That is the buy.
