The grand spectacle of hats and unique foods will garner plenty of media attention, but at the end of the day, it is still a single-horse race.

It can be easy to stray away from winning strategies at the Kentucky Derby, similar to how inexperienced sports bettors can get carried away at the Super Bowl. The 20-horse field creates countless opportunities for exacta or trifecta bets (more on that later) and will be the most-watched horse race of 2026. Before we get into potential strategies for the Kentucky Derby, you must first fully understand how horse racing odds work. These odds will be automatically adjusted as money pours in on some horses over the others, but rarely shift too much in one direction or the other without major news having been released.

There are a variety of bets you can make on the Kentucky Derby. Of course, you can make bets on which horse will win the race, but there are far more betting options than just the winner.

Straight Bets:
To Win: This is the backbone of horse racing. Your chosen horse must win the race, end of story. This is the most profitable straight bet you can make in any race, and even more so with a 20-horse field running at the Kentucky Derby. It doesn’t matter if your horse loses by a hair or comes dead last, any non-win is graded as a loser.

To Place: This wager is on whether or not your chosen horse will finish first or second. It doesn't matter if they win or come second, the payout remains the same.

To Show: This wager is on whether or not your chosen horse will finish first, second, or third. This wager offers the lowest odds of any straight bet, as the ‘To Show’ wagers will need to be split among all three podium finishers. Just like ‘To Place,' each spot in the top three receives the same adjusted payout.

Multi-Horse Bets:

Multi-horse bets can be compared to same-game parlays in major North American sports.
Exacta: An exacta bet is on which horse will finish first and which horse will finish second, in the exact order.

Box Exacta: A box exacta bet lets you cover your bases, as you are picking which two horses finish first and second, regardless of the order.

Trifecta: A trifecta bet is on which horse will finish first, second, and third in the right order.

Box Trifecta: A box trifecta is where you must pick which three horses finish in the top three, in any order.
Superfecta: A superfecta is the hardest bet to win, as you need to pick which horse finishes first, second, third, and fourth in the right order. This will offer a massive payout, but should be seen as nothing more than a lottery ticket.
Box Superfecta: A box superfecta is where you select which horses will finish in the top four, regardless of the order.

Where to Bet on the Kentucky Derby?

There are several ways you can bet on the Kentucky Derby. The easiest way is by heading to Churchill Downs, where you can make in-person wagers. However, that will not be possible for many prospective bettors, as you can also make bets at any local racetrack on the day of the Derby or in the days leading up to the event.

Online sports betting has taken over, but many of the major online sportsbooks don’t offer odds on the Kentucky Derby. The pari-mutuel odds system isn’t easily integrated, and even then, they are unlikely to offer any betting options until the day of the event. A legendary superfecta payoff would be nice, but the reality is that you will end up with nothing a majority of the time. By selecting to win, show, and place bets instead, you have a much better chance of making this weekend at Churchill Downs a profitable one. You can have some fun with some very small multi-horse bets, but it is important to remember they are nothing more than lottery tickets in an event of this magnitude.

Don’t Chase Longshots:
There is no shortage of longshots in the 20-horse field, but don’t get tempted into sprinkling your bankroll across several underdogs with the hope of a miracle. Nearly 1/3 of the previous Kentucky Derbies have been won by the outright favorite, with 2/3 of the Derbies won by a top-three horse on the closing odds. Instead, if there is a long shot you like, it is better to take them to place or to show instead. You won’t get as long odds, but a 40-1 horse to finish in the top three will still pay around 10-1 depending on the final totals. The Kentucky Derby is almost always won by a horse in the top five going into the race, and even in the occasional year with a big underdog, there were another dozen underdogs that fell short the very same year and paid out nothing.
