With four other playoff caliber teams ahead of the Tampa Bay Rays in the AL East, all eyes are on the future for the small market team. There is no bigger name for Tampa Bay than Shane McClanahan, who will look to stay healthy and return to dominance.

Summary of Last Season
Last season was a tough one for the Tamp Bay Rays, and a long summer for their fans. They went just 77-85, going just 22-29 in one-run games. Despite falling eight games under .500, they somehow managed to post a +31-run differential. They were the only team to not reach the 80-win mark but still have a positive run differential. Unfortunately, only the wins and losses matter, and they finished 17 games out of first place in the division, which was good enough for a fourth-place finish in the AL East.
The lineup wasn’t the worst in the league. They ranked 15th in runs, ninth in hits, 27th in doubles, 16th in homeruns, and they led the league in stolen bases. Junior Caminero led the team with a 4.5 WAR. He finished the year with 45 homeruns, 110 RBIs, seven stolen bases, and a .846 OPS. Yandy Diaz and Jonathan Aranda finished in a tie for second place on the team with a 3.4 WAR. Diaz finished with 25 homeruns, a .300 AVG, 83 RBIs, and a .848 OPS. Aranda hit .316 while adding a .883 OPS. Chandler Simpson led the team with 44 stolen bases, while Brandon Lowe finished second on the team with 31 homeruns. Jake Mangum, Jose Caballero, and Josh Lowe also were active on the base paths with Caballero recording 34 steals, Mangum added 27, and Lowe tallied 18.
The rotation was also very mediocre. They finished 15th in the league with a 3.94 ERA. Their 61 quality starts ranked 11th, while they also ranked sixth in WHIP. Drew Rasmussen led the staff with a 4.5 WAR after recording 150 innings. He finished with a 10-5 record and a 2.76 ERA. Ryan Pepiot and Shane Baz both recorded over 160 innings and combined for a 4.37 ERA and a 2.3 WAR. Pete Fairbanks anchored the bullpen with 27 saves, a 2.83 ERA, while allowing just seven homeruns in 60.1 innings. Garrett Cleavinger was the most reliable reliever in the Tampa Bay bullpen last season. He recorded a 2.35 ERA, tied for the team lead with 21 holds, and managed a 12.0 K/9 ratio.
Key Additions/Losses
At the end of the disappointing season, the Rays watched starter Adrian Houser, Fairbanks, outfielder Stuart Fairchild, reliever Alex Faedo, and outfielder Christopher Morel depart from the team. The team later traded Baz to Baltimore, Brandon Lowe and Mangum to Pittsburgh, and Josh Lowe to the Angels.
As for the additions, they added outfielder Jake Fraley after claiming him off waives, traded for reliver Steven Wilson, signed pitcher Jake Woodford, outfielder Cedric Mullins, pitcher Steven Matz, outfielder Edward Olivares, catcher/first baseman Blake Sabol, reliever Cam Booser, and starter Nick Martinez. The Rays acquired outfielder Victor Mesa Jr. and infielder Gavin Lux.
Prospect Outlook
The Rays farm system is strong and may get even stronger in the later days of the summer as the trade deadline approaches. They currently have the 12th strongest farm system in the league with three players ranked inside the MLB’s Top 100 Prospect Rankings. Their highest rated prospect is shortstop Carson Williams who ranks 63rd. He is likely to earn a regular spot in the lineup this season for Tampa Bay with clear 20/20 potential. Outfielder Theo Gillen ranks 76th in the rankings featuring upside on the base paths. Right-hander Brody Hopkins is the final Rays prospect featured in the rankings, coming in at 85th on the list.
X-Factors
The Front Office- The Rays have Mullins, McClanahan, Rasmussen, Diaz, Matz, and Lux to dangle ahead of the trade deadline. They will have one of youngest rosters in the league and will be able to have an extended tryout for a lot of these prospect level players. While the front office will have to balance upside and on-field production, the front office will have to piece together some nice packages in order to further boost their farm system and future potential. McClanahan will fetch some top prospects while Mullins and Rasmussen can potentially be packaged together for another Top 100-type return. The fans and management system will bet on creativity to get the team back to a playoff level sooner than later.

2026 Tampa Bay Rays Predictions:
As for the futures betting market surrounding this team, there is nothing to get excited about. The Rays are clearly in a rebuilding phase after sending both Lowe’s and Baz to other teams. The emergence of their offseason additions could be huge for this team’s future as they could add more capital for the years to come. While there are a lot of young talent around, there is no legit AL Rookie of the Year candidate, nor is there a legit contender for any other major award. As for the win total, the Rays may be the worst team in the AL this season. Take the under.
