Only one team lost on its home ice on Thursday night in the Stanley Cup Playoffs and that was the Western Conference second-seeded St. Louis Blues, who fell 3-2 in double overtime to No. 7 San Jose in the best game of these playoffs so far. Ironically, the Blues had beaten San Jose all four times, in dominating fashion, during the regular season. But there are no shootout chances in the playoffs. NHL Playoffs Handicapping: Players to Watch
by T.O. Whenham - 4/9/2012
Hockey is the ultimate team game. Even the best players on the team can play only a third of the game, so a team succeeds in the layoffs does it because of their depth and chemistry. From a betting perspective, though, there are some players who are more important to pay attention to than others. These players are key indicators — the types of players that determine how their team is likely to perform. If they are playing well in the playoffs then their teams could perform well also.

NHL Predictions: Pittsburgh in Prime Form for Stanley Cup Trophy
by T.O. Whenham - 3/29/2012
When you write an article you are supposed to build towards your big conclusion. You list arguments to build your case then unveil your big finale. I’m not going to do that in this case. Instead, I’m just going to come out with it — the Pittsburgh Penguins are going to win the Stanley Cup.
Handicapping the NHL Playoff Races
by T.O. Whenham - 3/29/2012
We’re down to the nitty gritty in the NHL playoff hunt. No team has more than six games left, and Colorado has only three. Despite the approaching season finale, though, the bottom end of the playoff picture is wide open. Three teams are hunting for two spots in the East, and six teams are fighting for three berths in the West. Here’s how the two races play out:

NHL Trade Deadline Storylines
by T.O. Whenham - 2/28/2012
This year’s trade deadline in the NHL wasn’t as action-packed or significant as it has been in past years, but there were still 15 deals done in the hours leading up to Monday’s deadline with none more going down in the week before the deadline. You can learn a lot about what teams are thinking and how they feel about their team based on what they do or don’t do on the day.
NHL Handicapping: Detroit One of Strongest Home Bets in Sports
by T.O. Whenham - 2/22/2012
On Nov. 3 the Detroit Red Wings lost 4-1 at home to the Calgary Flames. It was a pretty ugly performance for the hosts. It was also the last time Detroit lost at home. Since then they have won 23 straight home contests. The previous NHL record of 20 home wins in a row was set in 1930 and tied in 1976, so what they are in the midst of is obviously impressive.
