Texas A&M is a sexy sleeper pick heading into the 2019 season. That's what happens when you have a national title-winning coach like Jimbo Fisher at the helm leading a roster full of highly-touted recruits. The Aggies enter the 2019 season No. 11 in the country, and the expectation is that they will compete with Alabama and LSU in the SEC.
Spoiler alert: Texas A&M is one of the most overrated teams in the country heading into the season.
It is ridiculous to think that A&M is one of the best teams in the country. They won nine games last year. But their two best wins were at home in overtime. And those OT wins against Kentucky and LSU (in seven OTs) are the only Top 20 wins that Texas A&M has secured since October of 2016.
Much of A&M's season rests on the arm of quarterback Kellen Mond. The three-year starter took major strides last year. And even though A&M lost its leading rusher and receiver to the NFL, they still have a plethora of weapons to work with. The Aggies averaged 36 points per game last season, and I don't see a steep drop-off this time around.
However, Texas A&M lost its top six tacklers from a pretty mediocre defense. A&M was No. 3 nationally in rushing defense. But they lost three of four starting defensive linemen and have just three returning starters back a back seven that was No. 98 in the country against the pass.
Overall, this is a less experienced team than last season's crew. They have just 11 returning starters and just three senior starters. This is just Fisher's second year in College Station. And while he is slowly turning over this roster with his own recruits, this program isn't there - yet.
On top of that, Texas A&M has one of the most difficult schedules in the country. They have to face Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and LSU, with three of those games on the road. (They get Alabama at home, and the Crimson Tide have a bye the week before.) That is an incredible four games against teams ranked in the preseason Top 6!
Texas A&M is not going to win any of those games.
That means that for the Aggies to clear this number they have to avoid any other upset, letdown, look ahead, and revenge loss on their schedule. They have to beat Ole Miss and Arkansas on the road, and they can't slip up against Auburn or South Carolina at home.
I'm sorry, but A&M isn't nearly as good as people think they are. This is an easy 'under' call for me.
