Week 7 College Football Picks and Odds
by Trevor Whenham - 10/16/2010
It was a frustrating week for these football picks last week - Indiana and Auburn performed close to what I expected, but not quite good enough. That’s two frustrating weeks in a row - luckily we started off very strong. Here’s hoping that our Week 7 college football picks and odds get back on track.
Utah (-20.5) at Wyoming (Saturday, Oct. 16. 6 pm ET) - I’m not sure that I understand this line. Utah has an absolutely ruthless offense - they can pile up the points, and they don’t let their foot off the gas no matter what happens. They are undefeated and plan to stay that way, and they know that only big wins - and a win over TCU - is going to give them any shot at serious national respect. In short, they are going to be out for blood.
Wyoming just isn’t very good. They were totally and utterly overwhelmed by TCU last week - 45-0 - and it’s not like they match up much better against Utah. The only difference is that this game is at Wyoming, but that’s not enough to keep this one close.
The Cowboys get a lot of credit for playing a very tough schedule this year - they have also played Texas and Boise State - but you can’t help but notice that they have been crushed in each of those games.
Simply put, Utah is a very good team, Wyoming definitely isn’t, and the Utes stand a very good chance of winning this one by at least three touchdowns. Heck, They stand a decent chance of winning by five touchdowns. Utah is a very nice bet at this price.
Nevada (-7) at Hawaii (Saturday, Oct. 16, 11:30 pm ET) - It looks like the theme this week is that I like unbeaten mid-majors with potent offenses. Nevada and their pistol offense has been extremely good this year. They have come close to being a contender the last couple of years, but this year they are finally putting it all together.
They have an absolutely massive home game against Boise State for their 11th game, and they know that they can really make some noise if they can stay undefeated until then and then win it. That means that they are going to be very hungry and very focused on this one.
Nevada has struggled traveling to Hawaii in recent years. There are two big differences this time around, though - this is the best Nevada team we have seen, and June Jones is no longer in Hawaii.
Hawaii is getting much more respect than they deserve with this line, but that’s because they have put up some eye-popping offensive numbers - QB Bryant Moniz has passed for 2,245 yards and 18 TDs in just six games.
When you look at the Hawaii football schedule, though, what stands out is that they have beaten up on bad teams and struggled against real competition. They scored okay against USC but still lost badly, and they were totally controlled by a Colorado squad that is far from impressive.
I think Nevada would beat both of those teams, so I am confident in backing them here. They have a more diverse offense, a much better defense, a big edge in special teams, and better coaching. This one is going to be very fun to watch, but Nevada will make a statement.
