In the blink of an eye, a quarter of the college football season is done. If the first full month of games has told us anything, it's that there are no untouchables. Florida just dropped 52 on Ole Miss and jumped 13 spots in the poll. Wisconsin walked into Beaver Stadium and beat Penn State. Wake Forest took down Louisville. Oklahoma State, UCLA, and Kentucky are all ranked. The teams that were supposed to spend September collecting style points spent it answering questions they did not expect to hear until November.

The evening was just as restless. Oregon won at the Coliseum and then spent Sunday talking about a quarterback who did not finish the night. LSU answered Oxford by burying Texas A&M. Texas is still No. 1, and it needed every last snap in Knoxville to stay there. By the time the Sunday poll posted, the top of the board looked familiar, and the middle looked like it had been put through a blender. October does not get the benefit of the doubt. It gets teams that have already been hit in the mouth.

The card went 0-3 last week and dropped 11 units. Indiana beat Northwestern 29-23 and never got near the 21-point number. Texas held on 20-17 at Tennessee and left 4.5 points sitting on the field. Michigan got a taste of its own medicine when Iowa scored as time expired and won 20-19. Four weeks in, the ledger sits at 5-7 and minus 9 units.

October 3rd- Saturday No. 7 Alabama vs. No. 16 Mississippi State (-6/59.5) 12:00 pm ABC

Mississippi State has earned the ranking and the noon window, but it hasn't earned the idea that Alabama suddenly becomes a shaky road favorite. The Tide just hung 49 on South Carolina and still look like the side that wins the line, stacks efficient drives, and settles a game once the early noise fades. State can score enough to keep this from getting quiet, which is why the total sits near 60, and six points on the road is simply the tax for playing a 4‑0 SEC team in Starkville. It's also a number Alabama can cover without needing a runaway. The Bulldogs have to be razor‑clean for all four quarters. The Tide only have to be the more complete team once the scripted series are gone.

PICK: Alabama -6 (5-units)

No. 8 Florida vs. No. 25 Missouri (-4.5/56.5) 3:30 pm ABC

Florida walks into Columbia carrying something Missouri doesn't: a game that already proved its ceiling. That Ole Miss result wasn't a hot streak or a lucky matchup. It was Florida winning collisions, dictating tempo, and turning a ranked opponent sideways for four quarters. Missouri comes in off a loss and still has the profile of a team that needs the game to shrink to stay comfortable. Early downs, pace control, and crowd energy are the Tigers' path to making this a four‑quarter fight. The problem is that Florida doesn't need fireworks to separate. Its offense stays on schedule, its physicality travels, and four and a half becomes a number that rewards the team more capable of sustaining drives instead of surviving them.

No. 5 Ohio State vs. No. 14 Iowa (-14/44.5) 3:30 pm CBS

Ohio State is the better team, but the number asks whether that advantage can stretch to two touchdowns in a place where margins rarely breathe. Iowa comes in undefeated after beating Michigan at the horn, and its style keeps every game on a narrow track built around long fields, slow possessions, and third‑and‑long defense. The total reflects that shape, which means the Buckeyes need Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith to supply enough explosive plays to push past the natural limits of a Kinnick afternoon. Fourteen on the road leans on talent more than tempo, and Iowa's profile through four weeks has been about keeping opponents inside that range rather than chasing upsets. The more likely finish is the one where Ohio State wins, but Iowa keeps the spread honest.
