NCAA Football Predictions: Week 4 Opening Line Report and Picks

Week 3 did not just shuffle the poll. It punctured a few stories that had been traveling on reputation. Kentucky walked into a game it was supposed to lose and sent Texas A&M tumbling out of the Top 10. Ole Miss finished LSU in a building that still felt personal long after the final sack. Oregon had already been embarrassed by Oklahoma State, then spent Friday night erasing Portland State by a number so large it explained nothing. USC needed every last snap to put away a Rutgers team that was supposed to be scenery. Those are not random results. They prove September won't let everyone keep the August version of themselves.
That is why the Week 4 board feels different even before the first Friday kick. Florida, suddenly ranked and rising in "The Swamp", is being asked to host Ole Miss as if last week at Auburn was a statement instead of a shootout. Georgia draws Oklahoma and a chance to look like the complete team the ranking has been advertising. LSU has to come home and face Texas A&M with no emotional cushion left. Oregon and USC get each other in a game that will say more about two imperfect resumes than any FCS demolition did. The teams that still look clean on paper now have to play opponents who have already seen a ranked favorite bleed.
Last week, our card went 1-2. We cashed with Alabama when they pulled away from Florida State and covered the big number after a long weather delay. Texas Tech beat Houston but only by two and left the 8-point spread sitting there. LSU lost outright in Oxford as a short road favorite. That drops the 3-week mark to 5-4 and +2 units.

September 25th- Friday
Northwestern vs. No. 5 Indiana (-21/49.5) 8:00 pm FOX
Bloomington in late September is not a place where a 2-0 visitor gets to play catch-up football for long. Indiana has been efficient enough early that the first 15 scripted plays usually produce a lead, and once that happens the Hoosiers are content to run the ball, win third-and-medium, and make the other sideline chase. Northwestern has shown it can move the chains when the pocket is clean, and the first-down calls stay on schedule. It has not shown it can stay in those situations for four quarters against a defense that lives in the box and a home crowd that treats every three-and-out like a statement. Twenty-one points is a lot of points until you watch how quickly Indiana turns a two-score lead into a clock problem. The total sitting under 50 only reinforces that this is more about field position and hidden yards than a track meet.
PICK: Indiana -21 (4-units)
September 26th- Saturday
No. 1 Texas vs. No. 14 Tennessee (-4.5/56.5) 12:00 pm ABC
Neyland in September is loud enough to matter even when the visitor is sitting at No. 1. Texas has the talent to win this game and the recent memory of having to come from behind against a physical front. Tennessee's offense does not need every throw to be perfect if the tempo stays high and the line gives the quarterback a chance on early downs. The number is small because the home crowd and the Volunteers' ability to create one extra possession feel like they belong in the conversation. Texas can still impose its will if the run game gets going and the defense forces Tennessee into obvious passing situations. Four and a half on the road against a ranked team that has not been asked these questions yet is the market admitting this will not be a coronation. The total in the mid-50s leaves room for both sides to score without requiring a complete defensive collapse.
PICK: Texas -4.5 (4-units)
No. 17 Iowa vs. No. 18 Michigan (-5.5/38.5) 3:30 pm CBS
This is the game the total has already decided will be ugly in the best possible way. Both teams would rather win with field position, third-down stops, and a short field than with explosive plays that invite chaos. Michigan gets the building and a slight edge in the trenches if the game stays on schedule. Iowa has spent three weeks proving it can keep a scoreboard from getting away from it and force the other side to be nearly perfect on every series. Five and a half is the cost of playing in Ann Arbor against a team that does not beat itself. The number is not asking Michigan to look like a finished product. It is asking Iowa to manufacture more than one or two scoring chances against a defense that has been living in the middle of the field. The low total is the tell: whoever wins the hidden yards and the fourth-quarter clock will cover, and that side still looks like the one wearing maize.
PICK: Michigan -5.5 (3-units)
Season Totals: 5-4 (55.6%) up 2-units
