NFL Survivor Pool Picks and Expert Advice: Week 12
by Matt Severance - 11/19/2014
Week 11 no doubt shook up your Survivor Pool a bit. Perhaps you were fortunate enough to have used the Denver Broncos before last week, but they were shocked 22-7 in St. Louis. I did warn you about that, saying the Rams had already upset the Seahawks and 49ers this year and that it was Denver's first dome game of the season. Looked like trap potential, and it surely was.
I also warned against jumping too hard on the Cleveland bandwagon, and indeed the Browns laid their second major egg of the season, losing 23-7 at home to Houston. Didn't see a 16-point loss coming, however. Also didn't have Atlanta winning in Carolina, Cincinnati winning in New Orleans or Tampa Bay winning in Washington. Just one of those weeks.
Thankfully my Lock of the Week was San Diego, and the Bolts escaped Oakland's upset bid, 13-6. Not quite the effort I was anticipating coming out of a bye for San Diego, but close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades, so I'll take it. My No. 2 pick was Chicago over Minnesota, and the Bears did rally from an early 10-0 hole to win 21-13. I still despise Jay Cutler, however.
The good news is that Week 12 concludes the byes, with Pittsburgh and Carolina the last teams to get a week off.
Lock of the Week
Indianapolis vs. Jacksonville: My only concern here would be that a vast majority of competitors will jump on the Colts, so you may want to play defense. I'm presuming Indy is a safe bet to bounce back from its Week 11 home blowout loss to New England, although the season-ending loss of running back Ahmad Bradshaw (naturally on my fantasy team) definitely hurts. If Andrew Luck throws for 300 yards this week against the Jaguars' No. 26 pass defense it would be his record-tying ninth straight game with 300. Luck had 370 yards and four TDs in a 44-17 win in Jacksonville in Week 3. That was the game the Jags switched to rookie Blake Bortles.
Extremely Confident
Philadelphia vs. Tennessee: The Eagles were destroyed on Sunday in Green Bay, so I expect a nice bounce-back effort against a Titans team coming off a short week and a blown lead in Monday night's home loss to Pittsburgh. Not sure I trust Mark Sanchez enough, however, to make the Eagles my Lock of the Week, although it crossed my mind. The Titans are pretty bad, though, and have lost four straight on the road, never scoring more than 17 points.
San Francisco vs. Washington: The 49ers have won two straight, but I'm not sure they are fixed. They were somewhat lucky to win two weeks ago in New Orleans and only beat the Giants 16-10 last week despite picking off Eli Manning five times. The Redskins seem to be imploding, with Coach Jay Gruden calling out Robert Griffin III this week. Might one of those guys be elsewhere next year? I believe Dan Snyder would dump Gruden after one season. Washington had no right losing by 20 at home to Tampa Bay last week with the Skins coming off a bye.
Chicago vs. Tampa Bay: Some Bears fans -- not me -- are torn this week because they still love former coach Lovie Smith and would rather see Josh McCown as the team's quarterback this season than Cutler (count me in there). Of course, Smith now coaches the Bucs and poached McCown this past offseason. If you think Marc Trestman's seat is hot right now, just wait if Smith comes in and beats the Bears. Both of Tampa's wins are on the road, so that's worrisome because Chicago hasn't been good at home.
New England vs. Detroit: At some point the Patriots are going to play a bad game, because it's nearly impossible to stay at this high of a level for nearly two months straight. How many of you picked up Pats tailback Jonas Gray in your fantasy league this week? The Lions defense should be quite a test for that red-hot New England offense, but once again it's a big road game, so I have little faith in Detroit.
Seattle vs. Arizona: It's a must-win game for the champs if they have any hope of winning the NFC West and getting at least one home playoff game. Seattle would miss the playoffs if the season ended today. How many of you saw that coming? In a way this is a throwaway game for the Cards with such a big lead in the division and two games clear of every other NFC team.
San Diego vs. St. Louis: Let's call this the Los Angeles Bowl. Both teams have been rumored to be moving to the City of Angels, maybe as early as next season. Come on L.A., take the Jaguars! No one in Florida cares about that team. This feels like a major letdown game for St. Louis off last week's big win over Denver.
Denver vs. Miami: The Dolphins are pretty good, but I don't see the Broncos losing for a third time in four games, even with Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman out and perhaps Julius Thomas and Emmanuel Sanders as well.
Equally Unconfident
Green Bay at Minnesota: Aaron Rodgers is now your NFL MVP favorite, but this is the definition of a trap game. The Packers have put up back-to-back 50-point games in home blowouts, but all three losses this season have been on the road. Plus, the Pack have a potential Super Bowl preview next week back at Lambeau against the Patriots. I didn't have the guts to call a flat-out upset here, but it could be close.
Atlanta vs. Cleveland: OK, then, I thought the Falcons would be a playoff contender this year. But then I sprained both ankles -- a la Southern Cal defensive back Josh Shaw -- jumping off the bandwagon when the Falcons were 2-6 following a five-game losing streak. Coach Mike Smith was all but fired. However, out of a bye week Atlanta has won two straight, and if the season ended today would win the NFC South despite a 4-6 record. The Browns surprisingly cut Ben Tate this week, and that offense was terrible last Sunday in the loss to Houston. Brian Hoyer set a team record with 30 incompletions. Hoyer has been a pleasant surprise to be sure but has put up a few horrible games this season. Paging Johnny Football? Not quite yet. The Browns do get back star receiver Josh Gordon off suspension.
Cincinnati at Houston: Is there any team more schizophrenic than Cincinnati? Blowout losses to the Patriots, Colts and Browns but a sweep of Baltimore and last week's very impressive 27-10 victory in New Orleans. I have no idea which team shows up here. Meanwhile, Houston's Ryan Mallett looked pretty solid in his first NFL start last week, including a 2-yard TD pass to the incomparable J.J. Watt, who has more touchdowns this season than several of my skill position fantasy players. Sigh.
Dallas at N.Y. Giants: This is a rivalry game, and I hate to go against the home team, but Eli Manning is regressing, and the Giants seem to have quit under lame-duck Coach Tom Coughlin. Dallas also comes in off the bye week.
New Orleans vs. Baltimore (Monday): Here I thought the Saints would take control of the NFC South with a three-game homestand. Alas, they lost the first two. In addition, New Orleans' point total has gone down each of the past four three weeks, from 44 in a Week 8 win vs. Green Bay to just 10 in last Sunday's loss to Cincinnati. That said, the Ravens haven't been a good road team.
Upset of the Week
Oakland vs. Kansas City (Thursday): You know how members of the 1972 Dolphins supposedly crack a bottle of champagne when the last unbeaten team loses each year? Will players from the 2008 Lions do the same when the final winless team gets a victory? Or do they want to be joined in 0-16 infamy? Everything points to a potential close game here. Rivalry game. Short week, which usually favors the home team. Chiefs playing out of their minds so perhaps due a bit of a stinker. And a huge one for K.C. next week against Denver.
Yawn!
Buffalo vs. N.Y. Jets: Kyle Orton vs. Michael Vick. Exciting! I feel sorry for football fans living in the state of New York. Well, I guess I need to say New Jersey, too, since that's where the Jets and Giants play. About the only thing that would make this game interesting is if the teams were playing in a snowstorm like the one that hit Buffalo on Tuesday and Wednesday and was expected to dump seven feet(!) of the white stuff. Alas, that's not in the forecast for Sunday.
