On Monday night, Atlanta fell to the Chicago Bulls by a 128-123 scoreline. The Hawks' offense was firing on all cylinders, but their defense fell apart when it mattered most. Atlanta allowed 71 points in the second half after failing to capitalize on their early 13-point lead. Trae Young had his best game of the season, scoring 21 points while posting an incredible 17 assists. Kristaps Porzingis also had a nice game on the offensive end, scoring 27 points, his most in a Hawks uniform. However, the Hawks were outhustled on the glass by a 51-36 margin, and those extra possessions allowed Chicago to sneak away with the victory. The Bulls had eight players in double digits on Monday, scoring a season-high 128 points to stay undefeated.

From a betting perspective, we went 1-1. The two teams chose to take the night off on the defensive end, going over the 241.5 point total we expected them to fall short of. We stayed even with a nice plus-money victory on the Bulls moneyline at +105 odds, in what was a back-and-forth contest until the final buzzer.
Tonight, the Atlanta Hawks (1-3) head to New York to take on the winless Brooklyn Nets (0-4). It may seem rash to call any game a must-win when there are still 77 more to go after tonight, but the Hawks are truly desperate for a victory. It was always going to be tough to start on the right foot, given their fresh roster after a flurry of offseason moves, but alarming trends are developing in Atlanta nevertheless. The Hawks aren’t hustling on the glass, and they aren’t staying active on defense; those traits are simply hard to teach. Trae Young’s defense has improved since the early stages of his career, but he is still a liability due to effort rather than a lack of talent. He will have an easy matchup tonight as Dyson Daniels will be responsible for slowing down Cam Thomas, and will only need to mitigate the impact of Terrance Mann from behind the arc. Speaking of Daniels, his lack of production on the offensive end has really hurt the Hawks. His defensive play is necessary given Young’s shortcomings, but it feels as though the Hawks are playing with four players on the offensive end. Daniels went 1/8 from the field in Chicago while adding on just two assists. He has scored 5 PPG so far this season, with a 32% field goal percentage. There will always be random stats that can be pulled in the early stage of the NBA season, but the reality is that Daniels looks like a shadow of what he was on both ends of the court last season.
In tonight’s matchup, the Hawks will need to avoid overlooking their opponents. It may be easy to see the 0-4 Nets as an easy win, but Brooklyn is still full of NBA talents that are fighting for their careers. Cam Thomas had a 40-point explosion against the Spurs on Sunday, but followed that up with a muted 9-point outing against the Rockets the following day. Thomas is the definition of a microwave scorer, as he rarely passes the ball and instead opts for contested shots over sharing the rock. Daniels will be tasked with shutting him down tonight, and if he can play effective defense, Brooklyn doesn’t have too many other options on offense. Michael Porter Jr. needs playmakers around him to succeed, and Nic Claxton can’t generate his own offense outside of the paint. This was always going to be a bad year for the tanking Nets, and the Hawks must take care of business in a very winnable matchup.
It’s still early, but one player who has stepped up for the Hawks has been Onyeka Okongwu. Okongwu started two games when Porzingis was down with the flu, and will be a very effective piece coming off the bench. His PPG, rebounds, and assists have climbed each of the previous five seasons in Atlanta, and he is well on his way to continuing that trend this year. His flexibility on defense is exactly what the Hawks have been looking for, and it appears he is the long-term Clint Capela replacement over the aging Porzingis. It is rare to find NBA centers who can effectively protect the paint, but also won’t get caught on an island in drop coverage. Okongwu is developing nicely on both ends of the court, and he is primed for a big game tonight in Brooklyn.
For the first bet of the night, we will be taking Okongwu to go over 1.5 assists at +100 odds. Okongwu has gone over this total in three straight games, and this could be the last time we get underdog odds on the 1.5 line. Porzingis loves to be a part of the offense, and that style of play has bled into Okongwu’s game. The 24-year-old had his offensive game hindered by the rigidity of Capela in the past, but is now seen under a new light since Porzingis has joined the roster. Okongwu is now being given the ball in dribble handoffs and will also confidently swing the ball around the horn to find the open man. He is consistently getting 30 minutes a night, and that will give him ample opportunities to reach this total.
For the second bet of the night, we will be taking both the Hawks' moneyline and spread. The -300 pricetag is tough to swallow, but I find it next to impossible to imagine Atlanta handing the Nets their first win of the year. The Hawks are rested, motivated, and healthy for tonight’s game. Brooklyn will also be eager to win, but the Hawks' superior offensive quality will allow them to prevail. The -7.5 point spread offers a bigger payout, so we will split our wager between the moneyline and spread in a way where we break even on a Hawks win, and rake in 2 units if they also get the cover.
