NBA Betting Trends Analysis and Expert Handicapping

We’re only two weeks into the NBA season, but there’s already plenty to take in. With key injuries, sleeper teams racking up wins, and projected powerhouses struggling to find their rhythm, NBA betting has gotten a lot more complicated, fast.
But don’t worry, that’s why I’m here—to help spot some key trends and things to watch for, so your next bet puts you back in the green. Let’s not waste any time and dive right into the trends you need to watch going forward.
Doc’s Sports offers NBA picks for every game on our NBA predictions page.
Timberwolves Missing Edwards Spark
The Minnesota Timberwolves have found themselves in a position they didn’t want to be in so early in the season—without Anthony Edwards on the floor. With Edwards sidelined, they’re missing their top scorer and playmaker, plus an additional 25 points per game. Why am I saying this?
Since Edwards went down, the Wolves are 1-4 against the spread and have been inconsistent on both ends of the floor. While Minnesota has a lineup capable of big games, they’re just not the same without Edwards, and the stats don’t lie. With Edwards expected to be out for at least another week, fading the Wolves against the spread is the smartest move for your NBA betting.
Atlanta Hawks Without Trae Young
Covering the spread hasn’t exactly been a strong suit for the Atlanta Hawks this season, and it doesn’t look much prettier for the foreseeable future with PG Trae Young sidelined by a sprained MCL. Look, if you know your NBA, you know how valuable Young is to this offense. Sure, Jalen Johnson and a few role players can take on some of the scoring load, but you can’t win games without a true creator—and that’s what Young is for this team.
With Atlanta trying to regroup without their franchise player, who brings 17 points and 7.3 assists a night, things are about to get even bumpier. Factor in that the Hawks are already staring down the barrel of an 0-2 record against the spread at home. And playing without Young until the end of November, your best bet is to keep an eye on when the Hawks are playing at home and fade them.
Take Over on Chicago Bulls
If there’s any team making a statement so far this season, it’s the Chicago Bulls. With a 5-1 record and averaging almost 122 points a game, it’s clear this is a team to back on the over in their games.
What’s really working for them is having a balanced mix of veteran talent and young and upcoming players. Six guys are averaging double digits, and they’re now 3-1 in games hitting the over when playing at home. It’s a formula that’s paying off right now.
I’m not saying they’ll keep this pace all season, but for now? They’re only going to get better. I’m not sure there’s a defense that can put the brakes on their offense—especially when they’re playing at the United Center.
Fade Grizzlies ATS With 1 Day Off
You might not think that just one day off would mess with a team's play, but time and time again, we see it. One game, a team looks like they’re doing everything right, and the next, they can’t hit a free throw to save their lives. Right now, that team is the Memphis Grizzlies.
With multiple players sidelined until mid-November and others out until January, the Grizzlies are in serious need of help—help they’re not getting, especially after only one day off. Through five games, Memphis is 0-5 against the spread when coming off a day of rest, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon. They’re running a thin roster as it is, and their defense is one of the league’s worst—giving up 121.3 points per game.
Take advantage of this banged-up Grizzlies for the next couple of weeks when they’ve had a day off and fade them against the spread. Trust me, the payoff will be worth it.
