The Boston Celtics are now three years removed from their 2024 championship and failed to win a playoff series last year for the first time since 2021. Losing Jayson Tatum for the first chunk of the season dimmed their title hopes, but they surpassed expectations and went into the playoffs as a serious threat. 

Heading into the new season, management decided it was time for a change after nine seasons with Tatum and Jaylen Brown leading the charge. Boston traded Brown to the 76ers for draft capital and Paul George, as they look to jump right back into contention heading into the new season. Will the offseason gamble pay off, or will Boston slide down the standings after fueling an Eastern Conference foe?

Boston Celtics Offseason Recap

The Boston Celtics made one of the biggest moves of the offseason by trading Jaylen Brown to the Philadelphia 76ers for Paul George, two first-round picks, and two second-round picks. The duo of Brown and Tatum has been the backbone of this franchise for nearly a decade, and Boston will look very different without Brown on the outside. Many teams would have crumbled if their star player tore his Achilles the year before, but not the Celtics as Brown had the best year of his career with Tatum largely on the sidelines. He finished sixth in MVP voting after career highs in PPG (28.7), rebounds (6.9), and assists (5.1). He will not be an easy man to replace, and Paul George has big shoes to fill as he heads to Boston.
George is in the twilight of his career after having a very up-and-down 16-year career in the league. He looked to be the next star after his time in Indiana and Oklahoma City, but never lived up to expectations with the Clippers and 76ers. Injuries certainly played a role in his demise, but he now has a chance to get his career back on track in Boston. His defensive work rate has never slowed, and if he can continue to shoot the three-ball well, he will find himself right alongside Tatum as the top option on this team.

While the Brown-George trade dominated Boston headlines, it was not the only move they made this offseason. The Celtics lost Nikola Vucevic in free agency, but got a very respectable replacement in Mitchell Robinson to replace him. Robinson was instrumental in the Knicks championship run, providing incredible defense to an otherwise offensive unit. His dreadful free throws and lack of offense are offset by his defending, shot blocking, and rebounding in the paint, and will instantly slot in nicely on this roster. The Celtics also picked up Mike Conley to give them depth at guard, which is the perfect veteran addition to help grow this team both on and off the court. 

2026 Boston Celtics Season Expectations

There is no time for rebuilding in Boston. The Celtics have prioritized their future by selling Brown for primarily draft capital, but they still are rolling out a very strong roster this season. Tatum is one of the best in the league at creating his own offense, as he can score at all three levels but also isn’t afraid to pass the ball if the defense overcommits. His ability to finish in tight while maintaining a delicate touch on the outside is a rare combination, and he will be responsible for the bigtime shots this season. While losing Brown hurts, Tatum was starting to get overshadowed by his longtime teammate, and will now have the spotlight firmly fixed on his performances, for better or for worse.

One man that will need to deliver this year is Derrick White. White has been quietly turning into a reliable guard on both ends of the floor, and the Celtics will need that development to continue at 32 years old. Without Brown shooting threes, White will have an even larger share of the rock and will not hesitate to fire it up. He only shot 32.7% from deep last season, his lowest clip in half a decade, but contributed all over the offensive end of the floor. 

Last season, Boston had the fourth-best defensive rating in the league, and it wasn’t thanks to Brown or Vucevic. White, Tatum, Neemias Queta, and Baylor Scheierman are all elite defenders at their respective positions, and are all back in Boston for another season. The Celtics may have lost some offensive firepower in the offseason, but if their defense is still elite, and George can turn back the clock, Boston will be right back among the Eastern Conference contenders. 

2026 Boston Celtics Schedule Breakdown

The Celtics and Pistons square off in Detroit in the first game of the 2026-27 NBA season, before Boston goes home for four straight at TD Garden. They then hit the road with 13 of their next 16 away from home, which will give us an early measuring stick of where this team is at without Brown. They have a lengthy homestand through Christmas with seven straight at home including a 2:30 PM EST tip-off against the Miami Heat on Christmas Day. Looking at the tail end of the season, Boston has seven of their final nine on the road, which could be crucial as they potentially jockey for playoff seeding. All-in-all, the Celtics have several long homestands and lengthy road trips, which could result in big swings for Boston.

2026 Boston Celtics Odds

The Boston Celtics are expected to be right near the top of the Eastern Conference with a win total of 50.5 this season. That puts them right behind the Knicks who are at 51.5 wins, and level with the 76ers at the top of the East. In terms of a playoff berth, the Celtics have -750 odds to make the playoffs and +450 odds to miss, with +280 odds to participate in the play-in tournament. Looking further, Boston has +550 odds to win the Eastern Conference with +1400 odds to win the championship. 

In the NBA Cup, Boston comes in as +115 favorites to win East Group C which features the Hawks, Hornets, Wizards, and Bulls. Due to their favorable group stage draw, the Celtics have the shortest NBA Cup odds of any Eastern Conference team with +1100 odds to hoist the trophy. 

2026 Boston Celtics Season Predictions and Best Bets

The Boston Celtics are expected to be right among the contenders in the East, but I am not buying it. Last year, the Celtics had a win total of 43.5, which they easily surpassed with a 56-26 record. Tatum was out, but they were able to lean on their defense with Jaylen Brown anchoring their offense. This time around it is Brown that is no longer in the picture, and I am expecting very different results. Paul George is past his prime, Robinson will only thrive under the right circumstances, and the rest of the Celtics roster is largely unproven. Expecting Boston to pick right back up where they left off is a tall task, and I would much rather take a shot with one of the other contenders.

For the first pick, we will take under 50.5 wins at -110 odds. The fellow Eastern Conference contenders have all grown in strength, and the Celtics will struggle to pick up easy wins on a nightly basis. A team is usually expected to struggle when they lose their best player, but the Celtics are expected to pick up where they left off with George in for Brown. No thanks. The East is loaded with talent, Boston has a very shallow roster in terms of quality, and this will be the first time since 2021 that they finish with under 50 victories. 

For the second bet, we will take a more aggressive approach. I always like chasing plus money with season-long picks, as we can tie up less of our bankroll for an equivalent payout. Instead of looking at an alternative under with a niche site, we will take the Celtics to qualify for the play-in tournament at +280 odds. This would require six other Eastern Conference teams to finish ahead of the Celtics, which I think happens a relatively high percentage of the time. New York, Philadelphia, and Cleveland are all locks, while the Pistons, Raptors, Heat, Magic, Pacers, and Hawks all have a reasonable chance too. We just need six of those nine teams to finish ahead of Boston to cash a +280 prop, which gives us lots of ways to cash these juicy odds.
