The Cleveland Cavaliers have been a consistent finisher near the top of the Eastern Conference standings, but have been unable to turn that regular season success into playoff accolades. They finished in the top four for the fourth consecutive season after going 52-30, but a pair of playoff wins was quickly forgotten when they were swept by the Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals. Cleveland had their deepest playoff run since the LeBron James era, and have elected to run it back with a similar core this year. Will that prove to be the right move? Let’s jump in to find out.

Cleveland Cavaliers Offseason Recap

The Cleveland Cavaliers were relatively quiet in the offseason, looking to lock up their core stars rather than trade for new talent. They signed James Harden to a three-year deal after picking him up at the trade deadline last season, and also extended Donovan Mitchell with a four-year deal. 

The Cavaliers did make one major addition, and that is Peyton Watson from the Denver Nuggets. Cleveland sent Max Strus, Dennis Schroder, cash, and a first round pick to acquire Watson in a five-team trade. Watson gives the Cavaliers a new look on both ends of the floor, as the 24-year-old is coming off the best season of his young career. He put up 14.1 PPG on 49% from the floor and 41% from behind the arc, while chipping in 4.9 rebounds, 2.1 assists, with a steal and a block per game. On defense, Watson is a great switch defender who can realistically guard anyone from the 2-4, with his perimeter shot blocking and contesting being his greatest asset. He will slot in nicely on a Cavaliers team with two excellent defensive big men in Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allen, which will allow him to find himself in his best position more often. There are still concerns about his offensive game and whether or not last year was a flash in the pan or the new Watson, but the Cavaliers got him at a reasonable $88 million for four years. Losing Strus is the biggest downside to this move, but Watson's arrival makes the Cavaliers better both now, and in the long run. 

Cleveland Cavaliers Season Expectations

The Cleveland Cavaliers will once again be expected to finish in a playoff spot, and anything outside a top-four seed would be a disappointment. The Cavaliers have been able to string together consistent regular season success over the last half-decade, and made their big move last year in the Harden-Garland swap. Now all the cards are on the table, and they need to turn regular season success into playoff accolades. 

It starts with Donovan Mitchell. Harden is a microwave scorer, Allen can lock down the paint, while Mobley and Watson are solid two-way starters, but none of them are on the level of Mitchell. If the Cavaliers want to take that next step, it starts with the star. Mitchell had an excellent year last season with 27.9 PPG on 48.3% from the floor with 4.5 rebounds and 5.7 assists, which was good enough to get him an MVP vote last season. His explosive first step allows him to create his own offense, and is a proven high-volume shooter. Whether it is deep behind the arc or driving to the hoop, Mitchell is the guy the Cavaliers want to have the ball when it matters most. He will get enough defensive support from the rest of his starters, but just hasn’t been able to hit the shots when it matters most in the playoffs. Cleveland is a strong defensive team that can run right through the bottom half of the league, and they probably only have one or two more years with this core to make it count. 

2026 Cleveland Cavaliers Schedule Breakdown

The Cleveland Cavaliers open up the season in Philadelphia against LeBron James and the new-look 76ers, which will be a great measuring stick for this team. They then get three straight home games against the Nets, Timberwolves, and Wizards, which means they are set up for at least a 3-1 start. The beautiful thing about the Cavaliers schedule is they don’t have a road trip of more than three games until a four-game East Coast trip in January, and their only other real road trip is a six-game stretch out West in the middle of March. They will be on the East Coast for long stretches, and considering they play eight of their last 11 at home after that West Coast trip, they have the potential to build momentum before a crucial playoff run. 

In the NBA Cup, the Cavaliers have a very difficult group with the 76ers, Knicks, Heat, and Pacers. This will give them a chance to avenge some of their playoff demons early in the season, or it could spell disaster with four very difficult matchups. 

2026 Cleveland Cavaliers Odds

The Cleveland Cavaliers are tied with four other teams at +2500 for the sixth-best NBA championship odds, as it is clear the oddsmakers haven’t given up on this roster. In terms of the regular season, the Cavaliers have a win total of 48.5 with +100 odds on the over, which puts them fifth in the Eastern Conference. While that means a trip to the dreaded play-in tournament is a possibility with +180 odds to participate, they are still firm favorites to play postseason basketball with -450 odds to make the playoffs with +320 odds to fall short. 

Looking at the NBA Cup, the odds are stacked against the Cavaliers. They have +450 odds to win their group, behind the 76ers (+225) and Knicks (+225), with +280 odds to advance to the quarterfinals. Due to their difficult draw, the Cavaliers are all the way down at +3000 to win the NBA Cup. 

2026 Cleveland Cavaliers Season Predictions and Best Bets

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been consistent regular season performers that have been unable to turn that into playoff success. They made their deepest run in a decade with a third-round exit last year, but still didn’t taste any tangible silverware. Looking at the upcoming season, they arguably got better by upgrading Strus to Watson in the starting five, while their young pieces like Evan Mobley had another year to develop. Despite this, their win total sank to 48.5, a line they have cleared in three of the last four seasons. 

For the first bet, we will take Over 48.5 wins at +100 odds. The buzz around the rest of the Eastern Conference is as loud as ever, but the Cavaliers keep finding ways to win regular season games. They finished with 52 wins last season and 64 the year before, making this reduction on their total a hard thing to justify. As long as their core stays healthy, Watson’s addition will allow them to stay near the top of the conference, and clinch another top-four seed. Their -450 playoff odds would be a great parlay piece as it would take something remarkably terrible for them to miss out, but we can’t justify a bet at those odds. 

While we won’t be touching their NBA Cup or championship odds, we will take some plus money on 55+ regular season wins at +300 odds. The Cavaliers have averaged 53.75 wins a season across the last four years, and this is a great price for them to do so again. I always like taking plus money on season-long bets, as we have to lock up less of our bankroll for potentially the same profit. Look for the Cavaliers to quietly do well in the regular season, and we can always sprinkle on some playoff bets down the line at a similar price.
