James Madison football has spent four years at the FBS level punching above its weight. That run now meets its stiffest test. The Dukes enter 2026 as Sun Belt favorites on paper, yet the roster and the sideline look far less certain than the preseason polls suggest. Power conference programs still grab most of the attention, but anyone hunting value should treat this particular Group of Five situation with caution rather than automatic optimism.

How the Last Two Seasons Set Up the Fall

The last two seasons under Bob Chesney tell the story of a program that peaked and then lost its architect. In 2024, JMU was a preseason Group of Five favorite and finished 9-4. Last year the Dukes delivered a 12-1 regular season, won the conference title, and reached the College Football Playoff. They lost to Oregon 51-34 in Eugene. The defense could not stop the Ducks. JMU did outscore Oregon 28-17 after halftime and covered the 20.5-point spread, a late flourish that papered over a lopsided first half. That result was the high-water mark. It also marked the end of the Chesney era.

A Costly Coaching Carousel

The coaching carousel has been costly. Since the move to FBS in 2021, two head coaches have left for Big Ten jobs. Curt Cignetti departed after 2023, took more than 10 players with him to Indiana, and built a national title contender. Chesney followed the same path after 2025, leaving for UCLA after the Bruins finished 3-9. James Madison replaced him with Billy Napier, who was fired in the middle of the 2025 season at Florida after going 22-23 in three and a half years. The hire changed the program's formula. Earlier coaches arrived with recent winning records at their previous stops. Napier was available because he could not win consistently in the SEC. One of the loudest complaints in Gainesville was that he failed to get the most from his players. Motivating a roster in the Sun Belt, with less talent and less NIL support, is a steeper climb.

Napier's earlier work at Louisiana still gets mentioned as a reason for hope. Those four West Division titles are several years old. The sport has changed. Roster movement is faster. Player motivation is harder when the next portal window is always open. New offensive coordinator Cam Aiken and new defensive coordinator Robert Bala must install schemes with limited carryover. The staff itself is almost entirely rebuilt. Transitions of this size usually cost games before they produce them.

A Thin Roster With an Unsettled Line

Napier inherits a thin returning core. Just four starters are back. Cignetti rebuilt Indiana by raiding an already strong JMU roster. Napier did not get the same luxury. Florida's best players stayed in Gainesville. The offensive line is a particular concern. Combined starts among the group total 34, ranking 94th nationally out of 137 teams. That figure is better than Old Dominion's zero, yet it still points to a unit that will need time to develop cohesion. Early-season offenses often stall when the line lacks shared snaps. JMU may spend September figuring out who can block.

The skill positions offer some continuity but not enough to hide the gaps. Wide receiver Braeden Wisloski returns after a modest 2025. Center Zach Greenberg is the lone proven starter on the line. Defensive end Amar Thomas and outside linebacker Gannon Weathersby give the defense a pair of experienced pieces. Running back George Pettaway landed on the Doak Walker watch list and should carry a heavy load. The quarterback job remains unsettled between JC Evans and Camden Coleman. An unresolved competition this late in camp is rarely a sign of strength. The supporting cast is largely new. Reports put portal additions near 40. Many of those players come from FCS, Division II, and Division III programs. That pipeline can produce contributors, but it also increases the odds of growing pains.

A Manageable Schedule and Fragile Expectations

The schedule looks manageable on the surface. JMU opens at home against Liberty on Sept. 5, hosts Wagner, then travels to San Diego State. A road game at Old Dominion on Sept. 26 could decide the East Division early. Home dates against Marshall, Georgia State, Troy, and Coastal Carolina mix with trips to Georgia Southern, App State, Southern Miss, and UConn. Three Thursday games late in the year will test a thin roster. A soft non-conference slate can inflate records and hide problems until conference play tightens.

Vegas set the win total at 8.5 and made JMU the conference favorite. Those numbers assume the program's recent standard survives another complete reset. History at this school shows the drop-off can be modest. History with this hire points the other way. JMU has shown it can cover late against superior talent. That second-half fight against Oregon was real. Whether the same resilience appears in September, with a new coach, a new scheme, and an inexperienced line, is the open question. For now, the safer view is that the Dukes take a step back. Eight or nine wins would still be a solid first year. Anything less would confirm the worry that this particular coaching change was a reach. The standard remains high. The roster that has to meet it is thinner than it looks.
