On Monday night, the Atlanta Hawks got blown out by the Minnesota Timberwolves 138-116. While there are no excuses for that kind of performance, sudden last-minute injuries for Dyson Daniels and Jalen Johnson left the Hawks very shorthanded. Once that was coupled with Kuminga’s injury and Gueye’s ejection, Atlanta never stood a chance of mounting a comeback. It was an especially disappointing game for the Hawks in transition, as they repeatedly let Minnesota get out and run for easy buckets. CJ McCollum’s red-hot start wasn’t enough to keep it close, as the Hawks found themselves down 32 early in the 3rd quarter to set up a lackluster second half. It appears Gueye will avoid a suspension for his altercation with Naz Reid on Monday, which will be crucial, as the Hawks need every healthy body they can get.
From a betting perspective, we went 2-3. We took both the Hawks' spread and moneyline before Johnson’s and Daniels’ injuries were revealed, but did well with our other props. Onyeka Okongwu went 2/4 from deep, cashing over 1.5 threes but falling short of the higher rung on the ladder, while Nickeil Alexander-Walker cashed over 7.5 three-point attempts with a 4/9 stat line from deep.
Tonight, the Atlanta Hawks (26-29) play their final game before the All-Star break, and it couldn’t be more critical. Atlanta takes a trip to Charlotte to take on the Hornets (25-29), as the two sides are neck-and-neck for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Charlotte had their nine-game win streak snapped by the Pistons on Monday night, as they have stormed out of nowhere to get into playoff contention. It was a contentious game in Charlotte on Monday, as the biggest fight of the season broke out. It resulted in four ejections, the benches clearing, and looming suspensions could aid the Hawks' chances at pulling off this upset. Moussa Diabete and Miles Bridges were the Charlotte players ejected, and while no official decision has come in yet regarding their availability for this game, it would be surprising to see either suit up tonight.
The Charlotte offense is very balanced, with Brandon Miller, LaMelo Ball, Kon Knueppel, and Bridges all averaging between 20.4 and 18.2 PPG this season. The Hornets’ ability to stay competitive regardless of who is on the floor has them set up for a bright future, and it is no surprise to see them finally putting things together. They have been able to stay healthy for the first time in a while, and there is real optimism that the Hornets could make the playoffs for the first time in a decade. They have all the scoring aspects covered, too, as Miller can hit the midrange shots, Knueppel can fire it off from deep, Ball can score and playmaker, while Bridges will get physical in the paint. The Hornets defense still has major flaws, but they compensate for their defensive deficiencies on the other end of the floor, which has kept them afloat.
For the Hawks, it is starting to feel like the season is slipping away. A loss to the Hornets would slide the Hawks down to 10th place heading into the All-Star break, six games back of the 6th-place 76ers. There are only 26 regular-season games left after tonight, and time is running out for the Hawks to start stringing wins together. Another murky injury report with Johnson and Daniels questionable could see the Hawks dip deep into their bench tonight, and leave them with little hope of securing a crucial road win. Even if Bridges’ inevitable suspension is announced before tip-off, the Hornets still have the stronger top-end and the deeper bench to lean on.
One aspect where the Hawks must thrive tonight is ball security. Atlanta has the most assists in the league this season, they have the fifth-fewest turnovers, and the Hornets generate the fewest steals in the league. Atlanta should be able to swing the ball effectively on offense, regardless of their roster, and it must turn their open shots into points. If both Johnson and Daniels sit this one out, which is looking increasingly likely with the All-Star break starting this week, Alexander-Walker’s 3.7 assists per game will be the team high among available players. While there isn’t a line I like to take on the assists, we will look to still tail the Hawks strong ball security by fading the Hornets steals instead. LaMelo Ball averages just 1.1 steals per game this season, and has only 9 steals in his last 10 games. His steals line is sitting at 1.5, and even with -200 odds on the under, it is still the way to go. Ball’s defense has improved in recent seasons, but against a well-disciplined team like the Hawks, it is hard to imagine him securing multiple steals in this matchup. He doesn’t have a dribble-heavy guard to exploit either, and unless he finds himself in the right place at the right time in a passing lane, he will fall short.
For the second bet of the night, we will take the under at 234 points. Charlotte plays at the 24th fastest pace, and they have stayed under the closing total in seven of their last ten games. There has been a real emphasis on defense during the Hornets' win streak, and even though their season numbers aren’t great, they have shown signs of life in recent weeks. For the Hawks, they got absolutely destroyed in transition against Minnesota, so I am expecting Quinn Snyder to really emphasize winning that aspect of play tonight. Finally, the looming injuries for the Hawks and suspensions for the Hornets could see a slightly disjointed offensive unit from both sides. I want to pull the trigger on the +5 point spread with the Hawks on the road, who have been better away than home this year, but with Johnson, Risacher, and Daniels all questionable, we can’t take that risk.
