On Tuesday night, the Atlanta Hawks took down the Dallas Mavericks 124-112, stretching their win streak to seven games. After recently digging themselves out of holes early, the Hawks finally got off to a hot start, storming out to a 10-2 lead. The Hawks led for most of the contest, with the lead ballooning as high as 16 points, before the Mavericks tied the game at 97-97 thanks to a hot streak from deep from Klay Thompson. However, the Mavericks never led, and Jalen Johnson responded with a critical and-one to kickstart a 27-15 run to close out the game. Johnson finished with 27 points, while Nickeil Alexander-Walker led the way with 29. Alexander-Walker had a quiet first half, but he erupted down the stretch to finish 12-for-19 from the field on an efficient 5-for-8 night from deep.
From a betting perspective, we had a stellar 3-1 night. We kicked things off with a big 5-unit pick on Dyson Daniels to haul in over 6.5 rebounds, and he finished with exactly seven. We also laddered that up to 10+ rebounds at +450 odds and only lost a single unit on that bet. To round out the player prop department, we correctly identified that Onyeka Okongwu would have a big night from deep, as he went 3-for-5, cashing over 1.5 threes. Finally, we played it safe with the Hawks moneyline for 4 units at -360, and the Hawks made it look easy to extend their win streak.
Tonight, the Atlanta Hawks (34-31) host the Brooklyn Nets (17-48) in the middle of their five-game homestand. The lowly Nets have lost 11 of their last 13 games, including a 115-102 loss to the Hawks three weeks ago. Brooklyn is looking ahead to the draft lottery, while the Hawks are in the middle of a red-hot win streak. The -1100 moneyline doesn’t offer much value, but there are still plenty of markets we can exploit in this matchup.
Brooklyn is led by Michael Porter Jr. on offense, who is capable of single-handedly turning a game around. His electric scoring and shoot-first mindset are the only reasons the Nets aren’t dead last in the league, but he will be out due to injury tonight. Nolan Traore will also be out tonight for resting purposes, which leaves the Nets very shorthanded against one of the hottest teams in the league. That leaves Noah Clowney and Nic Claxton to lead the charge on offense. However, their 12.8 PPG and 12.1 PPG this season imply the Nets will be in for a long night on both ends of the court.
For the Hawks, they cannot afford to take this one lightly. They let very winnable games slip earlier this season, and with every win incredibly important for their inevitable play-in tournament seeding, this is virtually a must-win game. Dyson Daniels and Jonathan Kuminga are both questionable with lingering injuries, which means we may see more of Zaccharie Risacher on the court tonight. Even if both Daniels and Kuminga sit, the Hawks still have more than enough firepower to manhandle the Nets.
What has been impressive during the Hawks' win streak is not the quality of the opponents they have beaten, but rather the nature of the victories. Atlanta can only beat whoever is in front of them, but their seven-game win streak comes with a small asterisk when the 35-30 76ers, without Embiid, George, and Edgecombe, were their toughest opponent in the last two weeks. However, the Hawks have also gone a sparkling 7-0 against the spread during this run, thanks to all their victories coming by 9+ points. Early deficits have been erased by composed second-half performances, and the Hawks need to keep taking advantage of a soft spot in their schedule, with the Nets (tonight), Bucks, Magic, and Mavericks being their next four opponents. If they can stretch their win streak to 11, the Hawks could suddenly be knocking on the door of the sixth seed with 15 games left in the regular season.
None of that matters tonight. Atlanta is a dominant force in many areas, and they need to take this game seriously. The Nets may not have the same level of star talent, but they still have a roster full of the world’s best basketball players fighting for their future in the league. It is hard to nail down why the Nets are doing so poorly, as there are so many reasons for their demise. Their three-point shooting is inefficient; they are last in the league in rebounds, and they turn the ball over far too often. The Hawks aren’t the most dominant team on the glass, but they are top-ten in both steals and turnovers this season. Those extra possessions will allow the Hawks to pull away early, and the absence of Porter Jr. will prevent the Nets from mounting a comeback. We won’t be touching the -1100 moneyline tonight, even though it is probably free money, but we will be sprinkling on the spread at -15. This is a hefty number, but the Hawks have been blowing out bottom-end teams during their win streak, and I don’t expect much resistance from the Nets. Brooklyn’s last three defeats, and five of their last six, have come by at least 16 points, and a motivated Hawks side at home should be able to add to that total.
In the player prop department, the blowout nature of the game makes it difficult to handicap. If the Hawks grab a big lead early, which is very plausible, they may elect to rest their starters in the second half or, at the very least, in the fourth quarter. Rather than taking their stars to erupt for massive nights, we will instead look to the bench players for value. The Brooklyn Nets struggle against the small forward position, and we are getting a discounted price on Zaccharie Risacher tonight. Risacher is usually on the court for his defense and intangible production, but he should have an increased role tonight against Brooklyn. If at least one of Daniels or Kuminga sits out, and Kuminga probably will, Risacher should be able to easily surpass 20 minutes of action. His points line is at 7.5, which we will take, but we will also sprinkle on 10+ points at +165. Risacher tends to gain confidence against the worst teams in the league, and he has scored at least eight points in four of his last six games. The boosted odds at 10+ points also make it worth a sprinkle if he gets even more minutes in a blowout situation.
I wanted to target Mouhammed Gueye after his explosive offensive rebounding against the Mavericks, but his props have not yet, and may not ever be, released. I don’t feel comfortable tailing Landale in this matchup, nor do I like any of the props with the starters. With injury uncertainty and blowout potential affecting minutes, we will protect our profit with a short slate against the Nets.
