On Wednesday night, the Hawks dominated the Dallas Mavericks to claim a 135-120 victory. They won the first three quarters to take a 19-point lead into the fourth and held on for their 11th win in a row. Seven players scored at least ten points in the win, with CJ McCollum leading the way with a team-high 24 points and a +24 +/-. Atlanta moved the ball well with 36 assists on 55 made field goals, while only turning it over 11 times. The extra possessions from Dallas’ 19 turnovers proved to be the difference, as the Hawks now have their longest win streak since 2015.
From a betting perspective, we went 2-2. The Hawks -320 moneyline was a sweat-free winner, and we came close to a huge night with Dyson Daniels. We took over 6.5 rebounds, 10+ rebounds, and over 18.5 points + rebounds, and he finished with 19 points and 6 rebounds. We posted a slight loss due to the unit allocation, but we are still up more than 70 units on the season.
Tonight, the Atlanta Hawks (38-31) take on the Houston Rockets (41-27) on the road. This will be their toughest test in weeks as they look to string together a 12th straight victory. Houston is a legitimate playoff contender with a clean injury report, so this will be a good measuring stick as to whether the Hawks' win streak signifies a new era or if it was nothing more than a mirage against bottom-end NBA franchises.
Houston is led by Kevin Durant, and they have surrounded the 6th all-time scorer with plenty of young talent. Durant can move to 5th all-time, passing Michael Jordan, with a 50-point night against Atlanta. They don’t have a traditional point guard racking up assists, as most of their ball movement flows through Alperen Sengun on the inside.
Sengun has the potential to turn into a generational talent, as he is taking a very similar career path to three-time MVP Nikola Jokic. His ability to keep his head up in the lane and find the open man makes him tough to slow down, and he also isn't afraid to score himself with 20.3 PPG this season. Sengun’s playmaking and Durant’s elite scoring have the Rockets dominating on offense, but they are even better on the defensive end.
Houston is an exceptionally tall team, with three of their five starters coming in at 6'11" or taller, and the other two at 6’7”. They use their length to disrupt passing lanes on defense and control the rebounds. Houston leads the league in rebounds and offensive rebounds and is top ten in both steals and defensive rating this season. A fully healthy Rockets side cannot be underestimated, especially when considering their 23-10 home record this year. They have lost back-to-back games, both at home against the Lakers, but Houston will be eager to get back on track against the red-hot Hawks.
Atlanta has been able to beat up on non-playoff teams during their 11-game win streak, but now faces a tough remaining schedule for their final 13 games of the regular season. They have clawed into 6th place in the East, but with only half a game separating them from the 9th-place 76ers, their playoff spot is far from secured. Jonathan Kuminga will be out tonight for the Hawks, but they still have more than enough depth to prove they belong in the postseason with a road win over the mighty Rockets. Their offense has been very consistent with 124 PPG during their win streak while posting the best offensive rating in the league during that span. Atlanta is finally healthy and is beginning to show the league what they are made of.
Before we get into today’s picks, you must stop reading this article and go lock in the Hawks championship at 700-1 odds. Will the Hawks win the championship? Probably not. Should they have 700-1 odds when the Hornets (125-1), 76ers (150-1), Magic (250-1), and Heat (250-1) all have much shorter odds despite being below them in the standings? Absolutely not. You will have a great chance to hedge if the Hawks win a round or two, and you shouldn’t need convincing to lay a dollar or two at 700-1 odds. The Hawks aren’t the best team in the league by any means, but we saw the Pacers go to Game 7 of the NBA Finals last year, and the Hawks have the roster composition to replicate that run if a few things go their way.
That said, the value is on Houston tonight. They are only 3.5-point home favorites and will be desperate to win after losing a pair to the Lakers. Atlanta’s win streak has been impressive, and they have gone 10-1 against the spread in that span, but this is the perfect time to sell high on the Hawks. They will get a reality check against Houston, and with a short spread, we really have no choice but to lay the points. Atlanta will get back on track at home on the weekend, but they will have their win streak snapped more often than not.
For the second pick of the night, we will take Jalen Johnson’s rebounds. Houston struggles to box out dominant power forwards, and Johnson is the exact archetype of a player who can post big numbers on the glass against Houston. His rebounding prop is at 9.5, and we will happily take the over at -105 odds with a sprinkle on 12+ rebounds at +280. He has 10+ rebounds in three straight games, and his minutes should be safe with the Rockets being a tough matchup. Atlanta will need his rebounding help down low, and the Rockets' lack of a truly dominant center will allow a motivated Johnson to rack up rebounds.
Finally, we will take an under on CJ McCollum’s threes. His line is at 2.5, juiced to the under, but he has only cleared this prop in one of his last ten games. We will have to swallow a -160 price tag on the under, but it is still the way to go in a brutal matchup. Houston’s length allows them to close out strong shooters at point guard, and the Hawks have no shortage of other three-point threats to pick up the slack. This line should be at 1.5, and we will happily scoop up this under.
