All year long, Doc’s Sports will be breaking down and providing free best bets for every Atlanta Hawks weekday matchup. We won’t always favor the Hawks, but a daily deep dive into their roster and how they match up will allow us to generate a consistent profit throughout the season. We are up more than 70 units so far, but the job is far from over.
Doc’s Sports offers NBA expert picks for every game on our NBA predictions page.
On Friday night, the Hawks had their 11-game win streak snapped with a 117-95 defeat against the Houston Rockets. Houston dominated on the glass 51-37, while Atlanta went 9-for-35 from deep and the Rockets went 14-for-30. Houston took an eight-point lead into halftime before a 39-22 third quarter allowed them to pull away on the scoreboard. Only four Hawks scored more than six points, with Nickeil Alexander-Walker’s 21 points leading the team.
From a betting perspective, we went 2-2 but generated a nice profit with our unit allocation. We laid three and a half points with the Rockets for two units, which cashed with ease, and we also took CJ McCollum to stay under 2.5 threes, and he finished 2-for-5 from deep. Our two losses came with Jalen Johnson hauling in 10+ and 12+ rebounds, and he finished with five.
On Saturday night, the Hawks got back on track with a 126-110 win over the Golden State Warriors. Dyson Daniels had a huge night on the offensive end, tying his career high with 28 points on 12-for-17 from the floor. CJ McCollum also poured in 23 points, as the Hawks built a 28-point lead at one point against a shorthanded Warriors side.
Tonight, the Atlanta Hawks (39-32) host the Memphis Grizzlies (24-46) at State Farm Arena. The Hawks are huge favorites against Memphis, who are 8-23 since January 17th. The Grizzlies are a complete dumpster fire right now, and this matchup presents an excellent opportunity for the Hawks to build a bit of breathing room in a crowded Eastern Conference playoff race. Their 12 wins in the last 13 games have pulled the Hawks into 6th place, but just 2.5 games separate the 5th-place Raptors and the 10th-place Hornets.
Memphis will be without Santi Aldama, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Brandon Clarke, Cedric Coward, Zach Edey, Jahmai Mashack, Ja Morant, Scotty Pippen Jr., and Cam Spencer tonight. That leaves them with Ty Jerome’s 19.9 PPG leading the way, with Jaylen Wells at 12.7 PPG their next best available option. A starting five featuring two with Javon Small, GG Jackson, and Olivier-Maxence Prosper will struggle against the Hawks. Those five are not only falling short of being household names, but even moderate NBA fans are unlikely to recognize the Grizzlies' starters. Memphis made some solid trades at the deadline to set itself up for a promising future, and its only goal this year is to evaluate and develop prospective talents rather than win basketball games.
Let’s get back to the Hawks. Atlanta has been excellent against tanking teams this year, emphasized by their recent 11-game win streak and Saturday’s win over the Warriors. Not only are the Hawks winning, but they are doing so in dominant fashion with an 11-1 ATS record in their last 12 victories. They were double-digit favorites on five occasions and favorites of at least six and a half points in 11 of those 12 wins. Tonight’s matchup gives them another real shot at a big win, which would be crucial in their push to avoid the play-in tournament.
Atlanta cannot afford to overlook the Grizzlies, but they really shouldn’t have any problems running up the score. Jalen Johnson will be the best player on the court, and the entire starting five and bench rotation are arguably better than Memphis's entire roster. Johnson will be able to dominate on the inside alongside Onyeka Okongwu, as the Grizzlies have really struggled to control the paint since trading Jaren Jackson Jr. They give up plenty of rebounds to commanding big men, and Johnson is one of the most dominant power forwards in that regard. He has taken a bit of a backseat over the last ten games, posting 19.4 PPG with 8.3 rebounds and 7.8 assists. Those numbers are still impressive, but they aren’t as dominant as earlier in the year when Johnson had less help around him. He hasn’t dropped off in efficiency; just his minutes have dipped slightly, and he is taking fewer shots than he used to. This is secretly a blessing in disguise. Johnson has allowed his teammates to take on a bigger role against the weaker teams the Hawks have faced over the last few weeks, and he will get back on track once the level of competition picks up. He is questionable tonight with a shoulder injury, but the Hawks have more than enough talent to take care of business without him.
One player I expect to really step up is Nickeil Alexander-Walker. Alexander-Walker has been electric during his first season in Atlanta, doubling his point total from last season. He exudes confidence from behind the arc and will not hesitate to pile on the points against the helpless Grizzlies. I expect Atlanta to shoot plenty of threes to create long rebounds on missed shots, an area the Grizzlies have struggled with in recent games. When the Hawks get multiple chances to sink a deep ball against a disastrous Memphis defense, they will emerge with three points from a possession more often than not. For our first bet of the night, we will take Alexander-Walker’s overs on both points and threes. We can secure -175 odds on 3+ threes and +140 odds on 4+ threes tonight, and we will tail both of those props. He has scored 3+ in five of his last 10, and 4+ in 4 of his last 10. This is a dream matchup for him to find early success on the outside, and we will also take him to clear 20+ points (-115) and 25+ points (+235) too. He has scored 20+ in seven of his last ten, and there is no reason we should still be getting -115 odds on that prop. Alexander-Walker has blossomed into the Hawks' most consistent deep ball threat, and he will be the primary focus of their attack tonight.
For the next bet, we will lay the points with the Hawks on a spread of -14. Atlanta has been winning and covering against non-playoff teams consistently, and there is no reason to expect that trend to change here. They take on a depleted Memphis side that looks terrible on both ends of the court, and Quin Snyder will rally his troops from the opening tip. The Hawks used to have problems getting going in the first halves, but that appears to no longer be the case after they jumped out to recent early leads. They will grab a big lead early and never look back, easily covering this lofty spread.
