On Monday night, the Atlanta Hawks took down the Boston Celtics 112-102 for a crucial home win. The two teams were tied at 54 at halftime, but the Hawks' 36-22 third quarter gave them a comfortable fourth quarter lead. It grew all the way to 21 points before Boston made a late push, but the Hawks held on to leapfrog into fifth place in the East. Jalen Johnson and Onyeka Okongwu both posted 20-point double doubles, the joint-most points on the team, with six different Hawks hitting a double-digit point total. Jonathan Kuminga had a big impact off the bench, slamming down vicious dunks and highlight-reel blocks on the other end. The Hawks swarmed a fatigued Boston team, holding Jaylen Brown to 9-for-29 from the field. Okongwu went 0-for-4 from deep in the first half before hitting four triples after the break, and Dyson Daniels hit two three-pointers after only hitting 16 all season. It was an all-around team effort from the Hawks, as they are poised for a suddenly deep playoff run with a 17-3 record in their last 20 games.

From a betting perspective, we went a perfect 3-0. Atlanta easily covered the -1.5 point spread on their home court, jumping out to a big lead and never looking back. We also targeted Dyson Daniels for our player props, looking for him to get 2+ steals and 22+ points, rebounds, and assists. He finished with an 18-5-5 stat line, clearing his total, adding a pair of takeaways on the defensive end to complete the sweep. We went up 7.3 units last night, bringing our season total to 95.3 units of profit, but the job is far from over.
Tonight, the Atlanta Hawks (43-33) hit the road to take on the Orlando Magic (40-35). This is a massive matchup for both sides, as the 5th-place Hawks are only 2.5 games ahead of the 8th-place Magic, with the Heat and Hornets both 0.5 games back of Orlando in 9th and 10th. A victory tonight is crucial for both Atlanta and Orlando, but only one will prevail.
A little more than a month ago, the Hawks were in tenth place, seven games back of the Magic for 6th. However, a 16-2 record in their last 18, combined with injury issues in Orlando, allowed the Hawks to close the gap and leapfrog the Magic out of the play-in tournament positions. Orlando has struggled to string wins together as of late, but has won two of their last three since snapping their six-game losing skid. They are on the second night of a back-to-back, meaning tired legs combined with depleted depth have them as +4.5 point home underdogs with +145 odds on the moneyline.
The Magic came into the year with high hopes, with a scorer like Desmond Bane joining Paolo Banchero and Franz Wagner, combined with a strong defense, giving them real aspirations of a deep playoff run. Things haven’t gone according to plan, as a lengthy injury to Wagner left the offensive workload on Banchero and new arrival Bane, but neither has been very efficient this year. Orlando’s defense went from spectacular to solid, leaving them in the play-in tournament positions with seven games to go in the season. The Magic will have a short bench again with this being the second night of a back-to-back, and they can kiss their top-six hopes goodbye if they drop another one to the Hawks.
These two teams met on the unofficial Magic City Night two weeks ago, with the Hawks making it look easy as they built a 29-point lead to eventually win 124-112. Nickeil Alexander-Walker erupted for a career-high 41 points with nine three-pointers, allowing the Hawks to dominate on the inside and from behind the arc. Atlanta is fully healthy tonight outside of a questionable status for Jock Landale due to illness, giving them a deep bench to complement their rest advantage. Orlando struggles to slow down the three-ball from dominant wings and rarely shoots the deep ball itself. They rely on Banchero driving headfirst into the lane, getting to the free-throw line, and locking in on defense. The only problem with that strategy is that the whistles disappear in the playoffs, and the Magic no longer have a truly elite defense with the 13th-best defensive rating. The Hawks do an excellent job at shutting down superstars, with Daniels, Alexander-Walker, and Johnson all elite defenders, and the Magic don’t have the depth to make them pay. Referees have started to swallow their whistles with the playoffs approaching, and two playoff-bound, or at the very least, play-in-bound teams won’t get many calls tonight. That favors the Hawks, who will do most of their scoring from the outside, over the Magic, who like to get into the paint.
Atlanta is a -4.5 point favorite over Orlando tonight, and we will happily lay the points. The Hawks have not only gone 16-2 in their last 18 games, but they have also gone 14-4 against the spread in that span. Not only is this team winning, but they are covering the number more often than not, and this is the perfect matchup for them tonight. Orlando is still without Wagner; a murky injury report on the second night of a back-to-back tilts the court even further in favor of Atlanta, and this is still a short spread for a Hawks side that is 20-17 on the road this year. If it isn’t broke, don’t fix it, and I see no reason to waver from backing the Hawks at this stage of the season with odds like these.
For the second bet of the night, we have no choice but to tail Alexander-Walker. He has been flying over his point totals with 20+ points in 8 of his last 10 and 11 of his last 14, yet still has +100 odds to do so again tonight. He torched Orlando a couple of weeks ago, so we will take those plus-money odds with a sprinkle on 3+ threes at -170 and 4+ threes at +145, too. Orlando struggles to slow down shooting guards, especially ones who specialize in the deep ball over driving into the paint, and Alexander-Walker’s growth this year ensures his minutes are safe even with a deep rotation.
Finally, we will take Zaccharie Risacher to go over 10.5 points + rebounds. Risacher was a spark off the bench for Atlanta last time out and has cleared this line in back-to-back games. A crowded rotation will make it hard for him to secure 20+ minutes on the court, but he has been efficient at crashing the glass and getting involved on offense during his limited play time. The former first overall pick struggled against the Magic last time out, but I expect Quin Snyder to get him involved off the bench early and for him to clear this line for a third straight game.
