NBA Betting Trends Analysis and Expert Handicapping 5/19/2026

Two rounds of NBA playoff basketball are in the books. And with the conference finals now tipping off, the real money is on the table. There's plenty of question marks on which bets to ride and which teams to fade, but all that stops here. I'm back with another edition of betting trends to watch out for.
Between the upsets, role players stealing the spotlight, and superstars coughing the ball up like it's a hot potato, looking at you James Harden, there's a lot to sift through out there. I've already done the legwork though, so let's get into the betting insights you need to know going forward.
Doc’s Sports offers NBA expert picks for every game on our NBA predictions page.
Fade Thunder as Favorites
Usually in the NBA, when a team earns the villain status, it’s because they simply win too much. That has not exactly been the case for the Oklahoma City Thunder this year, at least not against the spread. For the remainder of this postseason, bettors need to be looking at fading Oklahoma City when they are listed favorites, which at this point is basically every single game they play.
Look, let's get this out of the way first. Oklahoma City is not the same team that bulldozed the league a season ago. The Thunder are just 42-45 against the spread, covering barely 48% of their games. Let that register for a moment.
They swept their way through the Suns and Lakers without dropping a game, sure, but the Western Conference Finals opened with San Antonio handing them a double overtime loss in Game 1. That was a statement.
The reasoning is pretty straightforward. Oklahoma City leans heavily on Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, and when he is not carrying the scoring load, the responsibility falls almost entirely on Jalen Williams and whatever role players can chip in on a given night. That is a thin offensive margin to be covering big spreads consistently. The Thunder are a good basketball team, but good enough to justify the price tag Vegas keeps putting on them? The numbers say no. Fade them.
Lay Points with New York
Cleveland skating past Detroit in a Game 7 blowout was a great story. Moving on to the Eastern Conference Finals though, this is where the Cavaliers' run starts to look like it may have just hit a wall. New York is built differently, and the numbers back that up in a big way. Bettors need to lay the points with the Knicks for this series.
Before anyone jumps out of their seat over how shaky New York looked going down 2-1 to Atlanta in Round 1, keep in mind this is a Knicks team that has rattled off seven straight wins and gone 6-1 against the spread since that moment. They swept Philadelphia in four games and have had over a week of rest while Cleveland just burned through a full seven games against Detroit. Fresh legs against a tired team matters deeply in a playoff series.
Here is where it gets interesting on the other side of this matchup. Cleveland finished the full season including playoffs at just 40-56 against the spread. That is practically a caution sign for people to lose their money.
Meanwhile, the Knicks are 51-42 against the spread this season. Look, the Cavaliers can absolutely make this series interesting and steal a game or two, but backing them against the spread against the hottest team in the playoffs right now is a good way to lose money fast. Lay the points with the Knicks and don't look back.
Take Over in Cavaliers-Knicks Series
Not only should bettors be laying the points with the Knicks in this series, but put an asterisk next to the over while you are at it. This is too much offensive firepower on both sides for games to consistently come up short.
Yes, the Knicks have been statistically the best defense this postseason, surrendering just 101 points a game, but the Cavaliers have shown all season they can fill it up against physical, aggressive defenses, doing exactly that multiple times against Detroit, arguably one of the toughest defensive teams in the league this season.
Between Donovan Mitchell having a career postseason run, Evan Mobley fresh off a strong series, Jarrett Allen controlling the paint, James Harden facilitating, and a handful of role players who can knock it down from the perimeter, Cleveland brings more than enough firepower to keep the scoreboard moving.
On the other side, the Knicks may be the deepest scoring team left in the playoffs. Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, OG Anunoby, and Mikal Bridges give you four legitimate scorers before even getting to the bench. Don’t forget—two of the three regular season matchups between these teams hit the over. That is not a coincidence. Back the over in this matchup.
