The San Antonio Spurs made the playoffs for the first time in seven years last season, and marched all the way to the NBA Finals before falling to the New York Knicks. Victor Wembanyama is the cornerstone of this franchise, and a strong core around him has the Spurs pegged for another deep playoff run. Can San Antonio take it one step further and win their sixth NBA championship, or will Wembanyama have to wait another year before he claims the league’s ultimate prize?

San Antonio Spurs Offseason Recap
The San Antonio Spurs have a young core around Wembanyama, which meant they could afford to play it safe in the offseason and prioritize internal development. The Spurs’ major veteran signing was the acquisition of Tobias Harris, who is expected to slot into the starting lineup at power forward. Harris is 34 years old and entering the twilight of his career in his 16th season in the NBA. Harris is a reliable spot-up shooter who can create his own offense, and knows what it takes to win having played for four different teams in five different stints. His 14.1 PPG with 5.9 rebounds are not eye-popping numbers, but his high efficiency ensures he will always have a spot in an NBA offense. He is only an average defender at this stage of his career, but he can punish smaller matchups in the post, reliably drain it from behind the arc, and is surrounded with enough defensive talent that he will rarely get exposed on that end of the court.
The Spurs kept virtually their entire rotation intact while adding Harris and four rookies from the 2026 NBA Draft to the mix. The Spurs took Jayden Quaintance at 20th overall and traded up for Tarris Reed Jr. at 26th overall, while also adding two second rounders in Ja’Kobi Gillespie and Maliq Brown at 42nd and 44th overall. While it will take a massive jump for these rookies to get into the rotation, the Spurs suddenly have a wealth of young talent on the bench they can lean on if their starters miss time due to injury. This leaves the Spurs in the enviable position of having both top-end talent and a deep bench, setting them up for another successful season.
2026 San Antonio Spurs Season Expectations
If Victor Wembanyama remains healthy, anything short of an NBA championship will be seen as a failure for this franchise. Wembanyama is the MVP frontrunner at +200, he is the runaway favorite for Defensive Player of the Year at -350, as the impact he makes on both ends of the court is immeasurable. He led the league in blocks for the third consecutive season with 3.1 per game last year, but his defensive impact goes even further than those impressive numbers. Opposing teams are wary of entering the paint with Wembanyama patrolling the high-percentage areas, as his monstrous eight-foot wingspan lets him close out attackers with ease. On the other end of the court, Wembanyama put up a career high 25.0 PPG on 51.2% from the floor, and can even shoot the three-ball with solid efficiency too to help space the floor. His 11.5 rebounds per game is a big reason why the Spurs hauled in the second most rebounds in the league while leading the NBA with a 77.3% defensive rebounding rate.
The Spurs are where they are thanks to Wembanyama, and that can overshadow the strengths of the rest of their roster. De’Aaron Fox has been the perfect veteran guard to solidify the backcourt, and was the second option behind Wembanyama last year with 18.6 PPG. His partnership with Stephon Castle, both of whom had more than six assists per game last year, gives the Spurs two confident ball handlers who can facilitate this offense. Castle was drafted fourth overall in 2024, and has quickly turned into the foundation of this team alongside Wembanyama. He is an excellent defender on the perimeter, he can both pass and shoot on offense, and he is only going to get better as he is still 21 years old. A backcourt of Castle and Fox with Wembanyama at center ensures there are no positional weaknesses for San Antonio, which makes it hard to doubt this team if they can stay healthy.
One man to keep an eye on this year is Dylan Harper. Harper is expected to lead the second unit, but there are rumblings that he may eventually take over for Castle in the starting five. Whether Harper or Castle starts, both will get plenty of minutes and will have a massive impact on the ceiling for the Spurs. Harper only scored 11.8 PPG last year, but he turned it up in the playoffs and his excellent shot selection ensures his place in the rotation is safe.
The Spurs dominated on the inside on offense, they were one of the best defensive teams at stopping the three-ball with a 35.2% rate for opponents, and have a very deep roster brimming with young talent to replicate those numbers this year. The scary thing about San Antonio is they trimmed the veterans off their lineup to make space for incoming rookies, and the core of their roster has still yet to hit their prime. It is natural to expect their young players to get even better this season, and they absolutely deserve to be right alongside the Oklahoma City Thunder at the top of the Western Conference odds.
2026 San Antonio Spurs Schedule Breakdown
The NBA wants Victor Wembanyama in the spotlight as often as possible, and their 34 nationally televised games are tied for the most in the league. They open up the season at home against the Thunder and have the luxury of playing six of their first eight games at the Frost Bank Center. That includes home matchups against the Kings, Mavericks, and Jazz, with their two early road games also coming against the Jazz and Kings. Skipping to Christmas, the Spurs kick off the holiday festivities with a noon tipoff at Madison Square Garden in an NBA Finals rematch, which is expected to be one of the best games of the entire season. In January, San Antonio takes a trip across the Atlantic to France and England to take on the New Orleans Pelicans, both of which are already sold out. San Antonio also has the privilege of ending the year with four straight at home, which could be the difference as they potentially jockey for the top seed in the league and home court advantage throughout the postseason.
2026 San Antonio Spurs Betting Odds
The San Antonio Spurs enter the year with a sky-high 60.5 win total after finishing 62-20 last year. This puts them in line to challenge for the most wins in the NBA at +165 odds, and for top seed in the Western Conference at +110. The odds imply they are all but guaranteed to make the playoffs at -50000, and they are just behind the Thunder in both their Western Conference odds at +160 and NBA title odds at +270.
In the NBA Cup, the Spurs are heavy favorites to win West Group C with -145 odds to come out on top, and have the benefit of hosting the Lakers and Warriors, who are their biggest threats, while visiting Portland and Sacramento, which should still be straightforward victories. They have +220 odds to reach the NBA Cup Finals and +400 odds to win the NBA Cup.
Victor Wembanyama is at the top of several individual award odds, as he is the favorite to win MVP at +200 and Defensive Player of the Year at -350. In terms of single game performances, you can also secure +100 odds on Wembanyama to record 10+ blocks in any regular season game, something he has already done twice in his career. Dylan Harper is also in the running for Sixth Man of the Year at +750 odds, while he is +1000 to win Most Improved Player.
2026 San Antonio Spurs Season Predictions and Best Bets
There is no shortage of motivation for San Antonio to succeed both in the regular season and the playoffs, and a truly dominant core has all the pieces it needs to do exactly that. Wembanyama is a freak of nature on both ends of the floor, the Spurs defense is incredibly strong around him, and a deep bench will ensure they can survive the grueling 82-game season. They are near the top of the odds list in nearly every category, which means it is difficult to find lucrative wagers with San Antonio.
We could take Over 60.5 wins at -110 odds, which I do like, but the better bet is for the Spurs to have the most regular season wins in the NBA at +165 odds. The Thunder are the biggest threat to San Antonio, and edged them out at the top last year, but OKC lost some key pieces while the Spurs only got better. Additionally, the Thunder are +105 to finish as the West’s top seed with +115 odds to have the most wins in the league, while the gap for the Spurs is much larger at +110 and +165, respectively. That extra value in taking them to not only finish on top of the West, but to also edge out any Eastern Conference team makes the +165 prop the way to go.
Top Pick: San Antonio Spurs to have the Most Regular Season Wins +165
