2018 Super Bowl Early Betting Odds with Expert NFL Predictions
by Trevor Whenham - 1/26/2017
Proving that it's never too early to look ahead, BookMaker posted futures odds for Super Bowl LII on Tuesday - nearly two weeks before Super Bowl LI is even played. It would, of course, be seven kinds of insane to make serious bets on these numbers now - before coaching staffs are finalized, free agency happens, or the draft occurs. Heck, we might not even know what city every team will be playing in yet. Just because we can't seriously bet them doesn't mean we can't have some fun looking at them, though. Remember, before the season you could have had the Falcons at 80/1 or better, so anything can happen with these numbers. Here is a look at some of the most interesting numbers, followed by the complete list:
New England Patriots (+500): At some point Tom Brady is going to look mortal, and there will be a period of adjustment for this organization. After six straight trips to the AFC Championship, though, it's hard to argue against them being worth this price. They are deserving favorites because they always are.
Green Bay Packers (+1000): The second half of this season was very impressive - until it really wasn't last week. I can't help but feel, though, that they have a whole lot of work to do. They don't have a good answer at running back - or at least not enough good answers. They are far too reliant on Jordy Nelson and showed what can happen when he isn't ready. And I still don't believe in the coaching staff entirely after all these years. I reserve judgment.
Pittsburgh Steelers (+1000): I don't believe Big Ben is actually considering retirement, but that still needs to be resolved. If and when he commits to coming back, he and the team need to figure out how to make his explosive self a more frequent visitor than it was this year. Antonio Brown needs to get on the same page as his team, too - or they need to get better at coping with his idiosyncrasies. No value here.
Seattle Seahawks (+1100): There are few things in this league as hard as building a great offensive line. The Seahawks have the exact opposite of one right now and are basically starting from scratch. That's tough to do, and until I see real progress on that front this price is just a bad joke.
Atlanta Falcons (+1200): It sure doesn't feel like this team is going to fade away to nothing. Matt Ryan is at his peak, and the roster just keeps getting better. They started four rookies on defense in the NFC Championship Game, so the defense should keep improving. They do have the dreaded Super Bowl hangover to deal with, though, and for pretty much every team but New England and Seattle after their win lately it has been a real problem. Next year could be too soon for them, but they will remain a contender.
Dallas Cowboys (+1200): Can the rookies turn a corner and take steps forward, or will they regress? Can they turn the Tony Romo situation into a useful asset and not let it become a distraction? Big challenges both, but I remain optimistic. I would pick them to win the NFC right now, so the price feels right.
Oakland Raiders (+1800): I liked a whole lot about the season this year, and the Derek Carr injury was proof of just how cruel this sport is. If he comes back strong, and the uncertainty of where the team will be playing isn't a distraction, then this team could again be dangerous. And if they don't pout about how things ended for them this year then they should be very hungry, too. At the very least this is a fair price, and I think it is more than that.
Indianapolis Colts (+3300): I would feel better if they had made a coaching change, and I don't know who the GM will be yet. They should have plenty of good choices for that role, though, and the right guy has so much to work with here. At this price they could be worth a shot.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+3500): I wish this price was a little higher, but I like the team a lot. Jameis Winston should take another step forward, and their young roster should continue to develop. They were flirting with the playoffs right up until the end this year, and should have it in them to take another big step forward. No value at this price, but I didn't want to ignore them here, either.
Miami Dolphins (+4500): As a long shot this is an attractive play. They did a lot of things well this year, and you could tell as the season went along that they were only getting better as they understood what the coaching staff wanted from them. Injuries were a big factor for them as well, but if they can stay healthy and jump out of the gate better than last year then I could see some real nice value in this price.
