Leave No Stone Unturned:

Taking a horse to win is the most straightforward bet you can make at the Belmont Stakes, but it may not be the most effective. A pair of favorites in Sovereignity and Journalism control a large share of the implied win percentage, so expanding your bets is crucial this year more than ever. Taking a moderate underdog to Place (finish in the top two) or Show (Finish in the top three) can payout even more than selecting the correct favorite to win the race. Place and Show bets are two of the best ways to benefit from a strong underdog performance without needing them to secure the outright victory. At the Preakness Stakes last month, Gosger was a 20-1 underdog but still paid out 4.5-1 and 3-1 to Place and Show when he finished second. Had you only taken Gosger to win, you would have been left with empty pockets despite a strong showing from the underdog. Taking horses with 8-1 or longer odds to Win, Place, and Show is a great way to profit at this event.

The implied chance at a big payout on a Trifecta or Superfecta can be fun to cheer for, but it is certainly not the way to make money at the Belmont Stakes. Sticking to single horse bets while mixing in an Exacta (Top two finishers) once in a while is the way to go this weekend. Plucking out the top three or four finishers is no easy task, and it will often leave dozens of combinations chasing an increasingly smaller payout. There is nothing wrong with a longshot or two, but remember that Superfectas are the parlays of horse racing. They like playing in Vancouver and have won consecutive matches here. Their last visit, in October, produced a 3-0 victory. Home pitch hasn’t meant much in this series lately, as the road side has earned points in five straight meetings. There is no other way to say it – the Whitecaps look like crap lately. They have lost their winning touch. They have just one win in four MLS matches against a favorable schedule. On Sunday they played one of the worst matches we can remember in the Champions Cup final against Cruz Azul in Mexico City. They squandered all their hard work to get to the final only to lose, 5-0. They not only didn’t have a shot on goal, but not even a shot at all. They earned less than 33 percent on possession. Seattle has won two of three MLS matches, and they are in solid form. They had a setback against Minnesota at Lumen Field last time out, but they did score two in a losing effort.
