The third and final Triple Crown race of the year is scheduled for 7:04 PM EST this Saturday, as the Belmont Stakes gets underway. Nine horses are looking to claim victory at Saratoga Race Course, the temporary home for the race while Belmont Park is under construction. The nine-horse field ensures there are a wide variety of ways to attack this lineup, and sticking to a few simple wagering strategies can let you stay ahead.

Since horse racing uses a pari-mutuel odds format, you aren’t facing off against the sportsbook, but rather your fellow bettors. This means taking advantage of public perception, good or bad, is essential to staying ahead of the odds. By carefully examining all the options before making any picks, you will maximize your chances at coming out on top. Stick to the Basics:
The thought of nailing a trifecta or superfecta can be tempting, but exotic bets at the Belmont Stakes must be kept to a minimum. These are nothing more than same game parlays translated into horse racing, and will result in a negative day a large percentage of the time. Every horse is coming in at 2-1 or longer, which means each of the nine competitors will still offer a strong payout. If you really want to swing for the fences, mixing in an exacta or two can be justified. An exacta is when you correctly pick the top two finishing horses, which is a far easier task than correctly selecting three or four. Everyone has a story where they lost their sports betting parlay by one leg, and that will become a common theme if you spread around your bankroll on several superfectas. 

The smarter move is to stick to win, place, or show bets individually. For favorites, taking them to win outright or come inside the top two will offer a strong return, while a show bet is often heavily juiced. For the underdogs, putting a majority of your wager on a show or place bet is the way to go. Everyone loves a big underdog that wins outright, but you will end up with a winning ticket far more often with a place or show bet. There are four horses coming in at 12-1 or longer, which means even in a shallow nine-horse field, there is plenty of money to be made on either of those four to win, place, or show. Putting a dollar or two on an exotic bet can be exciting, but it is important to remember that they are nothing more than lottery tickets. If building and maintaining a legitimate bankroll is your goal, sticking to the basics is a great way to limit your variance at the Belmont Stakes. 

Do Your Due Diligence:

Don’t be blinded by one year's results. We saw the same three horses finish in the same order at both the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont Stakes, but that is far from a common occurrence. It was only the second time in the last 50 years that happened, with the last example coming back in 1977. It will be natural for casual bettors to look at the horses that thrived in the Kentucky Derby and assume that those results automatically translate to Belmont Stakes success, but that is not the case. 

Instead, you must take a look at all nine horses before placing a bet. The pari-mutuel odds system means that there will be no loose lines from the sportsbook, and the only way to get a real edge is to have a deeper understanding than your fellow bettors. Researching wagering strategies is a great place to start, but looking at recent results, trends, trainers, jockeys, and running styles will also have a huge role to play. If you find an edge, only then should you even consider dropping hard-earned cash on the Belmont Stakes. 

Make a Plan and Stick to it:

Whether you are taking in the festivities at the race track or watching the event from home, it can be easy to get lured into the theatrics and stray from your game plan. Relying on gut feelings or vibes from the horses before the race is a great way to wash away your hard-earned bankroll. You have likely spent significant time researching this race, and making up last-second exotic bets is not the winning strategy. Whether you won or lost on previous races, or are just tuning in for the grand finale, making a plan and sticking to it is crucial for success.
