2019 Season Win Total Picks NCAA Football: 'Over'
Last year I whiffed on this Arkansas team as badly as I have ever whiffed on a football team. I was bullish on Chad Morris' first team, and they were one of my largest futures wagers, taking them to sail 'over' 5.5 wins. Yeah, that didn't happen.
Last season's implosion has me naturally wary of this group in Morris' second turn. He had some talent and experience in Lafayette last year. But instead of trying to make something out of team he had, Morris seemed more content to clear the decks, overhaul the systems on both sides of the ball, and lay the foundation for what he hopes will be a long stay with the Hogs.
It wasn't pretty.
Arkansas was No. 114 in points scored and No. 108 in points allowed. They were outscored by two touchdowns per game and suffered humiliating losses at Colorado State and at home against North Texas. Despite those awful losses, the Razorbacks were also competitive in losses against Texas A&M and LSU.
Morris and defensive coordinator John Chavis are well-respected coaches. But, frankly, they were both awful last year.
If they are going to be any better this year, it will rest on the arm of one of two graduate transfer quarterbacks. Ben Hicks (SMU) and Nick Starkel (Texas A&M) are both vying for the job. Morris had a quarterback controversy coming into last season as well. And we saw how that worked out.
This year's Razorbacks team is significantly less experienced than last year's group. They are also still too small in the trenches, by SEC standards, and will routinely get pushed around. There is some moderate skill position talent, but this group has a long way to go.
Arkansas should top last year's win total by the end of September. They have home games against Portland State, Colorado State and San Jose State that should all be wins. Then again, after last year's pathetic nonconference showing, nothing can be taken for granted.
The Razorbacks also have a late-season home game against Western Kentucky that should be a win. Games at Ole Miss, A&M, at Kentucky, against Miss State and against Missouri should at least be competitive. And if Arkansas can just pull a couple of upsets, they could go bowling.
I don't trust this team at all. However, if I have to make a call, I'm going to predict them to get those four easy wins and then steal a couple others and get me the 'over' that they should've came through with last season.
