You don't bet against Clemson.
I'm going to repeat that: you don't bet against Clemson.
The reigning National Champions have reached Alabama status. That is to say that you only bet on the Tigers, you don't ever waste your time betting against them. And Clemson earned this level of betting respect the hard way. Namely, by demolishing Notre Dame and Alabama last January to improve their record to 4-1 against the spread the last three seasons in College Football Playoff games.
Beyond beating the SEC behemoth (again) in the national title game, Clemson has been excellent at the window the last four seasons despite facing inflated numbers . The Tigers are a healthy 35-23 ATS the last four years, including that stellar 4-1 mark in their biggest, most high-profile games.
Clemson lost an incredible amount of talent from the nation's No. 1 scoring defense. All four defensive linemen were high NFL Draft picks, and the Tigers have only four starters back on that side of the ball. However, with the way that Dabo Swinney and Co. have recruited, the expectations are that the next group of studs will emerge.
It's not going to be a problem if it takes the defense time to figure itself out. Because no one in the country is going to be able to stop Clemson on offense. They have eight starters back from the group that averaged 44.3 points per game last year. That includes future first round NFL Draft pick Trevor Lawrence at quarterback, electric running back Travis Etienne, their top three receivers, and a dominating offensive line with three senior starters.
I repeat: no one is going to stop Clemson's offense.
The sportsbooks have given the Tigers no margin for error; one loss and they go 'under' their season win total. But there is no way that I see them taking that loss. In fact, they have only three games with even the potential for a loss. The first is in Week 2 against Texas A&M. But the Aggies are more hype than hope, and that game is in Clemson.
The second losable game is against Syracuse, a team that has been a thorn in the side of Clemson the past two years. However, Clemson is flat-out better than the Orange, and they will be hearty favorites in that one. The third, and final, potentially losable games comes in the regular-season finale at South Carolina. I like USC a bit this year. And that game is in Columbia. But Clemson has won five straight in the series by an average of 23.4 points per game.
You don't bet against Clemson. So if you are going to play this one, you play it 'over'.
