Take TCU (-1) over Kansas State (2 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14)

After last week’s win, I am now 40-24 (62%) with my free plays in this space over the last 64 weeks. Kansas State is one of the hottest teams in college basketball right now, having won nine straight and pulling off upset after upset in league play. No one is going to be overlooking this team anymore, though, after they have vaulted into the Top 15. TCU is outstanding at home, and they will be ready to play here. They lost their last home game, last Saturday, to Iowa State, to snap their own 11-game winning streak. I don’t see them losing two in a row at home, though, and this veteran squad is going to be ready to go. Kansas State has four wins this season against Top 60 teams. But three of them were in overtime, and only one of them came on the road. I just don’t see them continuing their run of good fortune. And with K-State potentially looking ahead to next week’s date with Kansas, this looks like a prime spot for a slip up. Take First Half San Francisco (-6) over Seattle (4:30 p.m., Saturday, Jan. 14)

By virtue of squeaking by the Rams, and Detroit upsetting Green Bay on the road, Seattle made it to the postseason. The Seahawks will face division rival San Francisco, who might be the best team in football. These teams squared off twice, with the 49ers winning and covering the spread twice, 21-13 and 27-7. Despite starting three different quarterbacks this season, the Niners ended up 6th in scoring and was very good late, averaging 37.3 PPG in their last three contests. Seattle had their fair share of defensive problems and was 25th in points allowed but did hold offensively-challenged the Jets and Rams to 22 total points in their last two outings. I’ll say San Fran gets off to a fast start at home over their rivals, and note this; favorites of 2 to 6 points vs. the first half line like the Niners, averaging 23-27 PPG, against an opponent that allows 23-27 PPG, after eight or more games, after a win by 21 or more points, are 30-8 ATS at halftime when the two teams collide.
