The Super Bowl pits the best NFL team from the AFC against the best team from the NFC, but this Sunday's matchup between Denver and Carolina in Super Bowl 50 has created quite a bit of media attention for both Peyton Manning as the starting quarterback for the Broncos and for Panthers' quarterback Cam Newton as the primary focal points of the game.
BetOnline has already released a grocery list of player props in conjunction with Sunday's big game, but I decided to focus all of my attention on making a few picks for the top-valued props surrounding these two marquee players
Super Bowl 50- Peyton Manning Top Prop Picks
Manning was able to work his way back into the NFL limelight after missing a good part of the second half of the regular season with two fairly solid performances in the playoffs. The whole issue surrounding the future Hall of Fame quarterback has been his health and his ability to play at an effective level his last two times out has to be encouraging sign for another decent performance this Sunday night against Carolina.
My first top Peyton Manning prop pick is the -165 betting odds that his first past attempt is a completion. The betting odds the pass falls incomplete or is intercepted are +135. While there is some risk in the odds with this pick, the value is still there. There is always a chance that Denver head coach Gary Kubiak lets Manning air things out the first time he steps back to pass, but it is far more logical to assume that the first pass play will be a high-percentage throw to get things going in the right direction with positive yards.
The second top-prop pick would be the -105 betting odds that Manning throws for more than 235.5 yards. The odds his passing total stays "under" in this prop are set at -125. He threw for 222 yards on 23 attempts in the Divisional Round against Pittsburgh and this total dropped to 176 yards on 20 attempts against New England in the AFC title game. This pick is all about how you see this game playing out, and I believe that Manning is going to have to go to the air much more than this to try and keep this game close.
Super Bowl 50- Cam Newton Top Prop Picks
Newton is probably the most dangerous player at the quarterback position the league has ever seen given his overall size and speed. The likes of Randall Cunningham years ago and more recently Michael Vick were great playmakers at this position, but neither player could match Newton's overall skill set.
I decided to rely heavily on those skills in my first top pick for his Super Bowl props. The betting odds that Newton's first rushing attempt of the game is "over" 5.5 yards are set at +115 against betting odds of -145 that it ends up being under 5.5 yards. I am taking the over in this prop because I honestly believe that he might try and make a statement with this first run. Denver knows that containing Newton in the pocket is a huge part of the gameplan. However, I still like his chances to break off a big run the first time he decides to take off with the ball to show the Broncos that their shadowing plan will not work.
My other top prop pick for Cam in Sunday's game are the -205 betting odds that he throws a touchdown pass before he throws an interception. To go the other way in this prop, the moneyline odds are set at +165. Going back over his performance in the regular season, Newton tossed 35 touchdowns against just 10 interceptions. Going back to Week 10, he was picked off just once in his final eight games. He did throw an interception in the NFC title game against Arizona, but that was late in the second quarter after he had already helped lead his team to a 24-7 lead.
