Doc’s Sports offers college basketball expert picks for every game on our NCAA basketball predictions page.
Duke Blue Devils +450
The Blue Devils are coming into the season as the favorites of the nation. They do rank second in the AP Poll, behind Florida, but Vegas likes their odds of cutting down the nets at the end of March Madness. They have a huge hole in the roster left by Cameron Boozer and Isaiah Evans. The Blue Devils will be heavily reliant on John Blackwell to replenish most of that offensive production. Blackwell will join Caleb Foster, Cayden Boozer, Dame Sarr, and Patrick Ngongba who will be able to provide necessary tournament experience down the stretch. Seven-foot forward Cameron Williams also adds an exciting element of young talent for this Duke roster. There is still plenty of talent on this Duke team to not only win the ACC but the National Championship.
Florida Gators +650
The Florida Gators on the other hand are ranked atop the AP Poll, but they come in at number two on the list of championship favorites. Florida faced an early exit at the hands of the Iowa Hawkeyes in last year’s tournament, but they do return much of their core players. Thomas Haugh, Alex Condon, and Reuben Chinyelu return to give Florida the best frontcourt in all of college basketball, and maybe even in college basketball history. Not only are they efficient offensively, but they will also create a ton of second chance opportunities, and they should control the glass night in and night out. Boogie Fland is a huge X-Factor this season as the Gators hope he returns to his production he had while at Arkansas. He shot just 24% from beyond the arc last season which was a 10% decrease from the year before. The return of Denzel Aberdeen should open up more open looks so Fland can become a shooting threat once again.
UConn Huskies +1200
The Huskies head into the season as the fourth ranked team in the Preseason AP Poll. Hurley and company failed to finish business last season as they lost to the Michigan Wolverines in the national championship. Unfortunately, they also lost their best two players from last year’s team after the season ended. They do have the injury of Solo Ball to worry about as well, but the return of Silas Demary Jr. and Braylon Mullins is huge. The Huskies did add seven transfers ahead of the new campaign. Nik Khamenia (Duke) and Na’Jai Hines (Seton Hall) headline this incoming class of newbies. Hines size and physicality should get the offense going down low, and UConn also added Nils Machowski who is flying under the radar. UConn should win the Big East again, but they have to show they have enough star power and depth to return to the National Championship.
Illinois Fighting Illini +1400
Up next is the Illinois Fighting Illini who rank third in the AP Poll. At +1400 odds, there is a lot of value to like with a deep and experienced roster. They are coming off their first Final Four appearance in 20 years, and the Illini bring back a lot of their core. David Mirkovic is returning as a possible Wooden Award Candidate for the upcoming season. He will be flanked by Andrej Stojakovic who showed his elite potential in the tournament, and Tomislav and Zvonimir Ivisic give Illinois a frontcourt that can rival Florida’s. They should be one of the most difficult teams to defend with their incredible size and physicality up and down the roster. Stefan Vaaks is the key player to watch here. They need him to fill the hole left by Keaton Wagler. Vaaks has tremendous upside, but he needs to quickly become the focal point of the offense and settle in with Mirkovic and Stojakovic. Illinois will make another deep run in March.
Arizona Wildcats +1600
The Arizona Wildcats come in with the fifth best odds and are ranked fifth in the AP Poll. Tommy Lloyd’s crew entered the tournament looking like strong contenders to cut the nets down last season, but they were pummeled by the Wolverines. Arizona did lose some significant talent from last year’s team, but they will be right back in the mix as one of the best defensive and rebounding teams. They need their guards to step it up in order to reach their full potential this season. Motiejus Krivas and Ivan Kharchenkov will return and be a dynamic duo for Arizona. Both are strong rebounders and will be relied on for offensive efficiency. Caleb Holt will debut as a Wildcat this year and they will need him to be as good as advertised. He is the second ranked recruit in the nation and should be an immediate perimeter threat. Arizona will have to hold off the likes of Houston and Kansas in the Big 12, but they should secure the conference title and be a threat in March.
Dark Horse: Virginia Cavaliers +3000
At +3000, and just a team that brings a bit of parity to the mix, the Virginia Cavaliers are featured here as a dark horse threat. They do rank inside the Top 10 in the AP Poll, but they are flying under the radar. Ryan Odom has brought magic with him to the Cavaliers bench and he was able to keep Thijs De Ridder who may be the best player in the ACC. Sam Lewis and Chance Mallory give them some offensive depth, but the team got better by adding Jurian Dixon from UC Irvine and Jan Vide from Loyola Marymount. The remaining newcomers add size and important depth, which is key in making deep runs in March. This team could very easily upend Duke in the ACC and all of our brackets come tournament time.
