2026 Tennessee Volunteers Basketball Predictions and Odds to Win the National Championship

The Tennessee Volunteers have been another team that exhibits consistency year in and year out. They have made four straight Sweet 16’s and three straight Elite Eights, but the problem is they have yet to break through into the Final Four. The Volunteers have been transformed under Rick Barnes, but they have yet to reach the promised land. This offseason has been different for Barnes and the Volunteers program. Perhaps this difference is what they need to break through and compete for a national title, or it is one that ruins the consistency. Barnes brings in nine transfers and four freshmen to round out the roster. On paper, this is an incredibly talented team with one of the best coaches in college basketball history, but they have to come together, be consistent in conference play, and not fizzle out in March.

Tennessee Volunteers Summary of Last Season
Last season was a big one for the Tennessee Volunteers, losing to the eventual National Champions in the Elite Eight. They opened the season up winning seven games in a row, including a big nonconference win over #3 Houston, before dropping three in a row and falling to 7-3. The Volunteers managed to get through the remainder of the nonconference schedule unscathed and finished with a 10-3 record. Tennessee had to endure the tough SEC conference gauntlet that awaited them. They began conference play going 2-3, before opening things up and getting to 6-3. By the end of the regular season, Tennessee had finished with a 21-10 record and an 11-7 conference record. However, their conference tournament time was shortened by an upset win over Vanderbilt in the quarterfinals. Tennessee didn’t let that early exit stump them as they earned a No. 6 Seed in March Madness. They proceeded to dominate their way to Elite Eight, knocking out No. 11 Seed Miami (OH), No. 3 Seed Virginia, and No. 2 Seed Iowa State, before losing to Michigan.
The Volunteers finished the season with very average offensive numbers. They ranked 13th in the SEC in scoring (78.8 PPG), and they shot 46.1% as a team. Thanks to a stout defense they finished fourth in the conference with a +9.2-PPG differential, and second in the conference with a +5.1- FG% differential. They were also one of the best rebounding teams in the country. Their +12.5-RPG differential ranked second nationally. Defensively, the Volunteers led the SEC in PPG allowed, giving up just 69.6 PPG. They suffocated the opposition, holding teams to just a 40.9% shooting percentage. Ja’Kobi Gillespie led the way for Tennessee in PPG (18.4), FT% (81.4), APG, (5.4), and SPG (2.1). Nate Ament finished with 16.7 PPG while tying for the team lead with 6.3 RPG. J.P. Estrella was the only other Volunteers player to average double-digit PPG (10 PPG).
Tennessee Volunteers Key Additions/Losses
Tennessee benefitted from an extremely deep roster a year ago. They had 11 players on average of 10 or more MPG. However, they also lost a lot of those depth pieces when the season ended. Gillespie was drafted in the second round of the NBA Draft by the San Antonio Spurs. Ament was drafted 13th overall by the Milwaukee Bucks, Estrella transferred to Michigan, and Felix Okpara was drafted in the second round by the Washington Wizards. Jaylen Carey transferred to Missouri, Bishop Boswell transferred to Maryland, Amari Evans transferred to Texas, Cade Phillips transferred to Texas A&M, and Amaree Abram transferred to Drexel.
With all the departures, Barnes had to get busy in the transfer portal. They signed a class of four incoming freshmen. It was made up of three four-stars and one three-star. Barnes brought in nine transfer players to join his squad. This incoming transfer class is headlined by Juke Harris who is coming in from Wake Forest where he averaged 21.4 PPG and 6.5 RPG. Dai Dai Adams is now making his fourth stop in his college basketball career, coming over from California where he averaged 16.9 PPG. Terrence Hill Jr. is transferring in from VCU after averaging 15 PPG. The Volunteers also brought in Tyler Lundblade (15.6 PPG) from Belmont, Jalen Haralson (16.2 PPG) from Notre Dame, Miles Rubin (11.3 PPG) from Loyola-Chicago, Brandon Lue (10.9 PPG) from Kennesaw State, Jalen Washington (8.9 PPG) from Vanderbilt, and Christian Fermin who is coming over after four years at VCU.

2026 Tennessee Volunteers X-Factors/Big Questions
Can the new starting five win together?
This team is brand new. Harris is going to be the focal point of the offense, but they are going to have to learn how to play together. Similarly to Texas, this Volunteers roster is going to have to endure growing pains, but they need to outgrow them and gel together before conference play or that could really limit their season success. They will get a chance to measure themselves against another top opponent on November 17th when they take on #6 Michigan State. However, the remainder of their nonconference isn’t difficult, and this team will have time to settle in, and the players should pick up on their roles by the time conference play rolls around. Barnes has to ensure there is no selfish basketball, and these guys can learn they are no longer the only option offensively.
2026 Tennessee Volunteers Notable Odds:
National Championship: +2600
SEC Champion: +930
AP Top 25: 8th
Andy Katz’s Power 44: 7th
Wooden Winner- Juke Harris: +4500
2026 Tennessee Volunteers Predictions:
The Volunteers have major Final Four aspirations after coming up just short last season. Barnes replaced his depth and may have even improved his roster overall. Harris, Hill, and Adams are going to be an electric trio for Barnes, while many of his remaining transfer players will add valuable depth. It will be tough, especially on defense, for this team to grow together with all the newness, but Barnes has done this before, and he is one of the best coaches in the country. They may not be the best team in the SEC, but this roster full of experience is capable of making a deep run in March Madness.
