When you Google consistency, Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars should theoretically pop up. The Cougars have recorded five consecutive 30-win seasons, made seven straight Sweet 16 appearances, and have tallied two Final Four appearances under Sampson. While their 2025 season ended in upset-fashion, as Illinois eliminated the Cougars in the Sweet 16, they are just a year removed from being the national runners-up and are still a highly motivated bunch looking to bring a title back to Houston. The Cougars are set to replace four starters from last year’s team, but Sampson has reloaded in the transfer portal. While consistency has never been questioned under Sampson, one has to wonder how long Sampson and the Cougars program can continuously rebuild in the NIL era.

Houston Cougars Basketball Summary of Last Season

The Houston Cougars failed to make it past the Sweet 16 after an incredibly strong regular season. Houston started the season winning 17 of their first 18 games. Their only loss between November 3rd and January 23rd was a three-point loss to #17 ranked Tennessee. The Cougars did show signs of weakness in the Big 12 play. They went just 2-4 against Big 12 ranked opponents. They beat #16 BYU and #14 Texas Tech, but lost to #6 Iowa State, #4 Arizona, #14 Kansas, and Texas Tech in the rematch when the Red Raiders were ranked #12. However, the Cougars finished the regular season with a 26-5 record and a 14-4 Big 12 record. Houston made it all the way to the conference tournament finals before losing to #2 Arizona for the second time. They still managed to snag a No. 2 Seed ahead of March Madness. They dominated their first two opponents (Idaho and Texas A&M) beating them by an average margin of 32 points. Unfortunately, the momentum stopped there, and they fell to No. 3 Seed Illinois in the Sweet 16.

The Cougars once again showcased an elite defense under Sampson. They only averaged 76.9 PPG on offense which ranked 11th in the Big 12. They shot over 44% as a team and nearly 35% from deep. However, thanks to their elite defense they featured a +14.5-PPG differential which ranked ninth in the country. The defense ranked second in PPG allowed (62.3) behind just Northern Iowa. The Cougars held opponents to just 39.6% shooting from the floor and 31.6% from deep. Kingston Fleming led the team with 16.1 PPG. He also added 4.1 RPG and 5.2 APG. Emanuel Sharp finished second on the team with 15.5 PPG, and Milos Uzan was the third and final Houston player to average double-digit PPG (11.1).

2026 Houston Cougars Basketball Key Additions/Losses

Flemings was drafted eighth overall in the NBA Draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Chris Cenac Jr. was drafted 19 picks later by the Boston Celtics. Sharp was drafted in the second round by the Sacramento Kings, and Uzan also turned to professional basketball. Isiah Harwell transferred to Gonzaga while Kalifa Sakho and Ramon Walker Jr. both ran out of eligibility.

After losing their top four scorers and several depth pieces, the Cougars had no choice but to replenish the roster. The Cougars signed three incoming freshmen. They signed four-stars C Arafan Diane and G Ikenna Alozie, as well as three-star G Tyus Thomas. They also brought in five transfers. Chendall Weaver transfers in from Texas after averaging 5.8 PPG last season. Braden East is coming over from Lamar where he averaged 12.8 PPG and shot 53.3% from the floor last season. Corey Hadnot averaged 20.4 PPG last season with Purdue Fort Wayne before coming to the Cougars over the offseason. Dedan Thomas Jr. transfers in from LSU after averaging 15.3 PPG, and Delrecco Gillespie rounds out the transfer class as he joins Houston after four years with Kent State. Gillespie averaged 17.7 PPG and averaged over 11 RPG last season.

Will the defense be elite?

Houston ranked fourth nationally in adjusted defensive efficiency last season, and that has long been a characteristic of Sampson’s Cougars. Tugler is a former Defensive Player of the Year, and the team got bigger. Sampson knows how to recruit to his liking so it is hard to imagine the Cougars taking too far of a step down defensively with all the departing starters from a year ago.

The Cougars are going to be in the conversation no matter which way you put it. They reloaded after losing a lot of talent to the NBA. Thomas needs to step up and be the focal point of the offense, and the rest of the team needs to fill the gaps on defense. Gillespie is also another interesting offensive piece as he opens things up with his ability to score inside. They need to gel together, but this team is worth some couch change. Winning the conference is not an unreasonable prediction, and at +350, there is a lot of value to like on taking that flier now.
