The Tigers are fresh off a wildly disappointing season where they posted a 7-6 record and failed to do anything significant. However, the belief in the program remains after a strong move that shook the college football landscape. LSU hired Lane Kiffin away from Ole Miss right before the Rebels’ playoff run, adding more hatred to the rivalry. Kiffin not only abandoned his team but proceeded to bring a good portion of his coaching staff and eventually some of his players. Kiffin and company will happily be playing the villain role this season, and they have assembled a strong roster to do so. LSU is loaded with new talent in the program, but the big question remains how well this team of stars will gel and get this squad back in the playoff picture.

LSU Tigers Summary of Last Season

LSU struggled mightily last season. They managed to begin the season 4-0 after knocking off Clemson, Louisiana Tech, Florida, and Southeastern Louisiana. Unfortunately, their fortunes changed after that streak. They would go on to lose four of their next five games; that happened to be against ranked teams. Their lone win in that five-game stretch came against South Carolina. They lost to Ole Miss on the road, and then lost three straight against Vanderbilt, Texas A&M, and Alabama. As if that weren’t bad enough, they barely beat Arkansas and Western Kentucky at home, winning by a combined four points. The Tigers would then lose their regular season finale to Oklahoma to finalize a 7-5 regular season record. LSU lost to Houston in the Kinder’s Texas Bowl to conclude their abysmal season.

The Tigers offense ranked last in the conference, as they averaged just 333.5 YPG. They also managed just 22.8 PPG. Garrett Nussmeier led the team with 1,927 passing yards and he finished with 12 passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and five interceptions. Michael Van Buren Jr. passed for 1,010 yards and he recorded eight passing touchdowns, one rushing touchdown, and two interceptions. Cade Durham led the Tigers ground game with 505 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns. Harlem Berry recorded 491 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns as Durham’s backup. Barion Brown led the Tigers in receiving yards with 532, and he recorded one touchdown. Trey’Dez Green led the Tigers with seven receiving touchdowns, and he also finished third on the team with 433 receiving yards. Zavion Thomas finished behind Brown with 488 receiving yards while also recording four receiving touchdowns.

The defense held up a little better for the Tigers last season. They held opponents to just 328.7 YPG and kept them to under 20 PPG. A.J. Haulcy led the team with 89 tackles while also adding four pass deflections, three interceptions, and one forced fumble. Davhon Keys was right behind Haulcy with 88 tackles, and he recorded two pass deflections and one forced fumble. Harold Perkins Jr. led the team with four sacks, and he also forced a fumble, recorded three pass deflections, and three interceptions. DJ Pickett tied Perkins and Haulcy for the team lead with three interceptions. Mansoor Delane was a ballhawk and led the team with 11 pass deflections, and he also snagged two interceptions.

LSU Tigers Key Additions/Losses

LSU ranks 30th in the country in returning production. While that is somewhat favorable, they lost a lot of talent. Delane was drafted in the first round by the Kansas City Chiefs. Haulcy and Thomas were then drafted in the third round. Tight end Bauer Sharp, Brown, and Perkins Jr. were drafted in the sixth round, and Nussmeier was drafted in the seventh round. Offensive tackle Carius Curne transferred to Ole Miss, offensive tackle Tyree Adams transferred to Texas A&M, defensive lineman Walter Mathis Jr. transferred to Auburn, and wide receiver Nic Anderson transferred to Kentucky.

LSU did put together the best transfer portal class, by far, in the country, and that is why they will find themselves ranked heading into the season. Not only did they add Kiffin, but he and his coaching staff got it done in the portal. They added Sam Leavitt (Arizona State) to take over at quarterback, as well as offensive lineman Jordan Seaton (Colorado), wide receiver Eugene Wilson III (Florida), wide receiver Jayce Brown (Kansas State), quarterback Husan Longstreet (USC), offensive lineman Aliou Bah (Maryland), wide receiver Jackson Harris (Hawai’i), offensive lineman Devin Harper (Ole Miss), wide receiver Tre’ Brown III (Old Dominion), and wide receiver Winston Watkins Jr. (Ole Miss) to boost the offense. If that wasn’t enough, they also added edge rusher Princewill Umanmielen (Ole Miss), safety Ty Benefield (Boise State), edge rusher Jordan Ross (Tennessee), defensive lineman Stephiylan Green (Clemson), defensive lineman Malik Blocton (Auburn), and linebacker TJ Dottery (Ole Miss).

2026 LSU Tigers Schedule Breakdown

The Tigers schedule is far from easy. Playing in the SEC with that extra conference game is going to be a brutal adjustment for the teams, especially those vying for a playoff spot. They start the season with a slight test against Clemson and have a tune up game against Louisiana Tech before one of the biggest games of the year. In Week Three Kiffin will lead his villain-labeled squad back to his old stomping grounds in Oxford. After that emotional contest, they have to turn around and play host to Texas A&M who is looking to return to the playoffs this season. Their remaining road schedule is not terrible as they have trips to Kentucky, Auburn, Tennessee, and Arkansas. However, their home schedule is tough. Not only do they host Clemson and Texas A&M early, but they also have to play host to Mississippi State, Texas, and Alabama. While the Tigers do get the benefit of playing at home, these teams are going to be tough.

2026 LSU Tigers X-Factors/Big Questions

Can the transfer class win now?

Kiffin and his coaching staff did an excellent job at attracting top talent in the portal. However, it remains to be seen whether or not all these stars will be able to come together as one solid unit. There are multiple players coming in that were the guy at their previous program and not all of them will be the guys at LSU. The coaching staff will need to do a good job managing egos and expectations to ensure that they play close to the very high ceiling they have given themselves.

Lane Kiffin

Kiffin is walking into this season in a way consistent with Darth Vader. He is playing the treacherous villain in the eyes of many across the country. Kiffin is one of the best coaches, and he is going to flourish with more resources at LSU. He just has to have the time to prove he is the man for the job and get LSU back to powerhouse status.

I love the Kiffin experiment. Internally, the guys at LSU did their jobs incredibly well in order to bring him in as the new leader of this program. However, I do think they are still a year away from being a relative playoff force. While I very well could be wrong and this has the potential to win the National Championship, I do know there will naturally be a lot of distractions around this program with their villain arc. There are a lot of talented pieces in place for LSU to hit the over on this 8.5 win total. They have 10 wins written all over them. However, who they lose to is incredibly important for making the SEC championship game. Stay away from playing LSU to win the conference but buy the over and expect them to be in the playoff conversation, just not as legit championship contenders.
