After years of failing expectations, Miami finally took a big step forward last season, reaching the National Championship game. They weren’t able to get it done in the end, but they seemed to take a big step forward as a program. Now the focus isn’t getting back to playoff relevancy, it is staying consistent in this new era of college football. Miami lost a lot of talent from last year’s roster, but they also put together one of best portal classes in the country. Darian Mensah has been tasked with teaming up with Malachi Toney and taking Miami back to the championship, this time to win it. Another important storyline to follow is whether or not the defense can return to elite status after losing their best pass rushers from a year ago. Mario Cristobal has his work cut out for him and his team, but the Hurricanes are favorites to win the conference, and doing so would result in playoff spot.

Miami Hurricanes Summary of Last Season

The Miami Hurricanes ended their season in the National Championship game, as their second half comeback was not enough to take down the Indiana Hoosiers. Overall, Miami had a weirdly successful season. Not weird in the sense that they didn’t deserve it, but they limped through the season. They started off strong, going 5-0 and picking up wins against ranked opponents in Notre Dame, South Florida, and Florida State. However, they lost at home Louisville off a Bye Week and then lost two weeks later to SMU. In the playoffs, Miami limped to the championship. After finishing the regular season 10-2, but missing out on the ACC Championship game, the Hurricanes needed a late touchdown to take down Texas A&M, took advantage of two uncharacteristic turnovers from Ohio State to beat them by 10, and then needed a touchdown with 18 seconds left to comeback and beat Ole Miss the semifinals. Unfortunately, their efforts were ultimately not enough as they lost to Indiana.

The Miami offense ranked sixth in the ACC as they averaged 405 YPG and 30.9 PPG. Carson Beck completed 72.4% of his passes and he finished the season with 3,813 passing yards. He also recorded 30 passing touchdowns, two rushing touchdowns, though he did throw 12 interceptions. Mark Fletcher gave the Hurricanes a solid option out of the backfield. He averaged 5.5 YPC as he finished with 1,192 rushing yards on 216 carries. He also recorded 12 rushing touchdowns. CharMar Brown notched 122 carries and recorded 474 yards and seven rushing touchdowns. Toney was Beck’s favorite target by far as he had 109 receptions on the season. He finished with 1,211 receiving yards and 10 touchdowns. Keelan Marion finished second on the team with 746 receiving yards and he recorded two touchdowns. CJ Daniels finished second on the team with seven receiving touchdowns and he recorded 557 receiving yards.

The defense was the strength of the Miami team. They held opponents to just 294.1 YPG, while also allowing just 89.3 rushing YPG. Their 14.8 PPG allowed ranked fifth in the country. Mohamed Toure led the team with 84 tackles while also recording two sacks and six pass deflections. Jakobe Thomas recorded 75 tackles, 3.5 sacks, six pass deflections, and he led the team with five interceptions. Akheem Mesidor recorded a team best 12.5 sacks, while also forcing four fumbles. Reuben Bain Jr. recorded 9.5 sacks, while forcing a fumble and recording an interception.

Miami Hurricanes Key Additions/Losses

The Hurricanes bring back just 49% of the production from a year ago, which ranks 78th in the country. They watched three of their best players from last year’s team get drafted in the first round. Francis Mauigoa, Bain Jr., and Mesidor all heard their names called by the 22nd pick in the first round of the NFL Draft. They were followed by Beck (third round), offensive tackle Markel Bell (third round), Thomas (third round), cornerback Keionte Scott (fourth round), offensive lineman Anez Cooper (sixth round), and Daniels (sixth round).

Miami’s coaching staff responded to the low returning production, and they put together a Top Five transfer portal class in the country. They brought in edge rusher Damon Wilson II (Missouri), defensive lineman Keona Davis (Nebraska), safety Omar Thornton (Boston College), and defensive lineman Jarquez Carter (Ohio State) to help rebuild the defense. They also brought in Mensah (Duke), wide receiver Cooper Barkate (Duke), wide receiver Vandrevius Jacobs (South Carolina), and wide receiver Cam Vaughn (West Virginia) to retool the offense.

2026 Miami Hurricanes Schedule Breakdown

As far as schedules go in the ACC, Miami does have one of the tougher lineups for the 2026 season. The Hurricanes should have no issues cruising to a 4-0 start as they open with Stanford, Florida A&M, Wake Forest, and Central Michigan. Their first big test will be that fifth game as they hit the road to take on Clemson. After a bye week, they play host to Florida State and Pittsburgh in back-to-back weeks. After the two game homestand, they travel to UNC and Notre Dame, with the Irish looking to avenge last seasons loss to Miami. Finally, the Hurricanes will end the regular season with three straight home games against Duke, Virginia Tech, and Boston College. Clemson and Notre Dame on the road will be huge games, luckily for the Hurricanes the road game to Notre Dame won’t hurt their chances at a conference championship appearance.

Can Darian Mensah fill the shoes left by Cam Ward and Carson Beck?

In back-to-back seasons Miami has put together strong seasons with one-time transfer quarterbacks. Cam Ward led Miami to a 10-win regular season, while Beck led Miami to the championship game a season ago. Now they will task Mensah with not only adding another strong regular season, but to elevate the program even further by winning the National Championship. He will have a strong receiver core around him, but he also may be the better college quarterback than his two predecessors. Mensah has big-play ability and his familiarity with ACC defenses results in a smaller learning curve than most transfers. There is a lot of excitement surrounding the quarterback position in Miami.

Does Miami find their way to the ACC Championship this year?

Mensah is coming off a season in which his, then, Duke Blue Devils took down the Virginia Cavaliers in the ACC Championship game. Miami missed out, but this year they are looking to secure a spot. They are currently heavy favorites to win the ACC Championship at -145, and thanks to the rest of the conference landscape, it isn’t hard to see them winning it. As we saw a year ago, it isn’t vitally important in order to secure a playoff spot, but winning the ACC this season may result in more favorable seeding and better momentum in the playoffs this season.

Regarding the Miami win total, they will need to post an 11-1 season in order to hit the over on their win total. At first glance, they have 10 games they should win on their schedule. The road trips to Clemson and Notre Dame are going to be tough. Both teams will have this game circled on their calendar and they will be ready to give Miami all they got. However, Clemson is likely to be down this year, and Miami only needs to go 1-1 in the toss up games in order to hit the over, making it an easy choice. Take the over on the Hurricanes win total, take Miami to win the conference at -145, and a flier on Mensah to win the Heisman at +1100. It will be another exciting year for Miami.
