Previous Game Recap
On Friday night, the Houston Rockets beat the San Antonio Spurs 114-110. Houston leaned on early defense to jump out to a lead, with Marcus Smart and Amen Thompson hounding the Spurs on the defensive end. Alperen Sengun did a good job of limiting Victor Wembanyama’s influence, holding him to 25 points on 9-21 from the field. On offense, Sengun scored a game-high 29 points to go along with seven rebounds and seven assists, as the Turkish center was the difference against one of the NBA title contenders. The return of Fred VanVleet has also unlocked this offense, as Houston’s ball movement was exceptional, highlighted by their buzzer-beater at halftime to take a 61-59 lead into the break. Thompson made the game-sealing block on Wembanyama late in the fourth with the Rockets holding a two-point lead, allowing Houston to secure the upset victory.
From a betting perspective, we went a perfect 4-0 to improve our season record to 7-0. We took a swing on the Rockets moneyline at +175 odds, which cashed in their thrilling victory. Our biggest player prop of the night was Sengun to secure over 4.5 assists, with a ladder to 7+ at plus money, both of which hit as he finished with exactly seven dimes. Finally, we took the low-hanging -170 odds on Stephon Castle to record a steal, which he did early in the third quarter.
The Rockets improved to 3-0 with their 121-114 road victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Saturday night on the second night of a back-to-back. Kevin Durant led the way with 22 points, but it was a real team effort with seven Rockets finishing in double digits. Amen Thompson posted his third straight double double, as VanVleet’s return has given him more freedom to crash the glass on both ends of the floor. The Houston defense held the Hawks to just 26.5% from behind the arc, giving the Rockets another textbook victory to improve to 3-0 on the year.
Hawks vs Rockets Breakdown
Tonight, the Houston Rockets (3-0) host the Atlanta Hawks (2-1) as they look to keep their perfect season alive with a rematch of their Saturday night affair. Houston leaned on a strong first half to build a 20-point lead in that one, but allowed the Hawks to get within five late in the fourth before Durant iced the game from the free throw line. In tonight’s matchup, Houston is expected to have the advantage again with this one being at home, but cannot afford to allow the Hawks to crawl back into the game. Atlanta is a legitimate threat in the East after a strong year last season and an even better offseason, and it is always hard to beat the same team twice in a row in the NBA. The Hawks will come out flying after suffering their first defeat of the season against Houston two days ago, which means the Rockets defense must be alert from the opening tip.
One fascinating matchup to look at is VanVleet against Dyson Daniels on the outside. VanVleet has been the true point guard the Rockets have been craving, but missed Saturday’s matchup due to injury. His addition to the lineup will give the Hawks something new to digest, as he will bring the ball up the court more often than not. Daniels is one of the best on-ball defenders in the league, and it will be interesting to see if he switches onto VanVleet instead of staying with the less dangerous Thompson on the outside. CJ McCollum is an admirable defender, but Daniels is a better matchup for Atlanta to shut down the Rockets point of attack.
On the inside, the Rockets will be without Steven Adams as the backup center, which means Jabari Smith Jr. will likely shift into that position when Sengun needs a rest. The Hawks have really struggled to contain power forwards on the glass, and Smith Jr. looks poised for a big game. Third-string center Clint Capela will get some time on the court, but his lack of switchability on the defensive end really limits what the Rockets can do on that side of the court. Capela is excellent on the glass, Houston’s strong point, but he doesn’t offer too much more for this team. We have seen the Rockets opt to give Smith Jr. more minutes rather than going deeper into the bench when they are short at center in the past, and it would be odd to see them alter that game plan in this one. Capela got 11 minutes and was ineffective during his return to Atlanta, and I expect him to see that number drop into the single digits tonight.
Both of these teams move the ball extremely well on offense, so this matchup will likely come down to who wants it more on the defensive end. Whichever team can interrupt passing lanes and stay with their assignments will prevail tonight, and there is no doubt Houston has the advantage in that department. As long as their motivation to stay perfect is still high, Houston will look like the better team on both ends of the court.
Hawks vs Rockets Best Bets
For the first bet of the night, we will keep it simple with a pick on the Rockets moneyline at -200 odds. The -4.5 point spread at -115 is also tempting, but I am concerned that Houston lacks the focus to maintain a big lead once they go up. They let the Spurs come back to make it close, they let the Hawks come all the way back, and this could be one that goes down to the wire. However, the Rockets being at home combined with their advantage on the outside will allow them to improve to 4-0 on the season with a second straight win over Atlanta.
For the first player prop, we will take Jabari Smith Jr. to go over 19.5 combined rebounds and points at -110 odds. Smith Jr. has recorded exactly five rebounds in each of his three appearances this year, but this will be the matchup where he gets over this line. The Hawks gave up the most rebounds in the league to power forwards last year, and with VanVleet back in the lineup, Smith Jr. will be able to get active on the glass. For the points, he has scored 30, 9, and 14 points this year, and this line implies he probably needs 14 or 15 points to cash the over. Smith Jr. has been the second-most efficient scorer on the Rockets this year, and with the Hawks also struggling to keep mobile power forwards off the scoresheet, this looks like the dream matchup for this 19.5 line.
